Itinerary

  • Day 1: Overnight Flight

    Head to the airport and board your overnight flight to Accra.

    This tour requires a visa for U.S. citizens. Check entry requirements or call us with questions at 800-766-2645.

  • Day 2: Arrive in Accra

    You might be tired, but you’re also in Ghana. So, life is pretty good, huh?

    Today's highlights:

    • Meet an EF representative and fellow travelers as they arrive at the airport.
    • Transfer to your hotel to check in and check out your room.
    • Enjoy an included dinner at the hotel—at the buffet or in your room, depending on your arrival time.
  • Day 3: Explore Accra + Welcome Lunch + Sightseeing Tour of James Town

    You’re about to get up close and personal with Ghana’s capital city, Accra, where street food and shops flourish. You’ll tour James Town, one of the city’s oldest districts, with stops at a local boxing gym, Fort James, and a nonprofit.

    Enjoy an included Welcome Lunch with your fellow travelers at an authentic local spot.

    Today's highlights:

    • Walk around the bustling city of Accra and learn about Ghana’s road to independence.
    • Visit the W.E.B. Dubois Centre, a museum dedicated to the life and work of the man known as the “Father of Pan-Africanism.”
    • Meet locals and learn about Street Children Empowerment Foundation, a nonprofit that helps improve the lives of street-connected children.
    • Have dinner with your group at the hotel or local restaurant.
  • Day 4: Free day in Accra

    Yesterday was action-packed. Keep the energy high, or take it down a notch, as you explore all that Accra has to offer.

    Makola Market: If you’re looking to truly live like a local, head to this buzzing street market where friendly merchants sell everything from food to furniture.

    Ano Institute of Arts and Knowledge: Take a closer look at African heritage through the lens of Ghanaian historian and filmmaker, Nana Oforiatta-Ayim.

  • Day 5: Travel to Kumasi via Trashy Bags & Yaa Asentewaa Shrine

    First up, a lesson in sustainability and how one Ghanaian organization is changing the game. Then, marvel at the Yaa Asentewa Shrine, one of the last surviving examples of Ashanti Empire architecture.

    Today's highlights:

    • Tour the Trashy Bags factory to learn how single-use plastic is being recycled and turned into handbags, gifts, and more.
    • Visit the Yaa Asantewaa Museum, built to resemble a traditional Ashanti residence.
    • Stop for an included lunch en route to Kumasi, and end your day with dinner at the hotel.
  • Day 6: Cacao Farm, Manhyia Palace, and Cloth-Making Demonstrations

    Today is all about the Ashanti Empire’s history, traditions, and people who have lived in this part of Ghana for over 350 years. After a visit to a cacao farm, you’ll witness the intricate handweaving of two important textiles before touring Manhyia Palace.

    Today's highlights:

    • Visit Manhyia Palace, a museum dedicated to Ashanti history and their resistance to British colonialism.
    • Participate in cloth making workshops in two villages—kente cloth in Adanwomase and adinkra cloth in Ntonso.
  • Day 7: Travel to Cape Coast via Assin Manso Slave Camp

    For nearly 150 years, Ghana was the center of the British slave trade. Today you’ll get a sobering history lesson and see how African slaves were treated.

    Today's highlights:

    • Visit Assin Manso River Park, where slaves were kept before being transported to Cape Coast and eventually, the Americas.
    • Eat an included picnic lunch before heading to your next destination, Cape Coast.
    • Relax at your Cape Coast hotel and enjoy dinner with your fellow travelers.
  • Day 8: Explore Kakum National Park and Cape Coast Castle

    A former European colonial capital, Cape Coast is chock-full of cultural significance. Today, you'll learn all about it—after your morning session with Mother Nature.

    Today's highlights:

    • Escape to nature with a walk on Kalum National Park’s elevated bridges, 130 feet above the ground.
    • Have lunch at a local Cape Coast restaurant.
    • Join a guide for a tour of Cape Coast Castle, where thousands of enslaved Africans were held captive before being sent to the Americas.
    • Ride the bus back to your hotel for dinner and snoozing.
  • Day 9: Free Day in Cape Coast

    As you saw yesterday, there’s no shying away from this region’s notorious past. But these days, Cape Coast is an easygoing town, full of easygoing Ghanaians. Won’t you join them?

    Today's highlights:

    Ghanaian eats: Get out there and continue to delight your taste buds with local seafood and other favorites like fufu, a popular side dish often served with stews.

    The waterfront: ICYMI, Cape Coast is on the ocean. Head to the water to breathe in that fresh sea air, watch fisherman do their thing, and watch birds…also do their thing.

  • Day 10: Travel to Accra + Fly Home

    You’re going back to where it all began for one final day with your fellow travelers in the lively city of Accra.

    Today's highlights:

    • Reflect and reminisce with your group during a Farewell Lunch in Accra.
    • Visit Global Mamas, an organization that empowers Ghanaian women to sell their handmade products and gain economic independence.
    • Head to the airport for your overnight flight home.
  • Day 11: Arrive Home

    Goodbye, friends!

    Your next destination awaits—home. But this isn’t goodbye. It’s “See you later.” The only question is, where?
