Itinerary

Day 1: Overnight flight
Settle in for your flight and get some sleep. Lisbon’s many hills are charming and historic with incredible views, but they’re also no joke (search “Lisbon hills” on TikTok to see what we mean) so you’re gonna need to rest up.
Day 2: Arrive in Lisbon + Welcome Dinner
Welcome to Lisbon, the City of Seven Hills. Rising up from the banks of the Tagus River, Portugal’s colorful capital blends old-world charm with chill coastal energy. It’s one of Europe’s sunniest cities (about 300 days a year), home to winding streets paved in stone, tile-covered buildings, iconic yellow trams, and enough pastries to fuel your whole trip.
In the evening, enjoy your Welcome Dinner! Hosted by your Tour Director, this kickoff dinner is all about getting to know the others in your group and easing into the rest of the trip ahead.
- Arrive at the airport to meet your Tour Director and fellow travelers as they arrive.
- Transfer to your hotel to check into your accommodations.
- Head out into the night for a Welcome Dinner with your group at an authentic local spot.
Day 3: Guided sightseeing in Lisbon
Rome usually gets all the glory when it comes to ancient history, but Portugal’s capital is actually even older than the Eternal City. Lisbon started as a humble fishing village before it exploded into a global maritime superpower in the 1500s, and its salty history is still very rooted in the present. Today you’ll go beyond the typical touristy spots and explore some of Lisbon’s oldest neighborhoods and landmarks with a local guide.
- Wander Alfama, Lisbon’s oldest neighborhood, shaped by the Romans and Moors way before it became a hub for fishermen and traders. Its narrow streets, colorful tiles, and hidden squares reflect centuries of history, but you can also find trendy restaurants, artisan shops, and cafes (Alfama Doce on Rua da Regueira has really good coffee).
- Stroll the courtyards and ramparts of Castelo de São Jorge, a fortress that’s guarded Lisbon since the 11th century. Spot colorful peacocks roaming freely around the grounds and take in sweeping views of red rooftops and the Tagus River.
- Try a pastel de nata! These flaky, custardy pastries are something of a national icon in Portugal, and they’re so, so, so good with coffee. The most iconic places to try them are Pastéis de Belém and Manteigaria, but most bakeries also have them.
Praça do Comércio: This huge square, framed by sunny yellow buildings, was once the city’s royal center, now buzzing with restaurants and boasting views of the Tagus River.
LX Factory: Explore street art, quirky shops, cafés, and restaurants in a lively, artsy atmosphere set in a former industrial complex.
Bifanas: Stop at Bifanas do Afonso or O Trevo (visited by Anthony Bourdain) for a bifana, a soft roll piled with juicy, marinated pork. Make sure to add piri piri hot sauce!
Day 4: Free day or optional Sintra & Portuguese Riviera excursion
It's your free day in Portugal to cross any items off your bucket list. Hunt for souvenirs, squeeze in another tour, church, tram ride, or pastel de nata, or get to know another unique neighborhood. If you want to head outside the city, an optional excursion to the mountains and the coast is calling.
Elevador de Santa Justa: Originally steam-powered, this outdoor elevator is the handiwork of Gustave Eiffel’s apprentice (so it might look a little familiar). A ride up gives you awesome views of the city skyline (but you can also use the stairs if there’s a line).
Bairro Alto nightlife: Nightlife in Bairro Alto centers around small, intimate bars, where the crowds spill into the streets. It’s super lively and a great area to spend an evening.
National Tile Museum: A quick bus will take you to this must-see museum that showcases Portugal’s iconic azulejo tiles, from 15th-century masterpieces to modern designs.
Tinned fish: Portugal is the canning capital of the world, and tined fish is a fun souvenir to bring home. Sol e Pesca, Miss Can, and Conserveira de Lisboa are great spots.
Day 5: Travel to Madrid
Say Tchau! to Portugal and ¡Hola! to neighboring Spain—you're headed to Madrid! Rich in Spanish tradition, Madrid mixes old with new like sangria mixes wine with fruit salad. And it works just as well.
- Hop on your flight from Lisbon to Madrid.
- Arrive in Madrid and check out your accommodation.
- Take a brief orientation walk with your Tour Director to familiarize yourself with the area.
Neighborhood hopping: Chueca and Malasaña neighborhoods have vintage fashion, inexpensive tapas bars, and street art from the famous Banksy.
Culture curious: The Golden Triangle features The Prado, Thyssen-Bornemisza, and The Reina Sofia museums.
Day 6: Guided sightseeing in Madrid + optional street art tour & picnic
A nearly endless amount of tapas, sangria, and Spanish Golden Age architecture will greet you in this city located at the very center of Spain. Discover many of the most popular destinations before getting cultured at one of the world’s leading art museums. And remember, there’s always room for more tapas.
- Meet your local guide and journey to the very heart of Madrid at the Puerta del Sol, aka the “Gate of the Sun.”
- Shop, walk, and enjoy the outdoors and a bronze statue of King Phillip III at Plaza Mayor (Main Square).
- Check out the Picassos and Dalís at the Reina Sofia, or see the works of the old Rennaissance masters at the Prado.
El Retiro Park: Once belonging to the Spanish Monarchy, this now public park contains a variety of statues and museums, the famed Rosaleda rose garden, the Palacio de Cristal, and Retiro Pond—a great spot for watching people and street performers alike.
Malasaña: This area is known for a large student population and streets filled with coffee shops, bakeries, and vintage clothing stores by day, and vibrant nightlife after dark.
Day 7: Free day + optional medieval Toledo excursion
Enjoy a free day to explore Spain's capital city on your own or join the Optional Medieval Toledo Tour!
Tapas: Head to Plaza de Santa Ana in the evening for tapas. This square is slightly off the beaten path, and a hotspot for locals beginning their nights.
Real Madrid: Tour Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, home to Madrid’s futból team, Real Madrid. Sit in the players’ seats, see trophies up close, and feel the luxury of the presidential box.
Day 8: Travel to Barcelona + optional tapas tour
Welcome to Barcelona, where stunning Gaudí architecture, sunny beaches, and legendary nightlife collide. Wander the winding streets of the Gothic Quarter, grab tapas in hidden squares, and hit the clubs that keep the city dancing until sunrise. From the iconic Sagrada Família to the colorful Park Güell, every corner of Barcelona has a story—and probably a party.
- Travel by train from Madrid to Barcelona, capital of Catalonia, an autonomous seaside region of Spain.
- Take an introductory walk around Barcelona with your Tour Director.
- Stroll Las Ramblas, the main pedestrian thoroughfare lined with bars, cafes, shops and street performers.
- Stop in Plaça de Catalunya, the city center where old meets new.
- Enjoy the rest of the evening to explore on your own.
Day 9: Guided tour of Barcelona + optional sunset cruise
Experience Barcelona’s unique architecture and atmosphere with a local guide as you wander the city’s enchanting streets. This historic city is home to nine UNESCO World Heritage Sites, seven of which were built by Gaudí (he’s kind of a big deal around here). Take in the impressive sites, and understand why Barcelona is the only city to receive a Royal Gold Medal for architecture—the buildings are basically art.
- Step into Barcelona’s historic heart, the Gothic Quarter, where narrow cobblestone streets twist past medieval buildings, quaint squares, and cozy cafes. Once the center of civic life, it’s home to the stunning Barcelona Cathedral, ancient plazas, and reminders of the old city’s past.
- Visit one of Antoni Gaudí's greatest works of modernist art, Park Güell, built between 1900 and 1914 as part of a failed housing project. This whimsical park in Barcelona’s hills blends colorful mosaics, serpentine benches, and fairy-tale structures with panoramic city views.
- See Barcelona’s 1992 Olympic Park, perched along the sparkling Mediterranean Sea. Built for the Summer Olympics, the park transformed the city’s waterfront with iconic venues like the Palau Sant Jordi and Montjuïc Olympic Stadium. Today it’s a mix of sports history, stunning ocean views, and a reminder of Barcelona’s moment on the world stage.
- Listen for the sounds of both Spanish and Catalan—many Barcelonians are fluent in both. Spanish is spoken everywhere, while Catalan, the region’s historic language, often appears on menus, signs, and other public spaces.
Picasso Museum: Dive into over 4000 of Pablo Picasso’s early works, sketches, and paintings, all housed inside five stunning Gothic palaces.
La Boqueria market: Wander through colorful stalls, sampling fresh fruit, jamón, seafood, and local treats while soaking up the sights and smells of this iconic Barcelona market.
Day 10: Free day + optional Sagrada Família tour & sangria + Farewell Dinner
The day is yours to experience Barcelona as you please. Whether that means exploring a new neighborhood, lounging on a beach, or kicking back with some tapas and a pitcher of sangria, there are no wrong answers in BCN.
In the evening, it’s time for your Farewell Dinner to relive the best stories, the funniest inside jokes, and all the unforgettable moments you’ve shared.
Beaches on beaches: Barcelona’s coast is lined with beaches, each with its own personality. Hit Barceloneta for party vibes, Bogatell for a sporty crowd, or Ocata for a quieter escape.
Cuisine quest: From paella, a traditional rice dish, to Basque-style tapas, Barcelona has gastronomy locked down.
Day 11: Fly home
¡Adiós, amigos!
Translation: Goodbye, friends! Your next destination awaits—home. But this isn’t goodbye. It’s “See you later.” The only question is, where?
Which trip type is right for you?
Essential: Room with 3+ other travelers in conveniently located hostels. For budget-conscious extroverts who love a group moment.
Plus: Room with just one other person in 3- or 4-star hotels. Perfect for people who value privacy and recharging in their own space.
