The official language of Denmark is Danish—a wonderfully quirky language that even other Scandinavians find hard to understand. The good news? Danes are some of the most English-fluent people on the planet, so you'll have zero trouble getting around. But making even a small effort with the local language will earn you instant respect and probably a few laughs.

• Hello: Hej (HI)—yes, it's literally just "hi." Denmark is already winning.
• Goodbye: Hej hej (HI HI)—said twice, always cheerful, impossibly charming
• Thank you: Tak (tahg)—short, sweet, and used constantly. Master this one first.
• Please: Må jeg bede om (moh yai BEH-the om)—Danes don't actually use "please" as often as English speakers, so don't stress if this one doesn't flow naturally
• Cheers! Skål (skawl)—one of the great toasting words in all of Europe. Eye contact is mandatory. Look away and it's bad luck, apparently.
• Delicious: Lækkert (LEH-kert)—you'll need this one. Copenhagen's food scene demands it.
• Cozy/good vibes: Hyggeligt (HOO-geh-lee)—the adjective form of hygge, used to describe anything warm, cozy, and just plain good. Use it liberally.
• Cool/awesome: Fedt (fehd)—literally means "fat" but is used to mean cool. Danish slang is something else.
• Where is...? Hvor er...? (vor air)—point confidently and you're basically a local.

• “Copenhagen”’s name loosely translates to “merchant’s harbor”, and you’ll see why. The canals of Copenhagen are a staple of the city, and part of its unique charm

• “Hygge,” pronounced hoo-gah, is a Danish practice and way of life in finding joy in everyday moments. Hygge is about celebrating coziness, warmth and family.
• Biking in Scandinavia is a religion. If you have the chance, rent a bike and explore the streets by cycle! Just be sure to obey the local biking laws.
• Scandinavians are known for being nice and polite, but not necessarily outgoing. Don’t be put off if locals are a bit more reserved, just smile and greet with a friendly hej!
