Mexico is a popular and well-visited destination, and the vast majority of travelers — including solo visitors — have safe and positive experiences. The safety picture varies significantly by region: major tourist destinations like Mexico City, Oaxaca, the Yucatán Peninsula, San Miguel de Allende, and the Pacific coast towns are generally safe and heavily visited. Some states and border regions have elevated security concerns — check your government's current travel advisory for specific guidance on which areas to avoid. Standard precautions apply everywhere: use reputable transport (Uber is widely available in cities and generally safer than street taxis), keep valuables secure, be aware of your surroundings, and avoid displaying expensive electronics or jewelry. Travel insurance is strongly recommended. Traveling with a reputable group tour operator significantly reduces logistical friction and gives you access to local guides who know how to navigate the country safely.

Mexico City is one of the great cities of the Americas, and a few things make a first visit significantly smoother. The city sits at 2,240 meters above sea level, and some visitors experience mild altitude effects — headaches and fatigue — for the first day or two. The metro is excellent, very affordable, and the most efficient way to get around; Uber is a safe and convenient alternative for areas not well-served by metro. Tap water is not safe to drink in Mexico City — use bottled or filtered water for drinking and brushing teeth. The food scene is extraordinary and ranges from street tacos costing a few pesos to some of the best restaurants in Latin America. Neighborhoods like Roma, Condesa, Coyoacán, and Polanco each have their own distinct character and are worth exploring individually. The city's major museums — the Museo Nacional de Antropología, the Frida Kahlo Museum, the Museo Soumaya — are among the best in the Americas and require advance booking for the most popular ones.

The Yucatán Peninsula and Oaxaca are two of Mexico's most compelling destinations, and they offer very different experiences. The Yucatán is defined by its Maya heritage and its Caribbean and Gulf coastlines: Chichén Itzá and Uxmal are among the most impressive archaeological sites in the Americas, the cenotes (natural sinkholes filled with crystal-clear water) are extraordinary for swimming and diving, and the colonial city of Mérida is one of the most beautiful in Mexico. Tulum has become one of the most talked-about beach destinations in the world. Oaxaca, in the south of the country, is a different proposition entirely: a city of extraordinary culinary tradition (mole, tlayudas, mezcal), vibrant indigenous craft culture, and some of the most important archaeological sites in Mexico at Monte Albán and Mitla. The Oaxacan coast — Puerto Escondido, Mazunte, Zipolite — is a quieter, more authentic alternative to the Yucatán's resort towns.

Mexico is large enough that no single trip can cover it comprehensively, and the key is choosing a focus. Two weeks is enough for a meaningful first trip — either Mexico City plus Oaxaca, or the Yucatán Peninsula (Mérida, Chichén Itzá, Tulum, cenotes), or Mexico City plus the colonial cities of Guanajuato and San Miguel de Allende. Three weeks lets you combine two of these regions. A month opens up the Pacific coast, Baja California, Chiapas, or a slower journey through multiple states. Domestic flights are affordable and make covering ground efficiently very practical — Mexico City to Oaxaca is a 45-minute flight, and Mexico City to Cancún is about two and a half hours. The country's size means that trying to combine too many regions in a short trip results in spending more time in transit than in the places themselves.

Mexico is one of the best-value destinations accessible from North America and Europe, and the exchange rate makes it particularly affordable for travelers paying in US dollars, euros, or pounds. Street food — tacos, tamales, tlayudas, elotes — is excellent and costs almost nothing. Local restaurants and markets offer full meals for very little. Accommodation ranges from very affordable hostels and guesthouses to boutique hotels and luxury resorts. Transport between cities by ADO bus (the main intercity bus operator) is comfortable and very affordable. Where costs add up is in tourist-facing restaurants and activities in resort areas like Tulum and Los Cabos, where prices have risen significantly in recent years. Overall, Mexico offers extraordinary value, particularly if you eat where locals eat and travel by bus rather than domestic flights for shorter distances.
