Citizens of many countries — including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and most EU nations — can visit Thailand visa-free for stays of up to 30 days (recently extended to 60 days for many nationalities — check the current policy for your passport before you travel, as Thailand has updated its visa-free rules in recent years). Thailand also offers a tourist visa (TR) for longer stays, available through Thai embassies and consulates before travel. The Thailand Elite Visa is an option for longer-term stays. On arrival, you'll need to show proof of onward travel and sufficient funds for your stay. Always verify the current requirements for your specific nationality before you travel, as Thailand's visa policies have been updated and can change.

Thailand's islands are divided between two coasts — the Gulf of Thailand (east) and the Andaman Sea (west) — and they have different weather patterns and different characters. On the Gulf side, Koh Samui is the largest and most developed, with good infrastructure and a range of accommodation. Koh Phangan is famous for the Full Moon Party but has quieter beaches away from the party scene. Koh Tao is the best island for learning to dive — it's one of the most affordable dive certification destinations in the world. On the Andaman side, Phuket is the largest and most developed, with excellent beaches and a well-established tourist infrastructure. Koh Lanta is quieter and more relaxed. Koh Phi Phi is famous for its dramatic scenery but can be very crowded. The Similan Islands, accessible by liveaboard from Khao Lak, offer some of the best diving in Southeast Asia. For a first trip, Koh Tao for diving or Koh Lanta for relaxation are excellent choices.

Thailand is one of the most accessible destinations in Southeast Asia, but a few things make a first visit significantly smoother. Temple etiquette is important — dress modestly when visiting wats (temples), covering shoulders and knees, and remove your shoes before entering. Finally, the heat and humidity in Thailand are intense, particularly from March to May — staying hydrated and avoiding the midday sun is genuinely important.

Thailand's best travel season varies by region, but the general rule is that the cool, dry season from November to February is the most comfortable time to visit most of the country. This is peak season — the weather is excellent, the islands are at their most beautiful, and visitor numbers are at their highest. March to May is hot and dry — temperatures can exceed 40°C in some areas, and the heat is intense. The wet season from June to October brings monsoon rains, particularly to the Andaman coast (Phuket, Koh Lanta, Koh Phi Phi), which can make some islands less accessible. The Gulf coast (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao) has a different weather pattern and is generally better from February to October. Chiang Mai in the north is best from November to February, when the air is clearest and temperatures are most comfortable for exploring.

Thailand is one of the best destinations in the world for solo travelers — safe, affordable, easy to navigate, and with a well-developed backpacker infrastructure that makes meeting people almost effortless. The Khao San Road area in Bangkok, the islands, and Chiang Mai all have thriving hostel scenes and social cultures built around group activities, tours, and shared experiences. Solo women travelers generally find Thailand very safe and comfortable, though standard precautions apply in busy nightlife areas. Solo dining is completely comfortable here — Thai street food culture is perfectly suited to eating alone, and the variety and quality of street food means you can eat extraordinarily well for very little. The main consideration for solo travel in Thailand is the occasional loneliness of moving quickly between destinations — joining a group tour or a cooking class is one of the best ways to meet people and slow down.

Thailand is one of the most affordable destinations in Southeast Asia, which is a big part of its enduring appeal. Street food — pad thai, som tam, khao man gai, mango sticky rice — is excellent and costs almost nothing. Local restaurants and markets offer full meals for very little. Accommodation ranges from very cheap guesthouses and hostels to boutique hotels and luxury resorts. Transport within the country is affordable: overnight trains and buses between cities, songthaews (shared pickup trucks) on the islands, and the Grab app in cities are all very reasonable. Overall, Thailand offers extraordinary value, particularly if you eat locally and use local transport rather than tourist-oriented services.
