Singapore’s four official languages are English, Mandarin, Malay, and Tamil—but the real shared language is Singlish, a gloriously chaotic blend of all of the above. English is spoken everywhere, so you’ll never be lost. But a little Singlish goes a long way.

• Lah (lah—rhymes with “spa”): The all-purpose sentence ender. Adds warmth, emphasis, or mild exasperation. “No worries, lah” covers most situations.
• Can (kan): The most efficient word in Singapore. Means yes, okay, sure, and done. One word, infinite uses.
• Cannot (KAN-not): The opposite. Just as useful.
• Chope (chohp—rhymes with “hope”): To reserve a seat, usually by leaving a tissue packet on the table at a hawker centre. It’s a system. Respect it.
• Alamak (AH-lah-mak): An expression of shock, surprise, or mild dismay. Beloved across all ages. Deploy freely.
• Shiok (shee-OHK): Means delicious, excellent, or deeply satisfying. You will say this constantly.
• Makan (MAH-kan): Malay for “eat.” You’ll hear it everywhere because food is Singapore’s national sport.
• Wah (wah—exactly as it looks): A universal exclamation of awe, admiration, or pleasant surprise. “Wah, this laksa is incredible” is a perfectly valid sentence.
• Can I have the bill, please? (works perfectly in English): Alternatively, just mime a signing gesture. Universal.
• One more, please (works in any language): Essential in any hawker stall, coffee shop, or bar. You’ll use it.

Singapore operates at a level of efficiency that will make you wonder why everywhere else can’t just...try a little harder? 

• Public transit is exceptional: The MRT is clean, air-conditioned, reliable, and incredibly easy to navigate. It’ll get you almost anywhere. 

• Food is a lifestyle: Singaporeans talk about food constantly, plan around it, debate it, and take it very seriously. You’re in good company. 

• It’s incredibly safe: Singapore consistently ranks among the safest cities in the world. Walk around at any hour and feel completely at ease. 

• Everything is spotless: The city is famously clean. The rules are real, they’re enforced, and honestly, it shows. 

• It’s hot: Equatorial heat and humidity year-round. Pack light, stay hydrated, and lean into it. 

• Hawker culture is UNESCO-recognized: Eating at outdoor hawker centres isn’t just affordable and delicious—it’s genuinely a cultural institution.

• Chicken rice: The national dish. Simple, perfect, and the subject of passionate local debate about who makes it best. Try it at Tian Tian in Maxwell Food Centre. 

• Laksa: A rich, spicy coconut curry noodle soup that will rearrange your idea of what soup can be. 

• Char kway teow: Flat rice noodles stir-fried with egg, Chinese sausage, bean sprouts, and dark soy sauce over high heat. The wok hei (smoky char) is everything. 

• Chilli crab: Messy, sweet-spicy, and completely worth it. Order the mantou (fried buns) for soaking up the sauce. 

• Kaya toast: A breakfast staple—toast with coconut-pandan jam and soft-boiled eggs. The coffee is strong and served with condensed milk. Non-negotiable. 

• Durian: The king of fruits. Famously pungent, famously divisive. You should probably try it once. 

• Hawker stall desserts: Chendol, ice kachang, mango pomelo sago—Singapore’s dessert game is deepl y underrated. 

• Singapore Sling: If cities had signature drinks, Singapore’s would be the Sling, and this legendary gin-based cocktail has been a local favorite for generations. Consider it your official welcome drink to the Lion City.

From futuristic architecture to mind-blowing street food to surreal vertical gardens that look like trees, you’ll never run out of things to see. 

• Visit Gardens by the Bay: Walk the OCBC Skyway above the Supertrees, explore the Cloud Forest’s indoor waterfall, and come back at night for the light show. 

• Eat at a hawker center: Maxwell Food Centre, Lau Pa Sat, Tiong Bahru Market—pick one, get a tray, and commit to ordering more than you think you can eat. 

• Go to the top of Marina Bay Sands: The SkyPark observation deck. The views. The photos. The moment. 

• Explore the cultural neighborhoods: Chinatown, Little India, and Kampong Glam in one day is completely doable and genuinely one of the best ways to understand Singapore. 

• Take the cable car to Sentosa: Grab the gondola from Mount Faber and arrive to the island in style. 

• Catch the Supertree light show: Every evening at 7:45 pm and 8:45 pm. Free. Spectacular. Don’t miss it. 

• Have a Singapore Sling at Raffles: It’s touristy. Do it anyway.

Singapore is one of the most multicultural places on earth, and it wears that identity with real pride.  

• Chinese, Malay, Indian, and Eurasian cultures all coexist and shape everything from the food to the festivals to the architecture. The blend is genuine, not curated. 

• Festivals are frequent and celebrated across communities: Chinese New Year, Deepavali, Hari Raya, and Christmas are all major events, and all feel like everyone’s celebration. 

• Respect goes a long way: Singaporeans are polite and formal in public spaces. Queues are orderly. Courtesy is expected. You’ll fit right in if you’re just a decent human. 

• The arts scene is quietly excellent: Esplanade, the National Gallery, and a thriving independent music and design community punch well above the city’s size. 

• Efficiency is a cultural value, not just a government talking point. Things work here. It’s refreshing.

Singapore sits on the equator, which means it’s warm, humid, and sunny (with bursts of rain) pretty much year-round. Here’s how the seasons shake out: 

• February–April: Slightly drier and less humid than the rest of the year. Arguably the most comfortable for walking around. Chinese New Year falls here—incredible if you can catch it. 

• May–July: Hot and sunny with occasional afternoon showers. Great weather for outdoor exploring, just embrace the heat. 

• August–October: Shoulder season. Still warm, slightly more rain. Crowds thin out a bit and flights can be more affordable. 

• November–January: The northeast monsoon season brings more rain, but Singapore’s showers are usually short and intense, not all-day affairs. The city is lively with holiday energy in December.
