Greek is one of the world’s oldest languages, and locals genuinely appreciate any effort you make with it: 

• Yia sas: Hello / goodbye (formal) / Yia sou (casual) 

• Efharisto: Thank you 

• Parakalo: Please / you’re welcome 

• Signomi: Excuse me / sorry 

• Pou einai...?: Where is...?

• Opa: An expression of joy, excitement, or celebration—you’ll hear it constantly

Athens is warm, chaotic, and deeply human. A few things to know before you arrive: 

• Greeks eat late. Lunch is around 2-3PM, dinner rarely before 9PM. Restaurants that are empty at 7PM are not bad restaurants—they’re just waiting for the actual dinner hour. 

• Hospitality is genuine. Philoxenia—the Greek concept of hospitality to strangers—is real and deeply embedded in the culture. People will go out of their way to help you. 

• Tipping is appreciated. Around 10% at restaurants is standard. Round up for taxis. It’s not mandatory, but it’s noticed and appreciated. 

• The heat is real. Athens in summer is hot. Plan outdoor activities for early morning or late afternoon and take a long lunch break in the shade like the locals do. 

• Strikes and protests happen. Athens has an active civic culture. Occasional transport strikes or demonstrations are part of life. Stay informed and flexible. 

• Cash is still useful. Cards are widely accepted, but smaller tavernas and market vendors often prefer cash. Keep some euros on hand.

Greek food is honest, generous, and built around sharing. Here’s what to eat: 

• Mezedes: Small shared plates—tzatziki, taramasalata, dolmades, grilled octopus, saganaki. Order a spread and work through it slowly. 

• Souvlaki: Grilled meat on a skewer, wrapped in pita with tomato, onion, and tzatziki. The best fast food in the world. Find a good souvlatzidiko and eat standing up. 

• Moussaka: Layers of eggplant, minced meat, and béchamel. A Greek classic that’s worth seeking out at a proper taverna. 

• Fresh seafood: Athens is close to the sea, and the fish tavernas in the port neighborhoods of Piraeus and Mikrolimano are exceptional. 

• Greek salad (horiatiki): Tomatoes, cucumber, olives, red onion, and a thick slab of feta. Simple and perfect, especially in summer. 

• Loukoumades: Fried honey doughnuts, crispy outside and pillowy inside. Athens has shops dedicated entirely to them. Go to one. 

• Ouzo and tsipouro: Greece’s anise-flavored spirit and its grape-based cousin. Both are meant to be sipped slowly with food, not rushed.

Athens is a city where ancient history and modern life exist side by side in a way that’s genuinely unique: 

• The Acropolis: The most important ancient monument in the Western world. Go early, go with a guide, and give it the time it deserves. 

• The Acropolis Museum: One of the best archaeological museums in the world, built directly over an ancient neighborhood. The Parthenon gallery is extraordinary. 

• The Plaka: Athens’ oldest and most charming neighborhood, at the foot of the Acropolis. Best explored on foot with no particular plan. 

• Monastiraki: A lively neighborhood with a famous flea market, great street food, and some of the best views of the Acropolis from its rooftop bars. 

• The Ancient Agora: The marketplace and civic center of ancient Athens, where Socrates once walked and debated. Less crowded than the Acropolis and just as fascinating. 

• Cape Sounion: A 70km drive from Athens brings you to the Temple of Poseidon perched on a cliff above the Aegean. The sunset here is one of the best in Greece. 

• Delphi: A full day trip but absolutely worth it—one of the most dramatic and historically significant sites in the ancient world.

Athens is the birthplace of democracy, philosophy, and the Olympic Games—and that legacy shapes everything: 

• Philosophy and debate: Athens produced Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. The tradition of questioning, discussing, and arguing ideas is still very much alive in Greek culture. Opinions are held passionately and shared freely. 

• Democracy’s birthplace: The concept of democratic governance was born in Athens around 500 BCE. Walking through the ancient Agora where those early debates happened is genuinely moving. 

• Orthodox Christianity: The Greek Orthodox Church is central to Greek identity and culture. Churches are everywhere, religious festivals are celebrated seriously, and Easter in Athens is one of the most extraordinary events in the country. 

• Family life: Greek culture is deeply family-oriented. Multi-generational dinners, Sunday lunches, and a general warmth toward children and elders are woven into everyday life. 

• A city in transition: Modern Athens is a dynamic, creative city with a thriving arts scene, great restaurants, and a young population that’s reshaping what the city can be. It’s not just a museum—it’s very much alive.

Athens is a year-round destination, but the season shapes the experience significantly: 

• Spring (April-May): The best overall window. Mild temperatures, wildflowers on the hillsides, and the city at its most pleasant before the summer heat arrives. Easter in Athens is spectacular if you can time it right. 

• Summer (June-August): Hot and busy, but Athens in summer has real energy. The nightlife is at its peak, outdoor dining is everywhere, and the long evenings are made for exploring. Avoid midday heat by planning accordingly. 

• Fall (September-October): Warm, quieter, and very comfortable. The sea is still warm from summer, the crowds have thinned, and the city feels more relaxed. A strong case for the best time to visit. 

• Winter (November-March): Mild by northern European standards, with occasional rain. The city is quiet, affordable, and genuinely local. Christmas and New Year in Athens have their own charm, and the major sites are practically crowd-free.
