Venice trips

Italian is the language of Venice, though the Venetian dialect is its own thing entirely. A few basics will take you far: 

• Ciao: Hello / goodbye 

• Buongiorno: Good morning / good day 

• Grazie: Thank you 

• Prego: You’re welcome

• Il conto, per favore: The check, please

Venice is unlike any other city on Earth, and that comes with its own set of unwritten rules: 

• Venice is a walking city. There are no cars, no bikes, no scooters. Everything happens on foot or by boat. Wear comfortable shoes and embrace the pace. 

• Get lost on purpose. The city’s labyrinthine streets are confusing by design. Wandering without a destination is one of the great Venice experiences. 

• Crowds are real. Venice is one of the most visited cities in the world. Early mornings and late evenings are when the city breathes. Plan your major visits accordingly. 

• Tipping is not customary. A small rounding up is appreciated. Watch for “coperto”—a cover charge at sit-down restaurants. 

• Respect the residents. Venice has a shrinking local population that lives alongside millions of tourists. Be considerate: keep noise down in residential areas and don’t sit on bridges or steps. 

• Vaporetto is your best friend. The water bus system connects the whole city and the islands. Get a travel pass and use it freely.

Venetian cuisine is shaped entirely by the lagoon—seafood-forward, simple, and deeply local: 

• Cicchetti: Venice’s answer to tapas—small bites served at bacari. Creamed salt cod on bread, marinated sardines, meatballs. Order a spread and a glass of prosecco. 

• Sarde in saor: Sweet and sour sardines marinated with onions, raisins, and pine nuts. A Venetian classic that’s been on menus for centuries. 

• Risotto al nero di seppia: Black squid ink risotto, rich and briny and completely unique to this part of Italy. 

• Fritto misto: A mixed fry of seafood—calamari, shrimp, soft-shell crab. Best eaten standing up at a bacaro. 

• Spritz: The Aperol spritz was born in the Veneto region. Drinking one in Venice is not a tourist move—it’s the correct thing to do. 

• Gelato: Not all gelato is equal. Look for artisanal shops with covered containers and natural colors. 

• Pastries: Fritelle (fried doughnuts), baicoli (thin butter biscuits), and zaleti (cornmeal cookies with raisins) are the local specialties worth tracking down.

Venice is small enough to walk across but deep enough to explore for a week: 

• St. Mark’s Basilica: One of the most extraordinary churches in the world, covered in golden Byzantine mosaics. Go early to avoid the longest lines. 

• The Grand Canal: The main waterway through the city, lined with palazzos. Take the vaporetto from one end to the other for a free tour of Venice’s most dramatic architecture. 

• The Rialto Bridge and Market: The oldest bridge in Venice, and the market beneath it is one of the best places to see the city’s food culture up close. 

• Dorsoduro: Venice’s most livable neighborhood—great art (the Peggy Guggenheim Collection is here), good bacari, and a local energy that’s harder to find near St. Mark’s. 

• The islands: Murano (glass-blowing), Burano (colorful fishing houses), and Torcello (ancient mosaics) are all short boat rides away and completely worth the trip. 

• A gondola ride: Yes, it’s touristy. Do it anyway. 

• An evening bacaro crawl: The most authentic Venice experience there is.

Venice is a city that has been doing things its own way for over a thousand years: 

• A maritime republic: Venice was an independent republic and one of the most powerful trading empires in the world for centuries. That history of independence and ingenuity is still part of the city’s character. 

• Art everywhere: From the Byzantine mosaics of St. Mark’s to the Renaissance paintings in the Accademia, Venice is one of the great art cities of the world. 

• Carnival: Venice’s annual Carnival is one of the most famous festivals in Europe—elaborate masks, costumes, and a city that transforms completely for two weeks in February. 

• Craftsmanship: Murano glass, Burano lace, handmade masks—Venice has a deep tradition of artisanal craft that’s still very much alive. 

• A city in conversation with water: Everything about Venetian life is shaped by the lagoon. The architecture, the food, the transport, the festivals. It’s a relationship unlike anything else in the world.

Venice is beautiful year-round, but timing makes a real difference: 

• Spring (April-June): One of the best windows. Mild weather, manageable crowds before the summer peak, and the city looking its most beautiful. Avoid Easter weekend if you can—it gets very busy. 

• Summer (July-August): Hot, humid, and extremely crowded. The city can feel overwhelming at peak times. That said, evenings are magical and the energy is high. Go early in the morning and late at night. 

• Fall (September-November): Arguably the best time to visit. Crowds drop significantly after September, the light is extraordinary, and the city feels more like itself. October is a particularly good month. 

• Winter (December-February): Cold, occasionally foggy, and hauntingly beautiful. Carnival in February is spectacular. The rest of winter is quiet, affordable, and genuinely atmospheric in a way summer can’t match.
