The official language of Portugal is Portuguese—specifically European Portuguese, which sounds noticeably different from the Brazilian Portuguese you might have heard before. It’s faster, more clipped, and full of sounds that don’t exist in English, which makes it all the more satisfying when you nail a phrase. Locals genuinely appreciate the effort, even if your pronunciation needs work. 

• Hello: Olá (oh-LAH)—the universal Portuguese greeting. Simple, friendly, and works in every situation. 

• Hi (casual): Oi (oy)—the casual, breezy hello used between friends. Short, sweet, and very Lisbon. 

• Goodbye: Adeus (ah-DAY-oosh)—the formal farewell. Tchau (chow) is the casual version and far more common in everyday conversation. 

• Thank you: Obrigado (oh-bree-GAH-doo) if you’re male, Obrigada (oh-bree-GAH-dah) if you’re female—one of the first things to learn and one of the most appreciated. Use it constantly. 

• Please/you’re welcome: Por favor (por fah-VOR) for please, and De nada (deh NAH-dah) for you’re welcome. Two phrases that will take you very far. 

• Cheers! Saúde (sah-OO-deh)—literally means “health,” and yes, eye contact is expected. Don’t skip it. 

• Delicious: Delicioso (deh-lee-SYOH-zoo)—because between the pastéis de nata, the bacalhau, and the piri piri, you will absolutely need this word. 

• A coffee, please: Um café, por favor (oom kah-FEH por fah-VOR)—essential. Lisbon runs on coffee, and a café is always an espresso. Don’t ask for a big cup unless you want to out yourself immediately. 

• One more wine, please: Mais um vinho, por favor (mysh oom VEEN-yoo por fah-VOR)—Portugal has some of the best wine in the world at prices that will genuinely shock you. Use this phrase liberally. 

• Where is...? Onde fica...? (ON-deh FEE-kah)—pair with a confident point at your map and you’re basically a local.

Life in Lisbon moves at a relaxed, sun-soaked pace with lots of time spent outdoors: 

• Cafe culture: Espresso breaks and long meals are part of everyday life. 

• Late nights: Dinner often starts late, and nightlife can last until sunrise. 

• Outdoor living: Locals spend tons of time at beaches, viewpoints, plazas, and waterfronts. 

• Walkable neighborhoods: Lisbon is best explored by wandering through its steep cobblestone streets. 

• Trams: Vintage yellow trams are still a major part of daily transportation around the city.

• Pastéis de nata: Portugal’s iconic custard tart with crispy pastry and caramelized tops.

• Portuguese wine: Vinho Verde, port wine, and local reds are staples. 

• Coffee culture: Small, strong espresso drinks fuel the city throughout the day.
