Itinerary

Day 1: Overnight flight
Board your overnight flight and get ready to trade your everyday view for the neon-lit streets, serene shrines, and endless ramen bowls of Japan. Catch some zzz’s now or binge through Bullet Train and Blade Runner to get those "Japan is living in the future” type of vibes. The Tokyo and Seoul trip of your dreams starts now.
Day 2: Arrive in Tokyo
Say konnichiwa to Tokyo! With more people, vending machines, and Michelin-starred restaurants than you can imagine, this city is a sensory overload in the best way. Today is all about settling in, meeting your fellow adventurers, and starting to feel the pulse of Japan’s capital.
- Arrive at the airport in the morning and meet up with your Tour Director and fellow travelers before heading to your accommodation.
- Start settling in and get the details on tomorrow’s schedule.
Day 3: Explore Tokyo + Welcome Dinner
Tokyo is a mix of tradition and pop culture that’s uniquely Japanese: peaceful temples surrounded by incense smoke, bustling districts like Shibuya flashing with LED billboards, and neighborhoods like Harajuku where self-expression is the dress code. With over 37 million people, aka the world’s largest city, Tokyo feels like a universe of its own—and today you get to explore it.
In the evening, enjoy your Welcome Dinner. Hosted by your Tour Director, this kickoff dinner is all about meeting your fellow travelers, swapping stories, and easing into the rest of the trip ahead.
- Join a local guide for a bus and walking tour of Tokyo. You’ll get the scoop on everything from Shinto shrines to vending machine culture (yes, there are thousands of them—and they sell everything).
- Check out the latest fashion trends as you wander Takeshita Street in Harajuku, the birthplace of Japan’s wildest fashion trends. Expect colorful streetwear, rainbow desserts, and maybe a glimpse of cosplayers bringing your favorite anime characters to life.
- Step back in time at Tokyo’s oldest Buddhist temple, Sensoji Temple, complete with the iconic red Kaminarimon Gate and Nakamise shopping street. Pro tip: cleanse your hands at the purification fountain and try your luck with an omikuji fortune.
- Pass through Shibuya’s world-famous scramble crossing, snap a pic with the loyal Hachiko statue, and see firsthand how centuries-old traditions and modern life collide.
Ask your Tour Director:
- How to say simple phrases like “hello” and “thank you” in Japanese.
- What the best souvenir snacks are: Head to 7 Eleven, Family Mart, Don Quijote, and more.
- How to navigate the subway like a pro: Get insider tips on reading Tokyo’s famously complex train maps, skipping the crowds, and finding the fastest routes to the spots you want to see.
- The best hidden food spots: From tiny ramen joints to hole-in-the-wall sushi bars, your Tour Director knows the local favorites that tourists often miss.
- What festivals or events are happening: Tokyo’s calendar is packed with seasonal festivals, pop-up events, and cultural celebrations—perfect for a spontaneous adventure.
- Where to snap the ultimate cityscape photos: Your Tour Director can point you to vantage points and secret rooftops to capture Tokyo’s skyline, from Shibuya Crossing chaos to Tokyo Tower at sunset.
- How to experience Japanese etiquette like a local: From bowing correctly to dining etiquette and onsen dos and don’ts, get the insider scoop so you can blend in and respect local customs.
- Which neighborhoods have which vibes after dark: multi-level clubs, tiny cocktail bars, karaoke—Tokyo knows how to do nightlife.
Day 4: Free day + optional Hakone cable car & Lake Ashi cruise
Want to continue immersing yourself in the culture and convenience stores of Tokyo? That’s cool. Want to head to an active volcano? That’s cool, too. Say hello to the mountain air and misty lakes of Hakone. Opt in to one of Japan’s most unique slices of life filled with hot spring baths, soaring views of Mt. Fuji, and gorgeous waterfront shrines.
Tokyo Skytree: Take in panoramic views from one of the tallest towers in the world. At 2,080 feet, it’s not just a skyline shot—it’s the see-all-of-Tokyo, maybe-even-Mt.-Fuji kind of view.
Omoide Yokocho: Translation: memory lane. Slip into this lantern-lit alley near Shinjuku Station for smoky yakitori (grilled chicken skewers), tiny izakaya bars, and a throwback to post-WWII Tokyo.
Akihabara Electric Town: Dive headfirst into anime, manga, and gaming heaven. From multi-floor arcades to shops selling rare figurines and retro consoles, this is otaku paradise.
Japanese hot springs: Hakone is famous for its natural hot spring onsens—dip into your ryokan’s or venture to a public onsen surrounded by forest views. Note: tattoos may not be allowed at some onsens, so check ahead.
Hakone Shrine: A peaceful forest shrine dating back to the 8th century, complete with lantern-lined paths and your chance for another close-up look at the torii gate you saw from the lake.
Day 5: Free day in Tokyo + optional Shimokitazawa neighborhood visit
Another day, another chance to peel back Tokyo’s endless layers. Head out with a plan or just wander Tokyo’s maaaany neighborhoods. Yesterday you may have gone big—towering views, famous shrines, bustling markets. Today, dive even deeper into Tokyo’s quirks. From the posh department stores of Ginza to the arcades of Shinjuku, every corner of this city has its own personality. And please, whatever you do, go find some mochi ice cream.
Ginza Shopping District: Tokyo’s version of Fifth Avenue, but shinier. Browse designer flagships, sprawling department stores, and maybe stop for high-end sushi while you’re here.
Nakano Broadway: Vintage manga, collectibles, and toy shops stacked floor to ceiling. Basically, a treasure hunt for Japan’s coolest pop culture finds.
Ueno Park & Ameyoko Market: Spend the morning among art museums and cherry blossoms (springtime bonus), then wander to the bustling street market for food stalls and bargain shopping.
Tsukiji Outer Market: Sushi for breakfast? Don’t mind if you do. Stroll through stalls stacked with fresh seafood, Japanese kitchenware, and street food snacks like tamagoyaki (rolled omelet).
Day 6: Travel to Seoul
Next up, South Korea. Fun fact: 20% of South Koreans (nearly 10 million people) live in Seoul. It’s modern, loud, and bursting at the seams with stories to tell. Take it all in during your first day in town.
- Hop on your flight from Tokyo to Seoul, then check in to your new hotel.
- Head out with your Tour Director for an introduction to the city by bus and foot.
- Walk the narrow, trendy streets of Ikseon-dong and Insa-dong, known for their charming alleyways and traditional hanok houses converted into modern cafes, restaurants, and bars.
Day 7: Explore Seoul + optional Korean cooking class in Seoul
Seoul is where old-world charm collides with cutting-edge cool. Picture tranquil palaces and temples tucked between modern skyscrapers, street markets filled with the aroma of spicy tteokbokki, and neighborhoods like Hongdae where K-pop music spills into the night. With over 9 million people calling it home, Seoul feels electric, dynamic, and endlessly surprising.
Seoul Sky: Feeling brave? Head up to the 123rd floor of the Seoul Sky Tower and try the thrilling outdoor bridge walk for a jolt of adrenaline while taking in the best views of the city.
Itaewon neighborhood: Wind through the vibrant, always-bustling neighborhood of Itaewon. A popular choice with travelers for its melting pot of cuisine, nightlife, and friendly crowds.
Ask your Tour Director:
- How to say simple phrases like “hello” and “thank you” in Korean.
- What the best souvenir snacks are and where to get them: Olive Young is the K-Beauty hub.
- The best hidden food spots: From tiny street food joints to hole-in-the-wall kbbq spots, your Tour Director knows the local favorites that tourists often miss.
- Where to snap the ultimate cityscape photos: Your Tour Director can point you to vantage points and secret rooftops to capture Seoul’s skyline.
- How to experience Korean etiquette like a local: From bowing correctly to dining etiquette and greeting dos and don’ts, get the insider scoop so you can blend in and respect local customs.
Day 8: Travel to Gyeongju + overnight temple stay
Known as a “museum without walls,” Gyeongju is the country’s ancient capital, and it is absolutely overflowing with history. It is home to tons of ancient archaeological sites like the Bulguksa Temple, Seokguram Grotto, and the Daereungwon Tomb Complex. It offers a combination of ancient history, cultural heritage, natural beauty, and is the backdrop to your overnight temple stay.
Temple stay details: This is true cultural immersion, so get ready to participate in several Buddhist practices guided by monks. You’ll wear provided temple clothing, eat vegan meals in silence, partake in group meditations (including 108 prostrations), and wake up at 5am—just like the monks do. Accommodations for temple stays are shared and divided by gender, which means you could share a room with 3–4 EF Ultimate Break travelers. Even if you purchased a single room upgrade, you will still have roommates, but bathrooms are private.
Day 9: Tour Gyeongju + travel to Seoul
From 57 BCE to 935 CE, Gyeongju was South Korea’s capital city. That’s nearly 1,000 years, making it one of South Korea’s most historic spots. Today you’ll trace the footsteps of kings and scholars as you explore royal tombs, ancient palaces, and serene temple grounds. After immersing yourself in Korea’s ancient past, you’ll do a total 180 and make your way back to Seoul.
- Wake up and savor the final hours of your peaceful temple stay with the sound of bells and smell of fresh mountain air before heading out to explore.
- Visit Cheonmachong Tomb and step inside this 5th–6th century burial mound, famous for the painting of a celestial white horse on its wall. Discover relics of royal life and learn what burial practices reveal about the Silla dynasty.
- Explore the elegant Donggung Palace built in 674 CE as a secondary residence for princes. Then marvel at the lotus-covered Wolji Pond that surrounds it.
- Board your bus and journey back to South Korea’s buzzing capital city for one last free hurrah.
Myeongdong food stalls: Grab skewers of tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes), hotteok (sweet pancakes), or tornado potatoes while wandering through one of Seoul’s busiest shopping districts.
Hongdae at night: This high-energy neighborhood is packed with live music, street performers, bars, and late-night eats, giving you a taste of Seoul’s creative, high-energy side.
Day 10: Free day in Seoul + optional K-Pop dance class + Farewell Dinner
Make today count! It’s your last full day in South Korea. Seoul is a city that never runs out of surprises—one moment you’re wandering palace courtyards that date back centuries, the next you’re sipping an iced latte in a neon-lit café shaped like a cartoon character. Whether you spend the day grabbing last-minute souvenirs in Myeongdong, hiking up to panoramic views at Namsan Tower, or diving into Hongdae after dark, Seoul is yours to explore however you want.
In the evening, it’s time for your Farewell Dinner. Relive the best stories, the funniest inside jokes, and all the unforgettable moments you’ve shared with new friends.
- Squeeze every last drop out of your Seoul adventure, stock up on K-beauty skincare, or get out there and try something new during your last day in Seoul.
- Share some laughs (and maybe shed a few tears) at an included Farewell Dinner with your group.
Jjimjilbang (Korean spa): Treat yourself to a classic Korean wellness ritual with saunas, hot tubs, and relaxation lounges—perfect after a long travel day.
Dongdaemun Design Plaza: A futuristic landmark designed by Zaha Hadid, with late-night shopping, exhibitions, and architecture that looks straight out of a sci-fi movie.
Days 11–12: Fly home
Annyeong, chingudeul!
Translation: Goodbye, friends! Your next destination awaits—home. But this isn’t goodbye. It’s “See you later.” The only question is, where?
