Itinerary

Day 1: Overnight flight
Board your overnight flight to Tokyo, the city that mixes old tradition with Blade Runner-esque futurism. Catch some zzz’s now to rest up for a trip full of sights and sick heights. Or binge through Bullet Train and Blade Runner to get those hyped up "I can’t believe I’m really here” type of vibes.
Day 2: Arrive in Tokyo
Your epic trek through Japan’s best elevations is about to begin. Upon arrival in the evening, a bus transfer will take you to your hotel. Take it easy and chillax, because over the next few days you WILL get your steps in while seeing some pinch-me views.
- Arrive at the airport in the evening and meet up with your Tour Director and fellow travelers before heading to your accommodation.
- Stretch it out and catch some early zzz’s before you take on Mt. Takao tomorrow.
Day 3: Hike Mt. Takao + Welcome Dinner in Mt. Fuji region
Today’s the day! Lace up your hiking boots and queue up your best pump-up playlist, you’re heading to Takao-san via train in the morning. Then kick off your first hike of the trip with Mt. Takao. While considered a relatively easy hike, the view is anything but beginner-level. Once at the top, enjoy stunning views of Japan’s mountainous woods and even Mt. Fuji on a clear day. Â
In the evening, enjoy your Welcome Dinner. Hosted by your Tour Director, this kickoff dinner will have you trading hiking poles for chopsticks in this hands-on-ramen-making class, where you’ll learn the art of perfect broth and noodles (then eat your creation, of course).Â
Hike statsÂ
Distance: 4.1 milesÂ
Descent: 1,312 feetÂ
Please note: All outdoor and hiking activities may be adjusted on tour due to local conditions, such as weather or trail closures.Â
- Head up Mt. Takao, a beloved peak just outside Tokyo. The trail may be approachable, but the views of forested mountains and even Mt. Fuji on a clear day make it unforgettable.
- Cap off the day with a Welcome Dinner hosted by your Tour Director. Share stories, meet your fellow adventurers, and toast to the start of your journey together.
- Learn how to make Japan’s most iconic comfort food—ramen. From simmering broth to pulling noodles, you’ll discover why this dish is so much more than a late-night snack.
Ask your Tour Director:
- The best viewpoints on Mt. Takao—there are a few hidden spots off the main trail where the scenery is even more magical.
- Insider tips on Japanese hiking culture, from trail etiquette to how locals celebrate reaching the summit.
- How to make the most of your time in the Mt. Fuji region—whether you’re into culture, food, or extra adventure, your TD knows the best options.
Day 4: Half-day hike up Mt. Ishiwariyama + optional kayaking excursion
Get a dose of that fresh mountain air and the crunch of gravel beneath your boots as you take on a half-day hike up Mt. Ishiwariyama, a moderate trail that results in sweeping views of the rugged landscapes and tranquil forests below. In the afternoon, choose your own pace: kick back and relax, or opt in for kayaking across calm alpine waters for a whole new view of the mountains.
Hike StatsÂ
Distance: 3.7 milesÂ
Elevation: 1,305 feetÂ
Please note: All outdoor and hiking activities may be adjusted on tour due to local conditions, such as weather or trail closures.Â
- Hit the trails of Mt. Ishiwariyama where you’ll trek up a challenging series of 400 stone steps (beware, it can be muddy and slippery) and a unique, cracked rock at the Ishiwari Shrine, where walking through the rock three times is said to bring good luck. And don’t forget to grab lunch from the conbini (convenience store) beforehand as you’ll be eating lunch on the trail!
- Spend your afternoon your way: unwind after your hike or grab a paddle and explore the pristine waters by kayak. Either way, you’ll be surrounded by mountain views you’ll never want to forget.
Day 5: Free day in Mt. Fuji region + evening transfer to Matsumoto
Take today at your own pace in the shadow of Japan’s most iconic peak: Mt. Fuji. Whether you’re snapping photos from below, strolling through nearby lakeside towns, or lacing up your boots to climb the summit (only possible July–September with advance planning), this is your chance to shape your own adventure. After a full day of exploration, regroup with your fellow travelers and transfer by bus to Matsumoto in the evening.
- Spend your day however you’d like in the Mt. Fuji region, whether that means tackling the trails, exploring local towns, or simply soaking in the views of Japan’s tallest mountain. Few places on Earth are this iconic.
- If you plan ahead, you can spend your free day summiting Mt. Fuji at a staggering 12,388 ft elevation gain. It’s an unforgettable challenge that puts you on top of Japan (literally).
- Wrap up your free time and board your bus for Matsumoto. By evening, you’ll be surrounded by the charm of this alpine hub, the perfect gateway to tomorrow’s adventures.
Climb Mt. Fuji (July–September only): If you want to check Japan’s most legendary hike off your list, today’s the day. Just note that summiting requires advance planning and must be arranged independently.
Lake Kawaguchi: Head to this peaceful lake at the base of Mt. Fuji. With reflection views of the peak, paddle boats, and charming cafes. It’s the perfect mix of chill and iconic.
Fujiyoshida Sengen Shrine: Step into history at this centuries-old shrine, where pilgrims once prayed before climbing Mt. Fuji. Surrounded by towering trees and traditional architecture, it’s a beautiful cultural detour.
Day 6: Hike up Mt. Yake
Boots laced, pack loaded—it’s time to take on one of Japan’s most dramatic hikes. Today you’ll conquer Mt. Yake-Dake, the only active volcano in the northern Japanese Alps. Starting in the lush Kamikochi Valley, you’ll cross the famous Kappa Bashi Bridge before ascending over 3,000 feet in elevation. Expect steaming vents, rocky ridgelines, and wide-open views that make every step worth it. The descent winds down toward the Nakanoyu Onsen route, where tired muscles will thank you for the chance to soak in natural hot springs.
Hike StatsÂ
Distance: 5.2 milesÂ
Elevation: 3,133 feetÂ
Please note: All outdoor and hiking activities may be adjusted on tour due to local conditions, such as weather or trail closures. Â
- Challenge yourself with a 5–6-hour trek up Mt. Yake-Dake, a volcanic peak that feels equal parts rugged and otherworldly. Every twist in the trail offers new views and a sense of accomplishment.
- Experience the dramatic landscapes of Kamikochi Valley, from rushing rivers to wooden suspension bridges, before climbing into a world shaped by volcanic activity.
- End your trek with the option to dip into soothing onsen waters—a reward that’s about as classically Japanese as it gets.
Day 7: Hike Nakasendo Trail from Narai to Yabuhara
Step back in time on the Nakasendo Trail, a historic route that once connected Tokyo and Kyoto during the Edo period. Today you’ll hike from Narai to Yabuhara, tackling the Torii Pass—a peaceful yet challenging stretch lined with cedar forests and glimpses of the old travel road. Along the way, you’ll pass through “Narai of a Thousand Houses,” once the most prosperous post town on the trail. With preserved wooden inns, atmospheric streets, and centuries of history echoing through the valley, this hike blends nature with nostalgia in the best way.
Hike StatsÂ
Distance: 5.3 milesÂ
Elevation: 2,070 feetÂ
Please note: All outdoor and hiking activities may be adjusted on tour due to local conditions, such as weather or trail closures. Â
- Spend time in Narai, a beautifully preserved post town lined with wooden inns and traditional storefronts. It’s a photographer’s dream and a living piece of Edo-period history.
- Follow in the footsteps of samurai and merchants along the Nakasendo Trail, a route that feels more like a time capsule than a hiking path. You’ll be immersed in history with every step.
- Cross the Torii Pass, a moderate climb that rewards you with peaceful forests and sweeping valley views. The quietness of the trail makes it easy to imagine travelers from centuries past making the same journey.
Day 8: Hike Nakasendo Trail from Tsumago to Magome
Your journey along the Nakasendo Trail continues with one of its most beloved sections. Today you’ll hike from Tsumago to Magome, a gentle yet scenic walk that takes approximately four hours. Expect cobblestone paths, forested stretches, and charming countryside that look straight out of a storybook. After weaving through lush greenery and old-world villages, you’ll arrive in Magome—a picturesque town of sloping streets, wooden houses, and mountains that will make you feel worlds away from modern Japan.
Hike Stats
Distance: 4.9 milesÂ
Elevation: 2,070 feetÂ
Please note: All outdoor and hiking activities may be adjusted on tour due to local conditions, such as weather or trail closures. Â
- Trek from Tsumago to Magome, one of the most iconic stretches of the Nakasendo Trail. This hike blends accessibility with postcard-worthy scenery, making it a favorite for travelers of all levels.
- Enjoy the slower pace of Japan’s countryside, where rice fields, forests, and trickling streams line your path. It’s a side of Japan few get to see, but one you’ll remember long after your trip.
- Explore Magome, a beautifully preserved mountain town with cobblestone streets, traditional shops, and panoramic views. It’s the perfect capstone to your journey along ancient Nakasendo.
- In the evening, you’ll settle into your accommodation in Nagoya.
Day 9: Travel to Osaka + Farewell Dinner + optional karaoke
It’s your last full day in Japan—make it count. Hop on the train from Nagoya to Osaka, then the afternoon is yours to fill up on sushi, hit up a few vending machines, grab those last souvenirs, or just take it slow and treat yourself to some R&R after all that hiking.
In the evening, it’s time for your Farewell Dinner. Relive the best stories, the funniest inside jokes, and all the unforgettable moments you’ve shared with new friends. Raise a glass, maybe shed a few tears, and start planning your next adventure.Â
- Treat your taste buds to the city’s famous street snack—Takoyaki. These golden, fried balls are filled with tender octopus, green onions, and pickled ginger, then drizzled with savory sauce and mayo.
- Share some laughs (and maybe shed a few tears) at an included Farewell Dinner with your group.
Dotonbori: Osaka’s most famous entertainment district is a feast for the senses. Filled with bars, restaurants, and shops, this area is known for its neon signs, animated billboards, and, yes, octo-pops (exactly what it sounds like—fried octopus on a stick!).
Day 10: Fly home
SayĹŤnara, tomodachi!
Translation: goodbye, friends! Your next destination awaits—home. But this isn’t goodbye. It’s “See you later.” The only question is, where?

When traveling to Japan it's important to prepare for a long travel day. Flying from the US, it is not uncommon to have multiple legs of your journey, up to 3.
Generally, expect to depart your home gateway on day one in the in the evening. Given the time changes, you'll likely arrive in the afternoon or evening on day 2. Don't worry, activities won't start until the morning of day 3 to give everyone enough time to arrive. Direct flights to Japan are incredibly limited, as such you should expect 1-3 layovers. Worried about jetlag, delayed flights, or just want more time to explore, we strongly encourage extending your stay to arrive early or stay late. This way you can settle in without the stress of missing anything.
We recommend budgeting $80-$100 per day to cover tipping, food, and shopping. You know your spending habits best, if you want to do it all budget on the higher end.Â
The local currency will be the yen. We strongly advise that you take debit and credit cards (ideally with a chip), which can be used to withdraw cash at local banks as needed. Make sure to check with your bank or credit card company about withdrawal fees and/or foreign exchange fees. While better rates of exchange are usually available overseas, ordering currency from your local bank may be an option.
Your Tour Director is with you during your entire trip. They're part logistics master, making sure you get to see all that we have planned; part rockstar, sharing with your local hotspots; and part guru, sharing and inviting you into the culture. Our Tour Directors are fully trained and ready to support you in making your journey safe, seamless, and unforgettable!
In some locations you will be met by a local guide who will lead you through our traveler-inspired walking tour. You'll get some local history and culture while also making sure you hit the photo stops. You'll walk away with an insider's perspective and some great pictures.
On Plus trips, you will be in a room with one other traveler unless a single room upgrade is purchased. Roommates are assigned randomly based on gender unless a specific roommate is requested in advance. You can do this at the time of booking or in your online account up to 60 days before departure.
Note:Â During your stay in Hakone, you'll have the opportunity to stay in a traditional Ryokan-style temple. Due to the sleeping limitations in the temples, no single room upgrades can be accommodated for this overnight.Â
Japan is considered safe for travelers, but like any destination, it's important to stay aware of your surroundings and follow basic safety guidelines. Pickpocketing can occur, especially in crowded areas or tourist hotspots. Keep your belongings secure and be cautious with strangers offering unsolicited help or deals. Â
Here are a few additional points:
- Health and Safety: Talking with your healthcare provider about any vaccinations or medication you may want to consider. Here are some additional tips for traveling with medication and traveling with allergies.
- International Data Plan: In the event you need to get in touch with your Tour Director or Ultimate Break while abroad, it’s important to invest in an international data plan. Call your cell phone provider to understand their plans or look into purchasing a sim card.
- Transportation Safety: Japan's public transit system is incredibly efficient and reliable, though often very crowded. Keep your belongings close and stay alert. At the end of a night out, use trusted transportation like a licensed taxi, Uber of Uber like service, and always have cash on hand.
You can learn more about our safety commitment here.
Ultimate Break trips are a welcome environment for all. While we work hard to cultivate an inclusive environment in our groups, we recognize some people may have additional reservations based on their identity that they need to consider while traveling. Check out some resources on our identity and international travel page and reach out if you have any questions.
Hiking experience? Check. Keeping up an active lifestyle while traveling? Check. These trips are physically demanding. You should be comfortable hiking and walking long distances each day, at high inclines and altitudes. On these tours, be prepared to:
- Walk well over 20k steps a day (more if you add excursions)
- Use public transportation
- Climb on and off a motor coach or vehicle unassisted
- Manage your own luggage (including carrying luggage upstairs if no elevator)
- Climb tall sets of stairs often, sometimes without a handrail
- Stand for extended periods of time during guided commentary and photo stops
- Be comfortable hiking for long periods of time on varying terrain— expect difficult terrain like snowy hiking trails
Excursions are available for purchase at a discounted rate prior to departure. Some excursions may be available for purchase while you are on tour directly through your mobile app but are subject to availability and will be more expensive. Â
We recommend purchasing excursions at least 3 days prior to your tour departure. Please note some excursions have advance booking deadlines. Check your tour itinerary for more information to ensure you don’t miss the deadline to add them.
When you travel with Ultimate Break, you’ll make a positive impact on the places you visit and the people and animals you meet along the way. That’s because our three core Responsible Travel commitments—protecting the environment, supporting local communities, and promoting animal welfare—are at the heart of every tour we offer.
