Itinerary

Day 1: Overnight flight
Sit back, relax, and pass the time on your overnight flight to your Iceland eclipse adventure by attempting to pronounce vaðlaheiðarvegavinnuverkfærageymsluskúraútidyralyklakippuh-ringur, the longest word in Icelandic (ironically it means “key to the tool shed”—big word for such a small thing). Memorizing simple phrases like halló and takk will work, too.
Day 2: Arrive in Reykjavik + intro walk + Welcome Dinner
Welcome to Iceland, home to unreal landscapes, super fresh seafood, charming turf-roof houses, and really tiny horses (but don’t call them ponies—Icelanders are very serious about this). After landing, you'll meet your Tour Director and fellow travelers and head to Reykjavik, the northernmost capital city in the world. With a population of just around 130,000, nearly two-thirds of Iceland’s entire population lives here.
In the evening, enjoy your Welcome Dinner! Hosted by your Tour Director, this kickoff dinner is all about meeting your fellow travelers, swapping stories, and easing into the rest of the trip ahead.
- Arrive at the airport to meet your Tour Director and fellow travelers as they arrive.
- Transfer to your hotel to check into your accommodation.
- Get familiar with Reykjavik on an intro walk with your Tour Director through the Old Town Center where you’ll see iconic city sights like Hallgrim’s Church, the Leif Erikson statue, Tjörnin lake, Parliament House, City Hall, and the Old Harbour.
- Enjoy a Welcome Dinner with fellow travelers at an authentic local spot.
Hallgrímskirkja church tower: Visit the Hallgrímskirkja church observation tower for an unbelievable aerial view of Reykjavík and the surrounding mountains.
The Harpa: This striking glass concert hall with stunning views of the harbor blends modern architecture with Icelandic culture. The public areas are free to wander, but you’ll need a ticket for a performance.
Ask your TD:
- How Icelanders stay warm in the winter: Hint: it has everything to do with the island’s geothermal activity, and Iceland has one of the cleanest energy systems in the world.
- The sheep-to-people ratio: There are more than twice as many sheep as people who live on the island.
- How often volcanoes actually erupt: Kiiiind of often, considering Iceland is sitting on top of 30 different lava systems.
- What’s the deal with the tiny horses? No new horses have been imported since the 10th century, making these adorably fluffy horses a pure Viking breed.
- About the elves: About half of Icelanders believe in elves or at least won’t rule out their existence. Roads have even been rerouted to avoid disturbing their supposed homes.
- Why so many last names end in -son or -dóttir: Icelanders use patronymics, not surnames. So Jón’s son is Jónsson, and his daughter is Jónsdóttir; different last names even though they’re brother and sister.
- About the swimming pool culture: Hot springs here are part social hub, part spa. Every town has at least one geothermal pool, and it’s where locals relax and hang out in every kind of weather.
