Why go?

Mother Nature really did something special with Iceland. Waterfalls sparkle with mist and ice (and maybe hidden treasure), geysers erupt 30 feet in the air like clockwork, and black-sand beaches stretch down rugged coasts. Relax in steamy geothermal pools, watch the northern lights shimmer in the night sky, and get your fill of Viking lore. Can it get more magical? Two words: tiny horses.

Itinerary

Day 1: Overnight flight

Sit back, relax, and pass the time on your overnight flight to Iceland by attempting to pronounce vaðlaheiðarvegavinnuverkfærageymsluskúraútidyralyklakippuhringur, the longest word in Icelandic (ironically it means “key to the tool shed”—big word for such a small thing). Memorizing simple phrases like halló and takk will work, too.

Day 2: Arrive in Reykjavík + Welcome Dinner

Welcome to Iceland, aka Land of Fire and Ice (and Land Where Game of Thrones Was Filmed), where glaciers meet volcanoes and myths meet modern day. This tiny island nation is shaped by powerful forces of nature and a proud Viking heritage. You're in for a week of steaming hot springs, jaw-dropping celestial wonders, sparkling waterfalls, black-sand beaches, and some of the friendliest (and tallest) locals you’ll ever meet.

Today’s highlights
  • Meet your Tour Director and fellow travelers as they arrive at the airport.
  • Transfer to your hotel to check into your room.
  • Enjoy your Welcome Dinner! Hosted by your Tour Director, this kickoff dinner at a local spot is all about getting to know the others in your group and easing into the rest of the trip ahead.
Free time suggestions

Hallgrímskirkja church tower: Visit the Hallgrímskirkja church observation tower for an unbelievable aerial view of Reykjavík and the surrounding mountains.

Craft beer: For the best craft beer in the city, many brewed right in Iceland, look no further than Microbar and Skúli.

Icelandic hot dogs: Icelanders love hot dogs. Hit either Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur, or the simply named Hot Dog Stand, and get a lamb hot dog with everything: raw onions, fried onions, ketchup, sweet mustard, and a mayo remoulade sauce.

Travelers say

Travelers rave about Iceland's breathtaking landscapes, from stunning waterfalls to the mesmerizing Northern Lights, with many describing their experience as "magical" and "otherworldly." The tour offers a perfect blend of guided excursions to natural wonders and free time to explore Reykjavík, though some travelers noted disappointment when the Blue Lagoon visit was changed to the Secret Lagoon due to volcanic activity. Despite the short duration of the trip leaving some wishing for more time to explore, the majority of travelers were impressed by knowledgeable tour directors and felt the winter escape provided an unforgettable glimpse into the Land of Fire and Ice.

When I booked this tour they advertised it that it went to the blue lagoon. They changed it to the secret lagoon due to safety reasons because of the volcanic eruptions. That is an understandable change but there is a significant price difference between the two. The secret...

Iceland Northern Lights Trip 2025

1st-time traveler Anonymous, traveled in Oct 2025

With this being my first international trip and first EF trip I was impressed with the overall experience. The only disappointment that I had was EF had to change the Blue Lagoon to the Secret Lagoon. While I understood why they changed it due to the volcanic activity, it would...

I had an incredible time in Iceland! The country was absolutely breathtaking and I could not have asked for a better trip experience. Highly recommend arriving a couple days early or staying a couple days extra after the tour to explore more of Reykjavik or do other excursions...

Such a fun trip! Had a blast and a great way to see highlights of Iceland! The only drawback is that it’s such a short trip, there are some places I would’ve liked a little bit more time to explore. So many things to see and so little time. Will definitely go back on my own at...

Once in a lifetime trip!

This tour was great! Went in early October, it was raining most of the time and pretty chilly. Our guide (Adam) was very knowledgeable and informative. Everything ran smoothly. I felt the tour was a bit short and everything was packed together, but Iceland is extremely expensive...

In my opinion, this was the absolute best time to visit Iceland! We were blessed with clear, sunny skies (definitely still windy FYI) and still had the chance to witness the Northern Lights multiple times!!! Our guide and the driver for the nighttime tour were fantastic. The...
