The cable cars that connect the city's hillside comunas, the Botero sculptures in the Plaza Botero, and the transformation story that underlies everything make Medellín one of the most interesting cities on the continent. Most travelers visit both — Cartagena for beauty and history, Medellín for energy and innovation.

Colombia is a rewarding destination that gets easier with a little preparation. Spanish is the language of Colombia, and outside of tourist areas and major hotels, English is not widely spoken — a basic grasp of Spanish or a translation app is genuinely useful. Colombia is compact enough that two weeks gives you a very comprehensive first trip. A typical itinerary might include three or four days in Cartagena (including a day trip to the Rosario Islands for snorkeling), three or four days in Medellín (including a day trip to Guatapé and the Piedra del Peñol), two or three days in the Coffee Region (Salento and the Valle de Cocora), and two or three days in Bogotá. Three weeks lets you add the Caribbean coast beyond Cartagena (Tayrona National Park, the Lost City trek), the Amazon basin, or the Llanos — Colombia's vast eastern plains. Domestic flights are affordable and make covering ground efficiently very practical — Cartagena to Medellín is a 45-minute flight, and Medellín to Bogotá is about an hour.

Colombian food is hearty, regional, and deeply tied to the country's geography and cultural heritage. The bandeja paisa — a platter of beans, rice, ground beef, chicharrón, fried egg, plantain, and avocado — is the national dish of the Antioquia region and a genuinely satisfying meal. Arepas (corn cakes) are eaten at every meal in various forms across the country. The coastal cuisine of Cartagena and the Caribbean coast is built around fresh seafood, coconut rice, and tropical fruits. Bogotá's food scene has evolved significantly in recent years, with a growing number of restaurants exploring Colombia's extraordinary biodiversity of ingredients — the country has more plant species than almost any other on earth. The coffee, grown in the mountains of the Coffee Region at altitude, is among the finest in the world. Street food — empanadas, obleas, chontaduro — is excellent and very affordable throughout the country.
