The Ring of Kerry: A Journey Through Ireland’s Most Scenic Route
Looking for an authentic, off-the-beaten path, Irish experience? Look no further than the Ring of Kerry.
The Ring of Kerry—doesn’t it have a nice ring to it? This iconic loop throughout the Iveragh Peninsula has sweeping coastal views, storybook villages, and misty mountains. The Ring of Kerry is a must for anyone visiting the Emerald Isle.
If your adventure begins in Killarney, you’ve already had a taste of its old-world charm. As you arrived, you may have spotted horse-drawn carriages, known locally as jaunting cars. These carriages offer a leisurely (and quite magical) tour through Killarney National Park, a 25,000-acre expanse of forest, lakes, and mountains that is as enchanting as it is photogenic.
If time allows while you are exploring inside of Killarney National Park, stop by Muckroos House. This stately Victorian mansion is surrounded by colorful gardens. The lawn in front of the manor is practically begging for a cartwheel. Frolicking is not only allowed here, it’s practically mandatory.
The Red Fox Inn, a traditional Irish pub and inn is the next pitstop you should make along your route. This historic inn has a pub in the front, gift shop in the back. The owner, John, has owned this charming pub since the 80s and welcomes tourists with open arms. Make sure to snag an Irish coffee while you’re there. The homemade cream is chef’s kiss.

Another crown jewel of the Ring is Torc Waterfall. When you walk up, you’ll see a lovely little waterfall. While this is a stunning photo op, don’t stop there. Venture a bit farther along the path to find the larger, more impressive waterfall tucked deeper in the woods. Towering trees line your way, adding to the fairytale atmosphere.
Depending on your itinerary, you might also have a chance to visit Ross Castle, perched on the edge of Lough Leane. If it’s not included on your tour, I’d highly recommend taking a stroll out to the Castle if staying in Killarney; it is worth it. You may even spot some wild deer along the way!
Something you will want to keep an eye out while exploring the Ring are the famed fairy trees. Typically Hawthorn trees, adorned with ribbons and tokens, these are said to be portals to the fairy world. Tread respectfully! Irish folklore claims these fairy trees are to be revered (unless you want to incur the wrath of the fairies).

Where to eat, sip, and shop (depending on where your accommodations are)
If you're staying in Sneem, this tiny town packs a delightful punch:
D O’Sheas Bar: A cozy pub known for excellent food and energetic live music.
Murphy’s Ice Cream: A legendary sweet spot with flavors you won’t forget (if you’re feeling adventurous, try the Brown Bread flavor).
Sneem Falls: Don’t miss this serene viewpoint from the bridge where River Sneem meets the mountains.
If Killarney is your base, you're in for some top-tier craic (Irish for fun):
- The Grand: The go-to for nightlife with live music and a late-night DJ.
- The Laurels: A classic Irish pub with hearty fare—don’t skip the shepherd’s pie.
- The Duck Shop: Looking for a quirky souvenir? This shop has you covered with gifts that are delightfully offbeat.
Whether you’re wandering castle grounds, dancing to live fiddles, or spotting fairy trees, the Ring of Kerry delivers a truly authentic Irish experience.
