Itinerary

Day 1: Overnight flight
Board your overnight flight to Italy—your gateway to unforgettable experiences and flavors. Get ready to indulge in the rich culinary delights of Italy: from perfectly crisp pizza and fresh pasta to creamy gelato, decadent cannoli, and a glass of limoncello. It’s so good it'll bring a tear to your eye when you go back to ordering soggy dining hall pizza.
Day 2: Arrive in Venice + Welcome Dinner
Welcome to Venice! Situated on 118 islands, intersected by 175 canals and spanned by more than 400 bridges, this city has had more praise showered upon it from travelers, writers and artists than any other city in the world.
In the evening, enjoy a Welcome Dinner of local cuisine and drinks with fellow travelers at an authentic local spot. Afterwards, you’re free to take the party elsewhere!
- Arrive at the airport—your Tour Director will be waiting to help you get settled and navigate the city. Then venture into Venice or explore the area around your accommodation.
- Venture into Venice proper or see the area surrounding your accommodation.
- Head to the classic spots like St Mark’s Square, or the Rialto bridge in the evening for no crowds, just magic.
- Learn about andar per bacari, the local past time of going from bacaro to bacaro (bacaro = wine bar) enjoying inexpensive local wines and prosecco, the company of friends and strangers while enjoying Venetian tapas, the cicchetti [chee-KEHT-tee].
Ask Your Tour Director
- For the perfect time and the perfect spot to help arrange a gondola ride (extra cost)
- If you can row a gondola? It's possible, thanks to a unique partnership with Row Venice (extra cost, see FAQ)
- About how to beat the lines and get inside St Mark’s basilica to look at 900 years of Venetian art and history (extra cost)
- To visit to colorful Burano for a picture perfect afternoon and lunch (extra cost)
- The times for the local markets, the most ramous, the Rialto Mercato, is right on the Grand Canal and is open six days per week
- When to go to the famed bookstore, Libreria Acqua Alta is just a few minutes walk from St Mark’s square and is beloved as a unique, chaotic spot in the heart of Venice (see Venice FAQ Section)
- Getting to one of the cities’ famed view points, like the campanile of San Giorgio Maggiore, whether you want the perfect photo of St Mark’s or the Grand Canal, we’ll point you to the spots to snag those iconic photos from Venice
- About the places to buy locally made souvenirs that support the community, local producers and the Veneto region
Day 3: Tour Venice
Today you’re officially in Venice—yes, that Venice. Kick things off by meeting your local guide in St. Mark’s Square, then cruise in by private boat because walking everywhere is overrated when canals exist. Stroll along the waterfront, snap pics of gondolas floating past dreamy buildings, and stop by the iconic Bridge of Sighs (sad name, unreal photo op).
You’ll wrap things up watching real-life glassblowers do their thing at a Murano glass workshop—basically turning molten lava-looking glass into art right in front of you. It’s kind of wild.
- Arrive in St Mark’s Square in style on a private boat, the square is home to numerous treasures like the Basilica di San Marco, the Doge’s Palace and Caffè Florian, one of the oldest and continuously operating cafes in the world.
- See several historic churches, like San Zulian and the Church of the Greeks and its leaning bell tower as you amble through picture-perfect piazzas with your local host and guide. Also en route is the famed spiral staircase, Scala Contarini del Bovolo, from the 15th century.
- On the way, we’ll provide snacks from one of Venice’s top local pasticerrias (pastries!) before ending for a brief glassblowing demonstration conducted by on the of cities’ master glass blowers at the Vecchia Murano glass factory (see Venice FAQ Section).
Day 4: Travel to Florence via Bologna
Time to head south—next stop, Florence, with a very important food break along the way. You’ll stop in Bologna, aka Italy’s unofficial food capital and the birthplace of pasta dishes you’ve definitely eaten before (looking at you, bolognese). Grab lunch, wander the streets, and soak it all in before continuing to Florence. Once you arrive, check into your hotel, take a quick walk around the neighborhood, and enjoy a free night to explore. Rooftop bars, gelato crawls, sunset views—your call.
- Break up your trip to Tuscany with a stop in the Emilia Romagna region for some lunch and time to explore.
- Check in to your accommodation, located Florence’s vibrant city center, and familiarize yourself with the area on a short walk with your Tour Director.
Ask Your Tour Director
- About how and when to visit Florence's iconic Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, nicknamed the Duomo
- About the perfect golden hour and sunset picnic spot in Florence
- For their favorite wine window—and the fascinating, often troubled, history behind these quirky Florentine features
- Where to enjoy an aperitivo with a view—Florence’s rooftop bars are truly iconic
- About an optional day trip to see Pisa’s famous Leaning Tower (seasonal and at additional cost)
- How and when to visit the Uffizi Gallery without the crowds
- Tips for visiting Michelangelo’s David at the Accademia—what to know before you go
- For some women-owned boutiques and beloved family-run restaurants in the heart of the city
- Where to find the best of the best vintage clothing and photo booths in Florence
Day 5: Tour Florence + optional hot air balloon ride over Tuscany + pasta making class & dinner
Today’s all about Florence—the city that somehow nails art, fashion, food, and vibes all at once. On your walking tour, you’ll hit the highlights plus a few under-the-radar spots, hear stories about iconic Italian brands that started here, and pick up tips like how not to order coffee like a tourist. You’ll end on a high note with gelato, because obviously. Feeling extra? You can float over Tuscany in a hot air balloon or learn how to make pasta from scratch and eat it for dinner. Casual.
- Begin your day at the historic Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella, then follow the story of how Florence’s distinct identity was shaped by artisans and visionaries—from Medici-sponsored workshops to the elegant storefronts of Via de’ Tornabuoni.
- As you move through vibrant piazzas and elegant streets, you’ll hear about influential figures like Guccio Gucci and Salvatore Ferragamo, while uncovering the traditions that continue to shape Florence’s global appeal. Take in the architecture, uncover quirky local details (like how to order coffee right), and browse artisan boutiques with deep roots in the city’s past.
- With a sweet finale at a beloved gelato shop, this tour offers a stylish, story-filled introduction to Florence’s timeless sense of self.
Day 6: Cinque Terre excursion or San Gimignano Wine Tasting
Lay your eyes on the most beautiful coastal scenery anywhere, Cinque Terre, while you discover mountainside villages and iconic colorful seaside buildings.
*Cinque Terre is a seasonal excursion for departures between 4/26-9/25. Departures outside these months will enjoy a wine tasting excursion in San Gimignano.
- Take an AM bus to Levanto for an hour-long boat ride with views of quaint oceanfront villages.
- Disembark at Manarola, famed for colorful buildings that dot the cliffs of its picturesque harbor.
- After some free time in Manarola, hop on another boat for more iconic views en route to Portovenere for additional exploring.
Day 7: Travel to Rome via Orvieto
On your way to Rome, you’ll stop in Orvieto—a tiny hill town with massive views. Ride up to the historic center, wander medieval streets, check out the jaw-dropping cathedral, and grab lunch with a glass of local white wine if that’s your vibe. Then it’s on to Rome, where things are about to get iconic.
- Take the funicular up to Orvieto, a picturesque hill town perched atop a dramatic cliff.
- Marvel at the golden mosaics and sculpted façade of the town’s cathedral.
- Take in panoramic views of the cypress-lined hills and olive groves of Umbria.
- Arrive at your new accommodations in Rome.
Day 8: Explore Rome + optional rooftop aperitivo
Welcome to Rome—what dreams are made of (thank you Lizzie). Today’s guided tour takes you through the must-sees: the Colosseum, Roman Forum, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps… all the hits. Afterwards, you can relax with an optional rooftop aperitivo, sip cocktails, take in the views, and maybe find your own Paolo.
- Enjoy a morning cappuccino or afternoon espresso at a café in a lively piazza.
- Experience the heart of ancient Rome with a visit to the Forum, once the center of political power, public life, and religious activity for over a thousand years.
- See the ruins of several Roman temples, including the Temple of the Vestal Virgins which houses Rome’s eternal flame. It is said that if the flame goes out, disaster will be brought on to Rome. Yikes!
- Sip Italian cocktails and snack on local bites as you unwind on a scenic rooftop in the heart of Rome.
Day 9: Free day in Rome + optional visit to the Vatican + Farewell Dinner
Mama mia, a whole day in Rome to do as you please! Explore some of your favorite places from the past few days, look for something new, or once again do as Lizzie McGuire would do and hop on the back of an Italian man’s vespa (kidding...kind of). And if none of that sounds appealing, join the Vatican City excursion and catch a glimpse of the most interesting cities you’ve ever seen.
In the evening, it’s time for your Farewell Dinner. Hosted by your Tour Director, this dinner is your chance to relive the best stories, the funniest inside jokes, and all the unforgettable moments you’ve shared with new friends.
- Explore the bustling streets and famous sights while enjoying a cone of gelato.
- Soak in the history by exploring ancient ruins.
Trevi Fountain: Rumor has it, if turn your back to the Trevi Fountain and toss a coin over your shoulder, it guarantees you’ll return to the Eternal City. Throw in a second coin, and you’ll not only come back, but also find love. Fine print: Significant other not guaranteed by EF Ultimate Break.
Shopping on Vide del Corso: Walk down the longest pedestrian street in the city for some prime shopping. Populated by both locals and tourists, there’s room for everyone on the narrow store-filled street.
Sunset at Piazza del Popolo: Experiences one of Rome's most famous squares at sunset is magical. For even more magic, climb the Pincio Terrace for panoramic views of the city.
Pantheon at night: Seeing the Pantheon after dark is a whole different experience. The square in front of it becomes much quieter and the building itself is beautifully illuminated.
Day 10: Fly home
Arrivederci, amici!
Translation: Goodbye, friends. Your next destination awaits—home. But this isn’t goodbye. It’s “See you later.” The only question is, where?

Note: 2025 is a Jubilee year in Rome as the Roman Catholic Church celebrates their 25 year celebration at the Vatican. While this is an exciting time, there will be many visitors in the Vatican. Read here for more information on what to expect while visiting during the Jubilee.
- Libreria Acqua Alta: Venice’s most photogenic bookstore, famous for its staircase made of old books, cozy reading nooks, and books stored in gondolas, bathtubs, and boats to protect them from flooding. Resident cats roam freely, adding to the charm of this quirky, Instagram-worthy literary treasure.
- Glass blowing at Vecchia Murano: Venetian glassblowing isn’t just a craft—it’s an art form passed down for generations. At Vecchia Murano, you’ll meet the Maestri, master glassblowers who have dedicated their lives to shaping molten glass into breathtaking works of art. With skill, precision, and a little bit of magic, they transform raw materials into delicate vases, intricate sculptures, and shimmering jewelry. Watching them work is like stepping into history—an ancient tradition still alive today, in the hands of true artisans.
- Rosa Salva: We’re all about teaming up with locals to bring you the most authentic (and delicious) experiences. That’s why we grab fresh pastries from Rosa Salva, a legendary, family-run Venetian bakery that’s been serving up the good stuff since 1870. Passed down through six generations, the Rosa Salva family continues to craft traditional Venetian treats with the same passion and quality that made them famous. Whether it’s a flaky croissant or a perfect sfogliatella, every bite is a taste of real Venice.
- St. Mark's Basilica is always worth a visit but requires planning to navigate when to go as there are often long lines. Entry costs 3 Euro. Inside there are several additional entrances that are extra, such as the balcony and the treasury.
- The Campanile at St Mark's is also an incredible viewpoint, there is an elevator to the top and their are options to skip the the line. Chat with your Tour Director about how best to plan your visit.
Row Venice
Beginning in 2025, EF Ultimate Break is partnering with Row Venice to give travelers a firsthand experience of cultura acquea—Venice’s unique water-based heritage. Row Venice is a non-profit organization led by passionate, expert women vogatrici—Venetian rowers who preserve and promote the tradition of voga alla veneta, the standing, forward-facing rowing style made iconic by gondoliers. Many of the women are athletes and regatta competitors, and they’re devoted to keeping this centuries-old sport alive.

If you are interested in visiting any of Florence’s many museums during your free time, we recommend that you make reservations in advance. See uffizi.org for the Uffizi Gallery or accademia.org for the Accademia Gallery. Please note that the museums are closed on Mondays.
Florence's Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore (the Duomo) requires some planning as it is a very busy attraction. The cathedral is free but visiting the other points of interest require purchasing a pass from the ticket office or reserving online in Advance. Check with your Tour Director about timings and how to plan to your ideal visit.
- Colosseum & Roman Forum: Take note if your tour itinerary includes an entrance to the Colosseum. If included, you will also have a 24-hour ticket for visiting the nearby Roman Forum independently. If the Colosseum entrance is not included in your itinerary, booking it yourself is easy and your Tour Director can advise you on the best time to visit.
- Trastevere: Trastevere is one of Rome’s most enchanting neighborhoods, where ivy-covered buildings, cobbled streets, and glowing lanterns create a romantic, old-world atmosphere. By day it’s full of charm and hidden corners; by night, it transforms into a lively maze of wine bars, trattorias, and street musicians you’ll never want to leave.
- Trevi Fountain: The Trevi Fountain feels like stepping into a dream — a masterpiece of marble and water where every detail is more dramatic than the last. Tossing a coin into its turquoise pool isn’t just tradition; it’s a promise to return to Rome.
- Beach day trips: If you’re ready to get out of the city there are several beaches you can reach via. Public transit from Rome. We recommend Anzio for it’s long sandy beaches, Santa Marinella (a favorite with the locals), or Lido di Ostia (the closest beach to the city).

- Manage your own luggage (including carrying luggage upstairs if no elevator)

Optional Visit to the Vatican in 2025: The main Holy Door is located inside St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City, where many spiritual events will take place during the Jubilee. As a result, tour groups won’t be permitted at certain times, and tickets are expected to sell out quickly with reduced capacity. Because of this, we’ll need to cancel or move the Optional Visit to the Vatican on select departures in 2025. If your departure is affected by the cancellation of the Optional Visit to the Vatican in 2025, you may have the option to participate in the Optional Civita & Bolsena Lake day trip instead.
When you travel with Ultimate Break, you’ll make a positive impact on the places you visit and the people and animals you meet along the way. That’s because our three core Responsible Travel commitments—protecting the environment, supporting local communities, and promoting animal welfare—are at the heart of every tour we offer.

If you're itching to travel a tad longer and want to experience another destination (or even country) during your tour, consider adding your tour's extension. Some tours offer a tour extension giving you a few more days to explore with your Tour Director and other tour members.
We suggest adding the tour extension when booking your tour. If you've already made your reservation and would like to add the extension, we'll do our best to make it happen. The sooner you let us know, the better, so we can adjust your flight dates and airport gateways as needed.
