Itinerary

Day 1: Overnight flight
Hop on your overnight flight to Switzerland and try to get as sleep as much as possible (easier said than done when you’re on a plane and buzzing with excitement for the trip ahead). You’re in for an unforgettable hiking adventure.
Day 2: Arrive in Lausanne + Welcome Dinner
Sitting on the northern shore of the largest lake in Western Europe, Lake Geneva, Lausanne is Switzerland’s fourth largest city with views of the water and surrounding mountains that will leave you speechless. If you look across the lake, you’ll see France, because fun fact, the border between Switzerland and France actually runs right down the middle of Lake Geneva. You’ll have some free time in the afternoon to explore the city and hang out on the lakeshore.
In the evening, enjoy your Welcome Dinner! Hosted by your Tour Director, this kickoff dinner is all about meeting your fellow travelers and easing into the rest of the trip ahead.
- Arrive at the airport to meet your fellow travelers and your Tour Director.
- Transfer to your accommodations and check in.
- Head out into the Swiss evening for the first group dinner of your trip.
Day 3: Half-day excursion to Lavaux Vineyard Terraces via Saint-Saphorin
Vineyards are great. Walks through Swiss vineyards that overlook Lake Geneva are even better. Today will be your first adventure—and it’s a relatively easy one to get the week started. More of a long walk along a paved path than a proper hike, you’ll start in the village of Saint-Saphorin and head to the Lavaux Vineyard Terraces, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that dates back to the 11th century, for a wine tasting.
Hike stats:
Difficulty: Easy
Distance: 6.5-7 miles
Elevation: 1,700 feet
Please note: All outdoor and hiking activities may be adjusted on tour due to local conditions, such as weather or trail closures.
- Start your hike in rustic Saint-Saphorin, a tiny medieval village known for its charming narrow alleyways and winegrowers’ homes.
- Continue gently upward into and through the Lavaux Vineyard Terraces, a beautiful 18-mile stretch of vines that produce some of the best wine in Switzerland thanks to a perfect hillside microclimate and the sunlight reflected off Lake Geneva.
- Stop for an included wine tasting with killer views of the lake and mountains (can all hikes have this on the trail?). Lavaux is particularly known for its long tradition of cultivating white Chasselas grapes that produce crisp, easy-drinking wine with notes of pear and citrus.
- End in Lutry, another cute lakeside town, for some free time to pair more Swiss wine with local cheese, rosti, or lake fish. Taking a dip in the fresh water of Lake Geneva is also always a good idea.
Ouchy Promenade: Stroll along Lake Geneva just like the locals do at this scenic waterfront promenade lined with restaurants, cafes, and sailboats.
Olympic Museum: Get sporty at this interactive museum dedicated to the Olympic games—the only museum of its kind in the whole world, believe it or not.
Lausanne Cathedral: Admire the soaring arches, vibrant rose windows, and stunning lake views of this iconic Gothic landmark high above the city.
Ask your Tour Director
- What are the “three suns” of Lavaux?
- Why is Lake Geneva sometimes called Lac Léman?
- How do mountains and environmental laws keep the water so clear?
- Where are the best places to swim around the lake (there are a lot of them!)?
- How do winemakers gather the grapes on such steep terraced slopes?
- Which grapes other than Chasselas do the vineyards grow?
Day 4: Hike Montreux + travel to Zermatt region
Today you’re in for another beautiful (and super chill) walk before ramping things up in Zermatt. Continue around Lake Geneva to Montreux, a town that has one of the most stunning lake walks in the world as well as one of the most famous jazz festivals. Stroll through the town, followed by an easy hike to Rochers-de-Nayes for more epic views of the lake down below and the Swiss and French Alps above.
Hike stats:
Difficulty: Easy
Distance: 5 miles
Elevation: 7,000ft
Please note: All outdoor and hiking activities may be adjusted on tour due to local conditions, such as weather or trail closures.
- Set out from Montreux for a hike around the surrounding mountainside.
- Reach the summit of Rochers-de-Naye and enjoy sprawling views of the lake below.
- Listen for the bells of the thousands of cows in the area, who wear them around their necks so farmers can find them in the fog.
- Wave goodbye to big, beautiful Lake Geneva, and make your way to the Zermatt region for more mountain views and charming Alpine culture, plus adorable goats (just wait, you’ll see).
Day 5: Half-day excursion to Black Lake + hike the Matterhorn
Feels like the perfect morning to start your Matterhorn day hike. Hop in your gondola in Zermatt and gaze up at the mountain’s almost symmetrical natural pyramid that stands 14,692 feet tall. From the gondola station and Black Lake, you’ll have the chance to hike to the Hörnlihütte at 10,695 feet above sea level. Matterhorn climbers use the Hörnlihütte as a final staging point for their ascent to the summit. You’ll hike 3 miles almost entirely uphill before returning the same way.
Hike stats:
Difficulty: Medium
Distance: 6 miles
Elevation: 10,700ft
Please note: All outdoor and hiking activities may be adjusted on tour due to local conditions, such as weather or trail closures.
- Hop on a gondola (the mountain kind, not the Venice kind) and head 8,373 feet above sea level to the Schwarzsee (“black lake”), named after its very dark, often black-looking, surface. There are several black lakes in Switzerland, but this is the most famous.
- See the small lakeside chapel dedicated to Maria zum Schnee (Our Lady of the Snows), where Matterhorn climbers often visit after summiting.
- Continue upwards, over fairly steep terrain, to the Matterhorn basecamp, Hörnlihütte. If you’re not into this more demanding hike, hang out by the Black Lake or head back to Zermatt.
- Grab a high-altitude lunch at Hornlihutte on your own before hiking back down to where you started in Zermatt (or ride the gondola, no judgement!).
Valais goat parade: Watch as Zermatt’s famous black and white Valais goats clip-clop through the village between pastures twice a day. It’s a quirky alpine tradition you can’t miss.
Mürini Hill viewpoint: Take this steep but short path from the center of Zermatt to the top of Mürini Hill for a birds-eye view of the village and the Matterhorn.
Day 6: Travel to Italy via Martigny + Saint-Vincent village walking tour
Yesterday was intense, but you hiked to one of the world’s most iconic spots! And if you didn’t, at least you saw the Valais goats, which is arguably just as exciting. Rest your legs today on the journey to the Aosta Valley region in northwestern Italy, on the border of Switzerland and France. It’s a nature lover’s paradise, with hiking opportunities galore. But you can’t leave Switzerland without learning about their fluffiest citizens at the St. Bernard Museum.
- On the way to Italy, stop at the St. Bernard Museum in Martigny to meet the legendary rescue dogs of the Alps. Learn how these heroic dogs, famous for saving travelers from snow and avalanches, trained at the hospice, and explore exhibits on their history, breeding, and Alpine rescue techniques.
- Cross the border from Switzerland to Italy—country number two!
- Walk through the peaceful town of Saint-Vincent with your Tour Director, passing ancient ruins, thermal baths, and a striking 11th-century Romanesque church.
Day 7: Full-day Aosta Valley hike
The Aosta region is a wildly beautiful and protected setting, teeming with ibex, marmots, and golden eagles. Today you’re in for a challenging 6-mile hike up steep terrain, but the views will be well worth it—Aosta Valley hiking is what outdoor adventure dreams are made of. It’ll be another unforgettable day, this time under the Italian sky.
Hike stats:
Difficulty: Difficult
Distance: 6+ miles
Please note: All outdoor and hiking activities may be adjusted on tour due to local conditions, such as weather or trail closures.
- Stretch your legs and warm up for a rewarding day of hiking in Italy.
- Keep your eyes peeled for alpine ibex, marmots, golden eagles, and wildflowers as you climb trails around Gran Paradiso National Park.
- Stop to rest at serene mountain lakes that reflect the surrounding snow-capped peaks.
- Head back for a free evening to relax, sip local wine like Blanc de Morgex or Petit Rouge, and carb back up with hearty Alpine cuisine that blends Italian and French influences.
Day 8: Travel to France + optional white-water rafting
Next up: France. Chamonix, nestled in the French Alps, became a mountaineering center in the 1700s after two local Frenchmen summited Mont Blanc for the first time in 1786, hosted the first winter Olympics in 1924, and now it’s a hub for outdoor activities from hiking to skiing. After you arrive, you can relax and explore the area before your last hike tomorrow or keep that heart rate elevated on a white-water rafting excursion.
- Travel from Italy to France, crossing a third country off your list.
- Take in views of Mont Blanc, the tallest peak in the Alps.
Alpine Museum: Learn about the stories behind Mont Blanc’s first mountaineers and their daring 18th- and 19th-century climbs.
Mer de Glace glacier: Take the Montenvers train to France’s largest glacier to wander ice caves, see crevasses and frozen waterfalls, and get sweeping views from the glacier’s edge.
Ask your Tour Director
- Is it true that the summit elevation of Mont Blanc actually changes?
- Is the Mer de Glace glacier shrinking?
- What’s up with all the paragliders?
- Why are some mountains jagged and others rounded?
- Do the mountains have different names in French, Italian, and German?
- Has Chamonix always been famous for skiing?
- What wildlife should we look out for?
Day 9: Half-day Aiguilles Rouges hike + Farewell Dinner
Wait, last day and hike of the trip? How did that happen? Oh right, you were busy testing your limits in three different countries on a diet of chocolate and cheese. Today you’ll spend the morning and afternoon high in the Aiguilles Rouges, or Red Peaks, where you’ll go up and down in elevation across some pretty uneven terrain, including a couple of boulder fields.
In the evening, it’s time for your Farewell Dinner to relive the best stories, the funniest inside jokes, and all the unforgettable moments you’ve shared.
Hike stats:
Difficulty: Medium
Distance: 6-6.5 miles
Elevation: 7,500ft
Please note: All outdoor and hiking activities may be adjusted on tour due to local conditions, such as weather or trail closures.
- Join a local hiking guide for a half-day hike to Lake Brevent on the southern slopes of the Aiguilles for gorgeous views of Mont Blanc and the Chamonix valley.
- Stop by the Aiguilles Rouges Nature Reserve, where, if you’re lucky (and quiet), you can see groundhogs, wild goats, and plenty of birds.
- Head back down to Chamonix and get ready for the last meal of your trip.
Day 10: Fly home
Au revoir, les amis!
Translation: Goodbye, friends! Your next destination awaits—home. But this isn’t goodbye. It’s “See you later.” The only question is, where?

FAQ
The Alps are calling, book the trip! We recommend booking as soon as possible, this not only secures your spot on the trip, it also allows you the most time to pay for your trip. The closer we get to departure the more challenging securing your reservation becomes.
Visa Requirement:
U.S. and Canadian citizens can enter Germany, Italy, and Switzerland without a visa for tourism purposes and stay for up to 90 days. If you are not a U.S. or Canadian citizen, you must contact your country’s consulate for your specific entry requirements.
Passport Validity:
We recommend that your passport is valid at least 6 months beyond the date you return home. For specific passport validity rules, you can refer to the US department of State, Government of Canada, or Countries consulate website.
Venice Tourism Tax: The city of Venice requires that all travelers must pay a fee/tax for entering the city unless their accommodations are within the municipality of Venice. All Ultimate Break accommodations are within the municipality, so you do not need to pay the tax. You MUST, however, complete a form confirming that you are staying within the city and download a QR code. If you do not have this QR code, authorities may fine you.
Get ready to hike through some of the most jaw-dropping landscapes Europe has to offer. This trip takes you deep into the heart of the Alps, with stops in adventure-packed destinations like Chamonix, Zermatt, and Aosta. You’ll trek past glacier-fed lakes, climb scenic ridgelines, and ride the legendary Aiguille du Midi cable car for unreal views of Mont Blanc. It’s all about earning your views and living that mountain life.
But it’s not just about the trails—this tour brings you into the vibe of alpine culture. Think cozy village strolls, lakeside hangs, and group dinners that turn into lifelong friendships. Whether you're chasing peaks or chilling in storybook towns, this is the kind of trip that leaves you feeling accomplished, connected, and totally inspired.
- Libreria Acqua Alta: Venice’s most photogenic bookstore, famous for its staircase made of old books, cozy reading nooks, and books stored in gondolas, bathtubs, and boats to protect them from flooding. Resident cats roam freely, adding to the charm of this quirky, Instagram-worthy literary treasure.
- Glass blowing at Vecchia Murano: Venetian glassblowing isn’t just a craft—it’s an art form passed down for generations. At Vecchia Murano, you’ll meet the Maestri, master glassblowers who have dedicated their lives to shaping molten glass into breathtaking works of art. With skill, precision, and a little bit of magic, they transform raw materials into delicate vases, intricate sculptures, and shimmering jewelry. Watching them work is like stepping into history—an ancient tradition still alive today, in the hands of true artisans.
- Rosa Salva: We’re all about teaming up with locals to bring you the most authentic (and delicious) experiences. That’s why we grab fresh pastries from Rosa Salva, a legendary, family-run Venetian bakery that’s been serving up the good stuff since 1870. Passed down through six generations, the Rosa Salva family continues to craft traditional Venetian treats with the same passion and quality that made them famous. Whether it’s a flaky croissant or a perfect sfogliatella, every bite is a taste of real Venice.
- St. Mark's Basilica is always worth a visit but requires planning to navigate when to go as there are often long lines. Entry costs 3 Euro. Inside there are several additional entrances that are extra, such as the balcony and the treasury.
- The Campanile at St Mark's is also an incredible viewpoint, there is an elevator to the top and their are options to skip the the line. Chat with your Tour Director about how best to plan your visit.
