Note that this information will default to US passport holders. If you hold a passport from outside the US, please make sure to consult your country's immigration and travel site to determine the best documentation needed for your travels.

Oktoberfest is the world’s largest Volksfest (people’s festival) held annually from late September - October. Millions of people flock to this event every year, and for good reason! Locally referred to as the wiesn (fairgrounds, Theresa’s meadows), it’s a staple of Bavarian culture, taking place since 1810. Read on for tips and know-how’s of this Bavarian bash, so you can make the most of your celebration!

• “Wiesn”: If you really want to be a local, call it the wiesn*. Wiesn translates to meadow, and this festival takes place on a giant meadow - the Theresienwiese!
• Be nice to the bartenders: Not only are they extremely fast and efficient, but if you’re at a table you’ll order from a waiter or waitress. Be nice, and know that if you tip, you’ll get even faster service.
• Don’t touch: Follow up to our point above… Please don’t touch the waiters or waitresses. Out of respect, but also know that their jobs and tensions are very high!
• Pace yourself: Beer at Oktoberfest typically comes from Munich’s six breweries: Augustiner, Hacker-Pschorr, Hofbräu München, Löwenbräu, Paulaner and Spaten-Franziskaner. They’re all brewed at 6% and a bit stronger than you’d imagine. Don’t be that guy/girl.
• Share the space: The tables in Oktoberfest tents are communal, so don’t be surprised or hesitant when others join you for the fun!
• It’s not cheap: One mass of beer costs approximately $11. If it helps… they’re huge.
• Dress the part: If you don’t wear a lederhosen or dirndl, you’ll stick out like a sore thumb. Lucky for you, there are plenty of places to buy these abroad! Just avoid sequins, neon, or above-the-knee garb - these are frowned upon by locals.
• Try the food: Bratwurst, pretzels, spaetzle, pie, balance out your beer with some of the delicious local food!
• Prost! When you cheers, or prost, clink your glasses at the bottom, say “PROST!”, and make eye contact!
• Have fun: It’s a once-in-a-life-time experience, after all!

Not necessarily! While most people on this trip will be between 25-35, these trips are designed – from pacing and destinations to accommodations and activities – for the either age you are or the age you feel. Age is just a number, after all.

Groups can vary in size (often between 20–44 travelers) but are guaranteed to leave you with memorable and long lasting travel companions. Whether you’re sharing laughs over a great meal at a local restaurant, or dropping your jaws off the edge of a hot air balloon, there’s sure to be an energetic and supportive group atmosphere for whatever you’re looking for. Flight details are released for preview 60 days before departure and your e-ticket and confirmation number will be available 30 days before you depart.

During your trip, you’ll stay at hotels handpicked by our team of local experts. Each property is centrally located, so the sights, shops, restaurants, and nightlife you came to experience are right outside your door. Rooms are exclusively for EF Ultimate Break travelers.

Twin room: each traveler gets their own bed
Choose this option if you're traveling with someone and you want separate beds. Or, if you're traveling alone, you'll be paired with a roommate on tour.

Double room: share a bed with your travel companion
Choose this option if you're traveling with someone and you'd like to share a bed.

Private room: upgrade to your own space
Great for solo travelers who want to room by themselves.

Your Tour Director is with you during your entire trip. They’re part logistics master, making sure you get to see all that we have planned; part rockstar, sharing with you local hotspots; and part guru, sharing and inviting you into the culture. Our Tour Directors are fully trained and ready to support you in making your journey safe, seamless, and unforgettable!

In some locations you will be met by a local guide who will lead you through our traveler-inspired walking tour. You’ll get some local history and culture while also making sure you hit the photo stops. You’ll walk away with an insider’s perspective and some great pictures.

We recommend budgeting $80-$100 per day to cover tipping, food, and shopping. You know your spending habits best, if you want to do it all budget on the higher end.  

On this trip you'll use the Euro. We strongly advise that you take debit and credit cards (ideally with a chip), which can be used to withdraw cash at local banks as needed. Make sure to check with your bank or credit card company about withdrawal fees and/or foreign exchange fees. While better rates of exchange are usually available overseas, ordering currency from your local bank may be an option.

Excursions are available for purchase at a discounted rate prior to departure. Some excursions may be available for purchase while you are on tour directly through your mobile app but are subject to availability and will be more expensive.  

We recommend purchasing excursions at least 3 days prior to your tour departure. Please note some excursions have advance booking deadlines. Check your tour itinerary for more information to ensure you don’t miss the deadline to add them.

We categorize this trip as a low activity level. This means you’re ready to choose your own adventure. You may spend more time on a bus or vehicle but there will be some walking and activities as well. There’s also some free time for you to enjoy at your own pace. On these tours, be prepared to:

• Walk a minimum of 7,500k steps per day (more if you add excursions)
• Use public transportation
• Climb on and off a motor coach or vehicle unassisted
• Manage your own luggage (including carrying luggage upstairs if no elevator)
• Climb occasional stairs, hills and navigate various terrains (think cobblestones) to different sites
• Stand for periods of time during guided commentary and photo stops

While our destinations are safe, it’s always important to stay aware of your surroundings and follow basic safety guidelines. Pickpocketing can occur, especially in crowded areas or tourist hotspots. Keep your belongings secure and be cautious with strangers offering unsolicited help or deals.  

Here are a few additional points:

• Health and safety: Talking with your healthcare provider about any vaccinations or medication you may want to consider. Here are some additional tips for traveling with medication and traveling with allergies.
• International data plan: In the event you need to get in touch with your Tour Director or Ultimate Break while abroad, it’s important to invest in an international data plan. Call your cell phone provider to understand their plans or look into purchasing a sim card.
• Transportation safety: Keep your belongings close and stay alert. At the end of a night out, use trusted transportation like a licensed taxi, Uber of Uber like service, and always have cash on hand.
