Itinerary

Day 1: Overnight Flight
Board your overnight flight, bound for Lisbon! You’re headed to The City of Seven Hills, which are historically inaccurate and miscounted. Let us know how many you find.
Day 2: Arrival in Lisbon + Welcome Dinner
Welcome to Lisbon, the City of Seven Hills. Rising up from the banks of the Tagus River, Portugal’s colorful capital blends old-world charm with chill coastal energy. It’s one of Europe’s sunniest cities (about 300 days a year), home to winding streets paved in stone, tile-covered buildings, iconic yellow trams, and enough pastries to fuel your whole trip.
In the evening, enjoy your Welcome Dinner! Hosted by your Tour Director, this kickoff dinner is all about getting to know the others in your group and easing into the rest of the trip ahead.
- Arrive at the airport to meet your Tour Director and fellow travelers as they arrive.
- Transfer to your hotel to check into your accommodation.
- Head out into the night for a Welcome Dinner with your group at an authentic local spot.
Day 3: Sightseeing in Lisbon
Rome usually gets all the glory when it comes to ancient history, but Portugal’s capital is even older than the Eternal City. Lisbon started as a humble fishing village before it exploded into a global maritime superpower in the 1500s, and its salty history is still very rooted in the present. Today you’ll go beyond the typical touristy spots and explore some of Lisbon’s oldest neighborhoods and landmarks with a local guide.
- Wander Alfama, Lisbon’s oldest neighborhood, shaped by the Romans and Moors way before it became a hub for fishermen and traders. Its narrow streets, colorful tiles, and hidden squares reflect centuries of history, but you can also find trendy restaurants, artisan shops, and cafes (Alfama Doce on Rua da Regueira has really good coffee).
- Stroll the courtyards and ramparts of Castelo de São Jorge, a fortress that’s guarded Lisbon since the 11th century. Spot colorful peacocks roaming freely around the grounds and take in sweeping views of red rooftops and the Tagus River.
- Try a pastel de nata! These flaky, custardy pastries are something of a national icon in Portugal, and they’re so, so, so good with coffee. The most iconic places to try them are Pastéis de Belém and Manteigaria, but most bakeries also have them.
Praça do Comércio: This huge square, framed by sunny yellow buildings, was once the city’s royal center, now buzzing with restaurants and boasting views of the Tagus River.
LX Factory: Explore street art, quirky shops, cafés, and restaurants in a lively, artsy atmosphere set in a former industrial complex.
Bifanas: Stop at Bifanas do Afonso or O Trevo (visited by Anthony Bourdain) for a bifana, a soft roll piled with juicy, marinated pork. Make sure to add piri piri hot sauce!
Day 4: Free day or optional Sintra & Portuguese Riviera day trip
It's your free day in Portugal to cross any items off your bucket list. Hunt for souvenirs, squeeze in another tour, church, tram ride, or pastel de nata, or get to know another unique neighborhood. If you want to head outside the city, an optional excursion to the mountains and the coast is calling.
Elevador de Santa Justa: Originally steam-powered, this outdoor elevator is the handiwork of Gustave Eiffel’s apprentice (so it might look a little familiar). A ride up gives you awesome views of the city skyline (but you can also use the stairs if there’s a line).
Bairro Alto nightlife: Nightlife in Bairro Alto centers around small, intimate bars, where the crowds spill into the streets. It’s super lively and a great area to spend an evening.
National Tile Museum: A quick bus will take you to this must-see museum that showcases Portugal’s iconic azulejo tiles, from 15th-century masterpieces to modern designs.
Day 5: Travel to Madrid
Say "tchau" to Portugal and "hola" to neighboring Spain—you're headed to Madrid, the capital that knows how to balance tradition, art, and nightlife like a pro. This city is full of grand boulevards, royal palaces, tapas bars that stay open past your bedtime, and energy that turns up as the sun goes down (and somehow keeps going until it comes back up again).
- Hop on your flight from Lisbon to Madrid.
- Arrive in Madrid and check out your accommodation.
- Take a brief orientation walk with your Tour Director to familiarize yourself with the area.
Shopping: Head to the trendy neighborhoods of Chueca and Malasaña, known for street art (keep an eye out for Banksy and local artists), vintage clothing stores, LGBTQ+ friendly nightlife, and affordable tapas bars that feel like hidden gems.
Madrid’s Golden Triangle of Art: The Prado (home to classics by Goya, Velázquez, and El Greco), Thyssen-Bornemisza (a greatest-hits collection spanning centuries), and Reina Sofía (hello, Picasso’s Guernica)—are all within walking distance of each other.
Day 6: Sightseeing Tour of Madrid + optional Street Art Tour & Picnic
A nearly endless amount of tapas, sangria, and Spanish Golden Age architecture will greet you in this city located at the very center of Spain. Discover many of the most popular destinations before getting cultured at one of the world’s leading art museums. And remember, there’s always room for more tapas.
- Journey to the very heart of Madrid at the Puerta del Sol, aka the “Gate of the Sun.”
- Shop, walk, and enjoy the outdoors and a bronze statue of King Phillip III at Plaza Mayor (Main Square).
- Check out the Picassos and Dalís at the Reina Sofia, or see the works of the old Rennaisance masters at the Prado.
El Retiro Park: Once belonging to the Spanish Monarchy, this now public park contains a variety of statues and museums, the famed Rosaleda rose garden, the Palacio de Cristal, and Retiro Pond—a great spot for watching people and street performers alike.
Malasaña: This happening area is known for a large student population and streets filled with coffee shops, bakeries, and vintage clothing stores. Then at night, edgy dance and rock clubs come to life so you can dance the night away.
Day 7: Free day + optional medieval Toledo
Today is your chance to design the Madrid you want—sleep in and café-hop your way through the city, soak up history at the Royal Palace, hunt down churros con chocolate, or join an optional excursion to Toledo, the ancient hilltop city that looks like it’s been plucked straight from a storybook.
Plaza de Santa Ana: Start the night like the locals do in Plaza de Santa Ana, a lively square full of bars serving cold cañas (beers) and mouthwatering tapas. It’s a favorite pre-going-out spot for madrileños—aka the perfect warmup before the night escalates.
Estadio Santiago Bernabéu: Visit Estadio Santiago Bernabéu, home of Real Madrid—one of the world’s most iconic fútbol teams. Tour the stadium, sit in the players’ seats, stroll through the trophy room, and imagine scoring a game-winner in front of 80,000 roaring fans.
Day 8: Travel to Barcelona + optional tapas tour
This morning, you’ll hop a train to Barcelona, the vibrant seaside capital of Catalonia known for its wild Gaudí architecture, Mediterranean beaches, buzzing nightlife, and food that hits different. Barcelona doesn’t believe in boring—from colorful markets to gothic alleyways to clubs that turn into sunrise, this city knows how to impress.
- Travel by train from Madrid to Barcelona.
- Take an introductory walk of Barcelona with your Tour Director.
- Stroll Las Ramblas, the lively pedestrian boulevard where street performers, cafés, flower stalls, and souvenir shops all compete for your attention—go with the flow and enjoy the chaos.
- Stop in Plaça de Catalunya, the central square that literally bridges the old Gothic Quarter with the modern Eixample district.
- Enjoy the rest of your evening exploring—whether that means beachfront cocktails, shopping in El Born, or joining the optional Tapas Tour to feast your way through local spots.
Day 9: Tour Barcelona + experience the Total Solar Eclipse in Tarragona
This is a day you’ll remember for the rest of your life. In the morning, connect with a local guide to discover Barcelona’s most well-known sites. Discover La Sagrada Familia, a Guadí-designed cathedral that has been under construction since 1882, visit Parc Güell, ornamented with thousands of colorful tiles, and walk Las Ramblas, shopping market stalls along the way. Then, it’s eclipse time.
Head south along the coast to Tarragona, the former Roman capital of Spain. Sitting directly in the path of totality, Tarragona is one of the best places on Earth to witness this rare phenomenon. As the moon passes in front of the sun, day will briefly turn into night, and you’ll experience the sun’s fiery outer atmosphere with your own eyes—well, with special eclipse sunglasses.
- Visit one of Antoni Gaudí's greatest work of modernist art, Park Güell. This colorful park is adorned with tilework, dreamlike structures and not a straight line in sight.
- Snack your way through La Boqueria, Barcelona’s most famous market. Grab a fresh juice, snack on tapas at one of the market bars, or just wander the aisles piled high with jamón, fresh seafood, colorful fruit, and local sweets.
- Spend your free time in Tarragona exploring an ancient amphitheater overlooking the sea, wandering winding old-town streets, and sampling fresh seafood in lively plazas.
- Look up in awe as the skies darken, temperatures dip, and the sun’s rim becomes visible around the edges of the moon during the total solar eclipse.
Day 10: Free Day in Barcelona + optional Sagrada Família Tour & Sangria + Farewell Dinner
The day is yours to experience Barcelona as you please. Whether that means exploring a new neighborhood, kicking back with some tapas and a pitcher of sangria, or joining an optional excursion to enter the Sagrada Familia, you really can’t go wrong.
Farewell Dinner
Share some last laughs (and maybe shed a few tears) at an included farewell dinner with the group.
Market Down: Visit La Boqueria, the famous market just off of Las Ramblas, with everything from fresh fruits to meats, flowers and sweets.
Playa Long: Barcelona’s coast is lined with beaches, each with its own personality. Try party-centric Barceloneta, tranquil Caldetes or water sports at Mar Bella.
Comer Little Closer: From paella, a traditional rice dish, to Basque-style tapas, Barcelona has gastronomy locked down.
Day 11: Fly home
¡Adiós, amigos!
Translation: Goodbye, friends. Your next destination awaits—home. But this isn’t goodbye. It’s “See you later.” The only question is, where?
