Flying is the most practical way to cover Australia's vast distances between major cities and regions — domestic flights are frequent and, when booked in advance, reasonably affordable. Qantas, Virgin Australia, and Jetstar are the main carriers. The east coast between Melbourne and Cairns is popular for road trips and campervan journeys, with a well-developed network of campgrounds and hostels along the route. Trains exist between some major cities — the Indian Pacific between Sydney and Perth and the Ghan between Adelaide and Darwin are iconic long-distance journeys worth doing for the experience — but they're slow and not practical for covering ground efficiently.
