Denmark is one of the most expensive countries in Europe, and Copenhagen in particular is among the priciest cities on the continent. Accommodation, dining, and activities all carry a significant premium compared to most European destinations. That said, there are real ways to manage costs. Copenhagen's excellent cycling infrastructure means you can get around cheaply by bike — rental is affordable and the city is flat and compact. The city's food markets and street food scene (Reffen, Torvehallerne) offer excellent food at more accessible prices than sit-down restaurants. Many of Copenhagen's best experiences are free or low-cost: the Nyhavn waterfront, the Tivoli Gardens (entry fee but worth it), the design museums, and the city's extraordinary architecture are all accessible without spending much. Outside Copenhagen, Denmark is slightly more affordable, particularly in Jutland and on the smaller islands.

Denmark is one of the easiest European countries to navigate as a first-timer — English is almost universally spoken, the infrastructure is excellent, and the Danes are generally friendly and helpful. Cycling is the primary mode of transport in Copenhagen, and renting a bike is the most enjoyable and practical way to explore the city — just be aware that cycle lanes are taken seriously and pedestrians should stay off them. Tipping is not as expected as in the US — service is included in restaurant bills, and leaving a small extra amount is appreciated but not obligatory. Denmark is a cashless society to a remarkable degree — cards and mobile payments are accepted almost everywhere, and carrying cash is largely unnecessary. The Danes take their work-life balance seriously, and many shops and restaurants close earlier than you might expect, particularly on Sundays.

Denmark is best visited from May to September, when the weather is mild, the days are long, and the country's outdoor culture is in full swing. June and July are the peak months — Copenhagen's harbor baths, outdoor festivals, and long evenings make the city feel particularly alive. The shoulder months of May and September offer good weather with fewer crowds and lower prices. Winter (November to February) is cold, dark, and grey, but Denmark's hygge culture — cozy cafés, candlelit restaurants, and the warmth of indoor social life — makes it a surprisingly enjoyable time to visit if you embrace the atmosphere rather than fighting it. Copenhagen's Christmas markets are charming, and the city has a full cultural calendar year-round.

Denmark beyond Copenhagen is genuinely rewarding and often overlooked. Aarhus, Denmark's second city, has a thriving arts scene anchored by the ARoS Art Museum (famous for its rainbow panorama rooftop installation), a beautifully preserved old town, and a food scene that rivals Copenhagen's. The Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, about 35 kilometers north of Copenhagen, is one of the finest modern art museums in Europe, set in a stunning coastal landscape. The Danish Riviera — the coastline north of Copenhagen — has beautiful beaches, historic castles (Kronborg, the setting for Shakespeare's Hamlet), and charming fishing villages. The island of Bornholm in the Baltic Sea is a world apart from the mainland, with a distinctive culture, excellent food, and dramatic coastal scenery. Legoland in Billund is worth a visit even for adults.

Denmark is an excellent destination for solo travelers — safe, English-speaking, easy to navigate, and with a social culture that's warm once you get past the initial Scandinavian reserve. Copenhagen's café culture and food market scene create natural spaces for solo exploration, and the city's compact size means you can cover a lot of ground on foot or by bike without feeling overwhelmed. Solo dining is completely comfortable here — the city has a strong café culture and many restaurants with counter seating. The main challenge of solo travel in Denmark is cost — it's one of the most expensive countries in Europe, and single room supplements add up. Staying in a hostel or booking well in advance is the most effective way to manage accommodation costs. The Danish people are generally helpful and friendly once engaged, and English is spoken so universally that language is never a barrier.
