Germany is part of the Schengen Area, which means visa requirements are governed by Schengen rules. Citizens of the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and most other Western countries can visit Germany and the broader Schengen Area visa-free for stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period. From 2025, the EU is introducing the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) for visa-exempt travelers — similar to the US ESTA — which will require a pre-travel authorization. UK citizens, following Brexit, are now subject to the 90-day Schengen limit and will need ETIAS once it's introduced. Always check the current requirements for your specific nationality before you travel, as the ETIAS rollout timeline has been subject to delays.

Germany is a year-round destination with distinct seasonal appeal. Summer (June to August) is the most popular time to visit — long days, warm temperatures, beer gardens in full swing, and outdoor festivals across the country. The Christmas market season (late November to December) is one of Germany's most beloved travel experiences, with markets in Nuremberg, Cologne, Dresden, and dozens of other cities drawing visitors from across Europe. Spring (April to May) brings pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and the country's parks and gardens at their most beautiful. Winter outside of the Christmas season is cold and grey in most of the country, though it's the best time for skiing in the Bavarian Alps. Oktoberfest in Munich runs from mid-September to the first weekend in October and is one of the world's great festivals — book accommodation months in advance if that's your plan.

Berlin and Munich are both essential Germany, but they represent almost opposite ends of what the country has to offer. Berlin is raw, creative, and historically layered — a city still visibly shaped by division and reunification, with a contemporary arts, music, and nightlife scene that's among the most dynamic in Europe. It's a city of contrasts: the Brandenburg Gate and the Holocaust Memorial, the East Side Gallery and the Reichstag, the street art of Kreuzberg and the elegance of Charlottenburg. Munich is prosperous, orderly, and deeply Bavarian — a city of beer halls, baroque churches, and world-class museums, with the Alps visible on clear days and a quality of life that consistently ranks among the highest in Europe. Berlin tends to attract travelers who want culture, history, and edge; Munich tends to attract those who want beauty, tradition, and the gateway to Bavaria. Both are worth your time.

Germany sits in the middle of the European cost spectrum — more affordable than Switzerland or Scandinavia, but pricier than Eastern Europe. Berlin is one of the more affordable major European capitals, with a good range of budget accommodation, excellent street food, and many free or low-cost cultural attractions. Munich is noticeably more expensive, particularly during Oktoberfest when accommodation prices spike dramatically. The rail network — operated by Deutsche Bahn — is extensive but can be expensive without advance booking; the Deutschland-Ticket (a monthly flat-rate pass for regional transport) is excellent value for travelers spending more than a few days in the country. Eating at traditional German restaurants — schnitzel, sausages, pretzels, regional specialties — is generally good value; tourist-facing restaurants near major sights are pricier. Overall, Germany is very manageable on a mid-range travel budget.

Germany is one of the easier European countries to navigate as a first-timer, but a few things are worth knowing. Germans take rules seriously — jaywalking, cycling on the wrong side of the path, and being loud in quiet carriages on trains are all things that will earn you disapproving looks. Shops in Germany are closed on Sundays almost universally, which catches many visitors off guard — stock up on Saturday if you need supplies. Cash is still widely used in Germany, more so than in many other Western European countries; many smaller restaurants, cafes, and market stalls are cash only, so carrying euros is genuinely useful. Tipping is appreciated but not as mandatory as in the US — rounding up or leaving 10% at restaurants is standard. Finally, Germany's regional diversity is real and worth embracing: Bavaria, the Rhineland, Saxony, and the north all have distinct cultures, dialects, and cuisines.
