Citizens of the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and most EU countries can visit South Korea visa-free for stays of up to 90 days. South Korea has one of the most generous visa-free access policies in Asia, with agreements covering over 100 countries. However, South Korea introduced the K-ETA (Korea Electronic Travel Authorization) system for visa-free travelers, which requires a pre-travel online application — check whether your nationality requires a K-ETA before you travel, as the list of exempted countries has changed in recent years. The K-ETA costs around KRW 10,000 and is typically approved within 72 hours. Always verify the current requirements for your specific nationality before your travel dates.

South Korea is one of the easiest countries in Asia to navigate as a first-timer, but a few things make the experience significantly smoother. The T-money card — a rechargeable transit card — works on all subway, bus, and even some taxi services across the country, and picking one up at the airport or a convenience store on arrival is the single most useful thing you can do. Korean convenience stores (CU, GS25, 7-Eleven) are extraordinary — open 24 hours, selling excellent cheap food, and genuinely useful for everything from snacks to phone charging cables. Tipping is not customary in South Korea and can actually cause confusion or mild offense in some contexts — don't tip at restaurants. Shoes come off in many traditional restaurants and some guesthouses, so slip-on footwear is practical. Finally, Naver Maps is more accurate than Google Maps for navigating South Korea, particularly for public transport routes.

South Korean food is one of the great culinary traditions of Asia, and experiencing it properly is one of the best reasons to visit. The street food scene in Seoul — tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes), hotteok (sweet pancakes), odeng (fish cake skewers), tornado potatoes — is extraordinary and very affordable. Korean barbecue, where you grill meat at the table, is a social institution and one of the most enjoyable dining experiences in the country. Beyond the classics, Seoul has a sophisticated restaurant scene that ranges from traditional hansik (Korean cuisine) to some of the best Japanese, Chinese, and international food in Asia. Regional specialties are worth seeking out: Jeonju is famous for bibimbap, Busan for seafood and dwaeji gukbap (pork soup), and Jeju for black pork and fresh seafood. Food markets — Gwangjang Market in Seoul, Jagalchi Fish Market in Busan — are some of the best places to eat and the most immersive food experiences in the country.

South Korea is compact enough that ten days gives you a very comprehensive first trip. A typical itinerary might include five or six days in Seoul — enough to explore the main neighborhoods (Insadong, Hongdae, Itaewon, Bukchon), visit the palaces, do a DMZ tour, and eat your way through the city — followed by a KTX bullet train to Busan for the coast and seafood, and then either Gyeongju for history or Jeju Island for nature. Two weeks lets you slow down and add a temple stay experience, a hike in one of the national parks, or more time on Jeju. The KTX high-speed rail network makes getting between cities fast and comfortable — Seoul to Busan takes about two and a half hours.

South Korea is an excellent destination for solo travelers — safe, efficient, English-friendly in tourist areas and cities, and with a food culture that's perfectly suited to eating alone. Solo dining is completely normalized here, and many restaurants have counter seating specifically designed for it. The hostel and guesthouse scene in Seoul is well-developed, and the city's social culture — particularly in neighborhoods like Hongdae and Itaewon — makes meeting people straightforward. Solo women travelers generally find South Korea very safe and comfortable. The main consideration for solo travel is that Korean barbecue — one of the best dining experiences in the country — is designed for groups, and some restaurants have minimum order requirements that make it awkward for solo diners. Joining a food tour or a group trip solves this neatly.

South Korea has four distinct seasons, and each offers a different experience. Spring (late March to May) is the most popular time to visit — cherry blossoms transform the country for a few weeks in late March and early April, and the weather is mild and pleasant. Autumn (September to November) is equally beautiful, with vivid foliage in the mountain national parks and comfortable temperatures. Summer (June to August) is hot, humid, and includes the monsoon season (jangma) from late June to mid-July — manageable but not ideal for outdoor activities. Winter (December to February) is cold, particularly in the north, but brings clear skies, excellent skiing in the Gangwon province, and a festive atmosphere in the cities. Spring and autumn are the clear favorites for most travelers.
