Czech is a complex language, but locals genuinely appreciate any effort. Start with these: 

• Dobrý den: Good day (formal hello) 

• Ahoj: Hi / bye (casual)

Prague is a city that moves at a comfortable pace and takes its traditions seriously. A few things to know: 

• Czech people are reserved at first. Don't mistake quietness for unfriendliness—once you get talking, people are warm and genuinely helpful. 

• Tipping is expected. Unlike some European countries, tipping is standard in Prague. Around 10% at restaurants is the norm. Round up for taxis. 

• The Czech crown (CZK) is the currency. Prague is not on the euro. Avoid exchange booths at the airport and in tourist areas—rates are poor. Use an ATM instead. 

• Public transport is excellent and cheap. Trams, metro, and buses cover the city thoroughly. A 24-hour pass is great value. 

• Tourist traps are real. Restaurants directly on Old Town Square charge significantly more for significantly less. Walk one or two streets away for better food at better prices. 

• Prague is very walkable. The historic center is compact and best explored on foot. Comfortable shoes are essential on the cobblestones.

Czech cuisine is hearty, warming, and built for the climate. Here's what to eat: 

• Svíčková: Slow-braised beef sirloin in a creamy root vegetable sauce, served with bread dumplings and cranberry. The national comfort dish. 

• Trdelník: A warm, spiral-shaped pastry cooked over an open flame and rolled in cinnamon sugar. Best eaten fresh from a market stall. 

• Goulash: Rich, paprika-heavy beef stew served with bread dumplings. Find it at a traditional hospoda (pub) for the real thing. 

• Fried cheese (smažený sýr): Breaded and fried Edam cheese, served with tartar sauce. Sounds simple. Tastes great. 

• Czech beer: Pilsner Urquell, Kozel, Budvar—Czech lager is some of the best in the world, and it's remarkably cheap. Drink it fresh and local. 

• Chlebíčky: Open-faced sandwiches topped with cold cuts, egg, and pickles. A Czech deli staple and a great quick lunch. 

• Mulled wine (svařák): A Christmas market essential, but available at many spots through the colder months. Spiced, warm, and very good.

Prague is one of Europe's most beautiful and best-preserved historic cities: 

• Prague Castle: The largest ancient castle complex in the world, sitting above the city with views that stretch for miles. St. Vitus Cathedral inside is extraordinary. 

• Old Town Square: The heart of historic Prague, with the famous Astronomical Clock, Gothic churches, and Baroque palaces all within a short walk of each other. 

• Charles Bridge: One of the most iconic bridges in Europe. Go at dawn for the best experience. 

• Josefov (the Jewish Quarter): One of the best-preserved Jewish quarters in Europe, with six synagogues and a historic cemetery that tells a powerful story. 

• Malá Strana: The "Little Quarter" below the castle, full of Baroque architecture, quiet gardens, and the John Lennon Wall. 

• Vinohrady: Prague's most livable neighborhood, away from the tourist center—great restaurants, wine bars, and a glimpse of how locals actually live. 

• A river cruise on the Vltava: The city looks completely different from the water, especially at dusk.

Prague has one of the richest cultural histories in Central Europe: 

• A city of writers and thinkers: Franz Kafka was born here. Milan Kundera grew up here. Prague has a deep literary tradition that's still very much alive in its bookshops and cafés. 

• Music: Prague has a serious classical music tradition—Mozart premiered Don Giovanni here in 1787. The city's concert halls and churches host world-class performances year-round. 

• Beer culture: Czech brewing is not just a pastime—it's a national institution. The hospoda (pub) is where community happens, debates are had, and friendships are made. 

• Velvet Revolution legacy: The peaceful 1989 revolution that ended communist rule in Czechoslovakia is a source of enormous pride. The city's recent history is fascinating and worth understanding. 

• Architecture: Prague survived World War II largely intact, which means its medieval, Gothic, Baroque, and Art Nouveau architecture exists side by side in a way that's almost unreal.

Prague is a year-round destination with distinct seasonal personalities: 

• Spring (April-May): The city blooms, the weather is mild, and the tourist crowds haven't fully arrived. One of the best times to visit. 

• Summer (June-August): Warm, lively, and very busy. The city is at its most energetic but also its most crowded. Book accommodation early and visit major sites in the early morning. 

• Fall (September-October): Crisp air, golden light, and noticeably fewer tourists than summer. A great time to explore the city at a comfortable pace. 

• Winter (November-March): Cold, sometimes snowy, and absolutely magical during the Christmas market season (late November through December). January and February are the quietest and most affordable months.
