The official language of Italy is Italian—and in Florence, the Tuscan dialect is considered the purest, most musical form of the language in the entire country. Florentines are proud of this, and even a few words attempted with genuine enthusiasm will go a long way. Don’t worry about perfection.  

Hello: Ciao (CHOW)—the iconic Italian greeting that works for both hello and goodbye. Casual, warm, and used absolutely everywhere. 

Hello (formal): Buongiorno (bwon-JOR-no)—good morning, used as a formal hello until around midday. Switch to Buonasera (bwon-ah-SAIR-ah) in the evening. 

Goodbye: Arrivederci (ah-ree-veh-DAIR-chee)—the classic formal farewell. Ciao works fine for casual goodbyes too. 

Thank you: Grazie (GRAT-syeh)—short, easy, and used constantly. Add mille (MEEL-leh) for “a thousand thanks” when someone really comes through for you. 

Please/you’re welcome: Per favore (pair fah-VOR-eh) for please, and Prego (PREH-go) for you’re welcome. Prego also means “go ahead” and “here you are”—one of Italian’s most versatile words. 

Cheers! Salute (sah-LOO-teh)—the Italian toast. Eye contact is non-negotiable. Always. 

Delicious: Buonissimo (bwon-EES-see-mo)—because Florence is one of the greatest food cities on earth and you will be saying this after every single meal. 

A coffee, please: Un caffè, per favore (oon kah-FEH pair fah-VOR-eh)—essential. In Italy, caffè means espresso. Standing at the bar to drink it is the local way and usually cheaper. Don’t ask for a latte after 11am unless you want a look. 

One more wine please: Un altro vino, per favore (oon AL-tro VEE-no pair fah-VOR-eh)—Tuscany produces some of the world’s greatest wine. Chianti, Brunello, Vernaccia—you’ll need this phrase more than once. 

Where is...? Dov’è...? (doh-VEH)—pair with a confident point at your map and you’re basically navigating like a local. 

Florence moves at a pace that’s intentional, convivial, and deeply tied to its traditions: 

• Coffee culture: Italians take their espresso seriously. Morning coffee at the bar is a ritual, not a habit. 

• Long lunches: Midday meals are an event. Shops close, locals gather, and nobody rushes. 

• Aperitivo hour: Pre-dinner drinks with snacks—typically from 6–8 pm—are a beloved daily tradition. Negroni in hand, obviously. 

• Walkability: Florence’s historic center is almost entirely pedestrian-friendly and best explored on foot. 

• Art everywhere: Florence isn’t just a city with art in it—it’s a city built from art. It’s in the architecture, the piazzas, the doors, the ceilings. All of it.

Florence is one of Italy’s greatest food cities, and Tuscan cuisine is its own deeply satisfying universe.

• Bistecca alla Fiorentina: Florence’s legendary T-bone steak, grilled over wood and served rare. Ordering it well-done is not recommended. 

• Ribollita: A hearty Tuscan bread and vegetable stew that tastes like someone’s grandmother made it specifically for you. 

• Lampredotto: A beloved Florentine street food made from tripe—adventurous, delicious, and very local. 

• Gelato: Florence takes gelato seriously. Look for artisanal shops where the gelato is stored in metal containers with lids—that’s the real thing. 

• Chianti wine: You’re in Tuscany. Drinking the local red isn’t just encouraged, it’s practically required.

From world-famous museums to hilltop sunsets, Florence is endlessly rewarding: 

• Climb the Duomo: Brunelleschi’s dome is an architectural miracle—climb it for views across the Florentine rooftops that you’ll think about for years. 

• Visit the Uffizi Gallery: Stand in front of Botticelli’s Birth of Venus and Primavera. No screen does them justice. Book tickets in advance. 

• Cross the Ponte Vecchio: Florence’s oldest bridge is iconic for a reason. Walk it at golden hour for the full effect. 

• Wander Oltrarno: Cross the river and spend an afternoon in Florence’s artisan quarter—leather workshops, wine bars, and trattorias with no tourists in sight. 

• Watch sunset from Piazzale Michelangelo: The panoramic view of Florence at dusk is one of the great free experiences in Europe. Go early to get a good spot.

Florence’s culture is rooted in artistry, craftsmanship, and a profound sense of beauty: 

• Renaissance art: Florence was the birthplace of the Renaissance. The concentration of masterpieces here—Michelangelo’s David, Botticelli’s Venus, Ghiberti’s Gates of Paradise—is unmatched anywhere on earth. 

• Artisan traditions: Leather goods, goldsmithing, bookbinding, and paper marbling are still practiced by skilled artisans throughout the city. 

• Food as culture: Tuscan cuisine isn’t just food—it’s a philosophy. Seasonal, local, unfussy, and deeply satisfying. 

• Fashion: Florence is one of Italy’s fashion capitals, with a strong tradition in luxury leather goods and design that still shapes the industry today. 

• Slow living: The Florentine pace of life—long meals, afternoon pauses, evening strolls—is a cultural value, not just a habit.

Florence rewards visitors year-round, but the season really shapes the experience.

• Spring (March–May): Warm, beautiful, and blooming. Crowds are manageable and the light is incredible. The best time to visit for most travelers. 

• Summer (June–August): Hot—sometimes very hot—and busy. Go early in the day to beat the heat and the lines at major museums. 

• Autumn (September–November): Arguably the most magical season. Harvest time in Tuscany, golden light everywhere, and the summer crowds gone. Highly recommended. 

• Winter (December–February): Quieter, cooler, and genuinely charming. Fewer tourists, shorter lines at the Uffizi, and cozy wine bars to retreat to after a morning of art.
