Rome trips

Italians are warm and expressive—and any effort you make with the language will be met with genuine appreciation. A few to get you started: 

• Ciao: Hello / goodbye—casual and used constantly 

• Buongiorno: Good morning / good day—use this in more formal settings 

• Grazie: Thank you 

• Prego: You’re welcome—also used to mean “go ahead” or “here you are” 

• Scusi: Excuse me 

• Il conto, per favore: The check, please 

• Dov’è...?: Where is...? 

• Un caffè, per favore: A coffee, please—possibly the most useful phrase on this list

Rome operates on its own schedule and the sooner you accept that, the better your trip will be. A few things to know: 

• Coffee has rules. Cappuccino is a morning drink—ordering one after noon is a mild scandal. Espresso is for any time of day. Stand at the bar to order; it’s cheaper and more local. 

• Dress codes at religious sites are enforced. Shoulders and knees must be covered to enter churches, including St. Peter’s Basilica. Carry a scarf or light layer. 

• Lunch is the main event. Romans eat late and eat well. A proper lunch can stretch two hours. Dinner rarely starts before 8PM. 

• Tipping is not customary. A small rounding up or leaving a euro or two is appreciated but not expected. Watch out for “coperto”, a cover charge that’s standard at sit-down restaurants. 

• Pickpocketing happens. Especially around the Colosseum, the Vatican, and on crowded buses. Keep valuables secure and stay aware in busy areas. 

• The water fountains are drinkable. Rome’s iconic “nasoni” street fountains run cold, clean drinking water. Refill your bottle freely.

Roman food is not trying to impress you—it’s just really, really good. The cuisine is built on a handful of simple, perfect ingredients done with total conviction. Here’s what to eat: 

• Cacio e pepe: Pasta, pecorino, black pepper. That’s it. That’s the dish. Find a good trattoria and order it immediately. 

• Supplì: Fried rice balls with a molten mozzarella center—Rome’s answer to street food, and one of the best things you’ll eat. 

• Pizza al taglio: Pizza by the slice, sold by weight, eaten standing up. Crispy, oily, perfect. 

• Carbonara: Eggs, guanciale, pecorino, black pepper—no cream, ever. The Roman version is the original and the best. 

• Gelato: Not all gelato is created equal. Look for places where it’s stored in covered metal containers, not piled high in colorful mounds. 

• Artichokes: Rome does artichokes two ways—carciofi alla giudia (deep fried, crispy) and carciofi alla romana (braised with herbs). Order both. 

• Aperitivo: Pre-dinner drinks with snacks—Negroni, Aperol spritz, or a glass of local wine. Non-negotiable.

Rome is one of those cities where you could spend a week and still feel like you’ve only scratched the surface: 

• The Colosseum: One of the greatest architectural achievements in human history—and still standing after two millennia. Book tickets in advance. 

• The Roman Forum: The political and social heart of ancient Rome, now a sprawling open-air ruin that’s endlessly fascinating to walk through. 

• Vatican City: St. Peter’s Basilica, the Vatican Museums, and the Sistine Chapel—plan at least half a day and go with a guide. 

• The Pantheon: Nearly 2,000 years old and still the best-preserved ancient building in Rome. Walk in, look up, and try not to be floored. 

• Trastevere: Rome’s most charming neighborhood—cobblestone streets, ivy-covered buildings, great trattorias, and a local energy that’s hard to find in the more touristy areas. 

• Piazza Navona: Baroque fountains, street artists, outdoor cafés, and the kind of lively piazza energy that makes Rome feel like a living stage set. 

• The Trevi Fountain: Throw a coin, make a wish, and accept that it will be crowded—it’s still worth it.

Rome is a city that has seen everything—and that gives it a particular kind of confidence and ease: 

• La dolce vita is real. The sweet life isn’t a cliché here; it’s a genuine philosophy. Slow down, enjoy the meal, and linger over the coffee. Rome will reward you for it. 

• Family is central. Roman life revolves around family, Sunday lunches, multi-generational dinners, kids running around piazzas late into the evening. It gives the city a warmth that’s hard to describe until you’re in it. 

• History is everywhere, casually. Romans live alongside ruins the way other cities live alongside parks. A 2,000-year-old temple is just part of the commute. That nonchalance is part of the city’s charm. 

• Passion and expressiveness: Romans are loud, warm, and opinionated—in the best way. Conversations are animated, gestures are generous, and strangers will talk to you like they’ve known you for years. 

• Pride in food: Ask a Roman where to eat and you’ll get a fifteen-minute answer. They care deeply about this. Take the recommendations.

Rome is a year-round destination, but the season shapes the experience significantly: 

• Spring (April–June): Arguably the best time to visit—warm but not brutal, the city is in full bloom, and the energy is high without the suffocating summer crowds. Easter in Rome is a spectacle unto itself. 

• Summer (July–August): Hot. Very hot. The city fills with tourists and the lines at major sites get long. That said, summer evenings in Rome—gelato in hand, wandering a lit-up piazza—are genuinely magical. 

• Fall (September–November): The sweet spot. Temperatures drop to something comfortable, crowds thin out, and the city settles into a more local rhythm. October is particularly good. 

• Winter (December–February): Mild by northern European standards, quiet, and surprisingly charming. Christmas in Rome is festive and atmospheric, and you’ll have the Colosseum practically to yourself in January.
