Amsterdam trips

Most people in Amsterdam speak excellent English, but a few Dutch phrases will earn you genuine warmth: 

• Hallo / Hoi: Hello (formal / casual) 

• Dank je wel: Thank you 

• Alsjeblieft: Please / here you go 

• Sorry: Excuse me (same word, used constantly) 

• Waar is...?: Where is...? 

• Proost: Cheers 

• Lekker: Delicious / nice / great—one word that does a lot of work 

• Gezellig: Cozy, convivial, warm—the Dutch concept of a good atmosphere with good people

Amsterdam is relaxed, direct, and genuinely welcoming. A few things to know before you arrive: 

• Bikes have the right of way. Always. Look both ways before stepping off a pavement—the bike lane is not the pavement. This is serious. 

• Directness is a cultural trait. Amsterdammers say what they mean. Don’t mistake it for rudeness—it’s just how people communicate here. 

• Tipping is appreciated but modest. Rounding up or leaving 5-10% is the norm. No need to go higher. 

• Public transport is excellent. Trams, metro, and ferries cover the city well. Get an OV-chipkaart for easy travel. 

• The city is very walkable and bikeable. Most major attractions are within cycling distance of each other. Rent a bike early in your trip and use it constantly. 

• Cannabis is tolerated, not legal. Coffee shops operate in a legal grey area. Know the rules before you engage.

Dutch food is hearty, honest, and better than its reputation suggests. Here’s what to eat: 

• Stroopwafels: Two thin waffles sandwiching caramel syrup. Buy them fresh from a market stall and eat them warm. 

• Bitterballen: Deep-fried crispy balls with a creamy meat ragù inside. A staple at any Dutch bar. Order them immediately. 

• Herring (haring): Raw, cured, and eaten the traditional way—held by the tail and lowered into your mouth. A rite of passage. 

• Dutch pancakes (pannenkoeken): Thinner than American pancakes, bigger than crêpes, and topped with everything from bacon to syrup to cheese. 

• Jenever: Dutch gin, the ancestor of the gin you know. Sip it straight at a traditional brown café (bruine kroeg). 

• Indonesian food: A legacy of Dutch colonial history, Indonesian cuisine is deeply embedded in Amsterdam’s food culture. Rijsttafel—a spread of small Indonesian dishes—is a must. 

• Cheese: Gouda and Edam are Dutch originals. Try them fresh from a market, not pre-packaged.

Amsterdam is compact but endlessly layered: 

• The Anne Frank House: One of the most moving and important historical sites in Europe. Book tickets well in advance. 

• The Rijksmuseum: Home to Rembrandt, Vermeer, and one of the great art collections in the world. Give it at least half a day. 

• The canal ring: A UNESCO World Heritage Site and the backbone of the city. Walk it, boat it, photograph it from every bridge. 

• The Jordaan: Amsterdam’s most charming neighborhood—best explored on foot with no particular plan. 

• The Van Gogh Museum: An intimate, beautifully curated look at one of history’s most compelling artists. Book ahead. 

• Vondelpark: Amsterdam’s beloved green lung—locals picnic, cycle, and generally live their best lives here on any sunny day. 

• A windmill day trip: The Zaanse Schans or the Waterland region put you in the Dutch countryside within 30 minutes of the city center.

Amsterdam punches well above its size when it comes to culture, history, and open-mindedness: 

• Tolerance and liberalism: Amsterdam has a long history of welcoming outsiders and embracing progressive values. It’s a genuinely open city. 

• Cycling culture: The bike isn’t just transport here—it’s a way of life. There are more bikes than people in Amsterdam. 

• The Golden Age: The 17th century made Amsterdam one of the wealthiest and most powerful cities in the world. That legacy is visible everywhere, from the canal houses to the art museums. 

• Gezelligheid: The Dutch concept of coziness and conviviality—a warm bar, good company, candlelight. You’ll feel it in the brown cafés and canal-side terraces. 

• Art and design: Amsterdam has a thriving creative scene that goes well beyond the major museums. Street art, independent galleries, and design shops are woven into everyday life.

Amsterdam has something to offer year-round, but the season shapes the experience: 

• Spring (April-May): Tulip season, mild weather, and the city at its most photogenic. Keukenhof gardens are in full bloom. This is peak Amsterdam—book early. 

• Summer (June-August): Long days, outdoor terraces, canal swimming, and a city buzzing with energy. Crowds peak in July and August, but the atmosphere is hard to beat. 

• Fall (September-November): Quieter, crisper, and still very beautiful. The canal-side trees turn golden and the museum queues thin out considerably. 

• Winter (December-February): Cold and sometimes grey, but Amsterdam in winter has real charm. Christmas lights reflect off the canals, the museums are quiet, and the brown cafés are at their coziest.
