Spanish is the official language, and Madrileños appreciate any effort you make—even if your accent needs work. Here are the essentials: 

• Hello: Hola (OH-lah): Works for everything from walking into a shop to greeting your new travel friends. Universally warm. 

• Goodbye: Adiós (ah-dee-OHS): Also, Hasta luego (AH-stah loo-EH-go) for “see you later,” which feels more local. 

• Yes/No: Sí (see) / No (noh). Easy. You’ve got this. 

• Please: Por favor (por fah-VOR): Add it to the end of any request and you’re instantly more charming. 

• Thank you: Gracias (GRAH-syahs): The response you’ll get is De nada (deh NAH-dah)—“you’re welcome.” 

• Excuse me: Perdona (pair-DOH-nah): Essential for navigating busy markets, tapas bars, and any narrow medieval alleyway in Toledo. 

• Where is...? ¿Dónde está...? (DON-deh eh-STAH): Pair with a confident look and your Google Maps and you’re basically a local. 

• A small beer, please: Una caña, por favor (OO-nah KAH-nyah por fah-VOR): The single most useful phrase in Madrid. 

• The bill, please: La cuenta, por favor (lah KWEN-tah por fah-VOR): Nobody brings it automatically here—you have to ask, which honestly just means more time to order another round. 

• Cheers! ¡Salud! (sah-LOOD): Eye contact is non-negotiable. Always. 

• How delicious: Qué rico (keh REE-koh): You’ll say this a lot. Start practicing now.

Madrid runs on a schedule that will short-circuit everything you thought you knew about mealtimes: 

• Lunch is the main event: Madrileños eat lunch between 2 and 4 pm—and they mean it. It’s a proper multi-course affair, and the city slows down for it. 

• Dinner starts late: Don’t show up at a restaurant before 9 pm. Seriously. 10 pm is normal. Midnight is not unreasonable. 

• Tapas culture is real: Small plates, low prices, and the expectation that you’ll move between bars rather than stay in one. It’s a sport and a social institution. 

• The nightlife is legendary: Madrid clubs don’t hit their stride until 2 am. Sunrise is a normal time to head home. Pace yourself. 

• Sundays belong to El Rastro: The city’s sprawling outdoor flea market in La Latina is a ritual. Go early, haggle freely, and stay for the vermouth hour after. 

• Terraza season is serious: As soon as the sun is out, the outdoor terraces fill up. Find a seat, order a drink, and don’t rush.

Madrid doesn’t have a coastline, but it has everything else—and the food scene reflects centuries of culinary confidence. 

• Tortilla española: The Spanish omelette. Eggs, potato, olive oil, and a whole lot of technique. Debate whether it should include onion at your own risk—Madrileños have strong opinions. 

• Bocadillo de calamares: A fried calamari sandwich. It sounds simple. It’s magnificent. Get one near Plaza Mayor. 

• Cocido madrileño: Madrid’s iconic slow-cooked chickpea stew, served in stages. It’s a winter institution and a full afternoon commitment. 

• Jamón ibérico: Cured Iberian ham, sliced paper-thin. It’s everywhere, it’s extraordinary, and you’ll eat more of it than you expect. 

• Patatas bravas: Crispy fried potatoes with spicy tomato sauce and aioli. Every bar has them. Every bar’s version is slightly different. Try them all. 

• Churros con chocolate: The Madrid breakfast. Crispy fried dough with a cup of thick hot chocolate for dipping. Chocolate San Ginés is open 24 hours. No notes. 

• Vermouth hour: Vermut (VER-moot) before Sunday lunch is a genuine ritual. Order it with olives and an anchovy, do it at a terrace, and feel completely at home.

From world-famous museums to top-tier dining culture, Madrid constantly overdelivers. 

• Spend a morning at the Prado: Give yourself at least 3 hours. Don’t try to see everything—go deep on Velázquez and Goya and leave before your feet give out. 

• Walk Gran Vía at night: The lights, the architecture, the energy. It’s a genuinely great city street at any hour, but it really comes alive after dark. 

• Get lost in La Latina on a Sunday: El Rastro, then vermouth, then tapas. In that order. All morning. No agenda. 

• Day trip to Toledo: 30 minutes on the high-speed train and you’re in a completely different world. Cathedral, Alcázar, winding medieval streets. Go for the day, come back amazed. 

• Visit the Reina Sofía: Stand in front of Guernica. Take your time. It’s bigger than you expect and hits harder than any reproduction can prepare you for. 

• Eat churros at San Ginés: Yes, it’s a classic. Yes, it’s still excellent. 3 am or 9 am—both are correct. 

• Have a beer at a terrace in Malasaña: Order a caña, watch the neighborhood wake up, and plan the rest of your day from there.

Madrid has a reputation as Spain’s most self-assured city—and it’s earned. 

• Pride in the city runs deep: Madrileños love Madrid with a specific, cheerful intensity. Ask anyone where to eat and they’ll give you a 10-minute answer. Take notes. 

• Art is everywhere: Beyond the big museums, Madrid’s streets, markets, and neighborhoods are full of public art, architecture, and design that rewards the curious. 

• Football is a whole thing: Real Madrid vs. Atlético Madrid is one of the great city derbies in world sport. If a match is on, the city feels it. 

• The pace is unhurried—on purpose: Madrileños aren’t slow. They’re deliberate. Meals take time. Conversations go long. There’s no prize for rushing. 

• Nightlife is cultural, not just recreational: Going out late, staying out later, and doing it all with friends is genuinely how the city connects. It’s not hedonism—it’s community. 

• Generosity is the default: Rounds are shared, plates are passed, and the expectation is always that there’s enough for everyone.

Madrid has a classic continental climate—hot summers, cold winters, and two ideal shoulder seasons in between: 

• March–May: The best time to visit for most travelers. Warm, sunny, manageable crowds, and the city in full bloom. Retiro Park in spring is genuinely beautiful. 

• June–August: Hot—sometimes very hot, frequently above 95°F. The city empties out in August as locals head to the coast. Major attractions are quieter, but the heat is real. 

• September–November: Arguably the sweet spot. Summer crowds are gone, temperatures are pleasant, and the city is back in full swing after the August exodus. 

• December–February: Cold and crisp, with significantly fewer tourists. The Christmas markets around Plaza Mayor are worth it, and the museums have almost no lines.
