Itinerary

Day 1: Overnight flight
Read up on your pharaohs and hieroglyphs, board your overnight flight to Cairo, and channel your inner mummy to catch some zzz’s. Next stop: Egypt, the Gift of the Nile.
Day 2: Arrive in Cairo + travel to Giza
Welcome to Cairo! Situated on the banks of the Nile River, Egypt's capital city is the largest in Africa and the Arab world, home to nearly 20 million people and the gateway to the Pyramids. Depending on when your flight arrives, you’ll check into your hotel in Giza and enjoy a buffet dinner at the hotel or order room service.
Please note: Getting to Egypt takes some time. Arrivals tend to be late on this day.
- Arrive at the airport and meet up with your Tour Director and fellow travelers before heading to your hotel in Giza.
- Refuel with dinner at the hotel buffet or enjoy room service to eat in bed before you pass out. Fancy.
- Rest up—your odyssey through ancient wonders is about to begin.
Day 3: Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx + Welcome Dinner
On your first full day in Cairo, the ancient past collides with the present. Stand in awe before the towering Pyramids of Giza, marvel at the engineering behind the Great Pyramid, and snap that photo smooching the Sphinx.
In the evening, enjoy your Welcome Dinner. Hosted by your Tour Director, this kickoff dinner is all about meeting your fellow travelers, swapping stories, and easing into the rest of the trip ahead.
- Follow your expert guide, a trained Egyptologist, as you tour the grounds at the Giza Necropolis, where you’ll learn about the construction, excavation, and the pharaohs buried here. The Necropolis features the iconic Great Pyramid of Khufu, the only surviving Wonder of the Ancient World, the smaller pyramids of Khafre and Menkaure, and of course, the mysterious Sphinx.
- Go inside the Great Pyramid of Khufu (for an additional cost), accessing the interior through the newer “Robber’s Tunnel,” then descending into the Grand Gallery and King’s Chamber. But be warned, if you’re at all claustrophobic, you might want to skip this particular adventure.
Ask your Tour Director:
- How to haggle like a pro: From bustling bazaars in Aswan to souvenir stalls near Luxor, your TD can teach you the art of bargaining respectfully (and getting a fair price).
- Which temples hide the best stories: Beyond the big names like Karnak and Abu Simbel, there are countless smaller temples and tombs packed with legends and hieroglyphs your guide can bring to life.
- Where to try authentic Egyptian food: From freshly baked koshari to sweet basbousa, your TD can point you to the dishes and spots locals swear by.
- How to decode hieroglyphs: Impress your group by learning to recognize a few common symbols and the stories they tell.
- What local customs to know on the Nile: From greetings to temple etiquette, your TD can show you how to experience Egypt like a respectful traveler, not just a tourist.
Day 4: Fly to Aswan + felucca sailboat ride
This morning, travel to Cairo where you’ll board a flight with your group to Aswan, a city on the Nile River known for its scenic river views, year-round warm weather, and countless archaeological sites. Aswan has it all! After checking into your hotel, board a felucca, a traditional sailboat, and ride past sights like Elephantine Island and Agha Khan Mausoleum.
- Travel to Cairo and board your short morning flight from Cairo to Aswan, then check into your next accommodation.
- Climb aboard a traditional felucca and sail along the Nile with your group, taking in panoramic views of the water from the Mausoleum of Aga Khan.
- Peep the famous granite rocks that resemble a herd of elephants bathing in the river.
Day 5: Nile River Cruise: Aswan + Temple of Philae
Kiss the mainland goodbye this morning as you board your cruise ship for a 3-night, 4-day epic adventure on the Nile River, the longest river in Africa and disputed longest river in the world (Amazon who?!). After you’ve taken time to explore the Temple of Philae, work up an appetite shopping at the local markets so you can enjoy an included lunch back on the cruise ship.
- Begin your once-in-a-lifetime journey on the Nile River as you board your cruise ship in Aswan.
- Explore the Temple of Philae, located on an island in the Nile River. This temple served as a center of worship for the goddess Isis, one of the most famous gods in the Egyptian pantheon.
- Shop ‘till you drop at the local markets and learn about perfume oils, Frankincense, and traditional local remedies.
- Kick back and take in the river views accompanied by an included lunch and dinner on the boat.
Day 6: Nile River Cruise: Kom Ombo + Luxor
The fun continues! Head north to Kom Ombo, an agricultural town previously known as the “City of Gold.” Cue the ooohs and aaahs. And if gold doesn’t get your attention, maybe mummified crocodiles at the Temple of Kom Ombo will.
- Sail along the Nile and learn more about the region from a local Egyptologist on the ship.
- Dock in Kom Ombo and visit the ancient Temple of Kom Ombo, built during the Greco-Roman period.
- Learn about the Temple’s twin deities, Sobek and Horus, the crocodile god and the falcon-headed god, respectively.
- Feast on an included lunch after you’ve had your fill of crocs.
- Continue the journey north towards Luxor and enjoy an included dinner along the way.
Day 7: Nile River Cruise: Karnak + Luxor East Bank
On your last full cruise day, enjoy guided tours of both Karnak Temple and Luxor Temple. Enter Karnak Temple for a walking tour through the complex of pillars, statues and hieroglyphics. View the great hypostyle hall Precinct of Amun Re, walls of hieroglyphics, the sacred lake, Temple of Khonsu and statue of Ramses II. Finally, head to the Luxor Temple complex, located on the bank of Nile, for an early evening walking tour viewing Obelisks, the Avenue of Sphinxes, temple halls, statues and the Mosque of Abu Al Haggag.
- Pick your jaw up off the ground as you stroll through the sprawling temple complexes of Karnak and Luxor, which includes the Great Temple of Amun-Re and the Avenue of the Sphinxes.
- Visit a Papyrus shop to learn about traditional Egyptian paper followed by free time for shopping.
- Toast the Nile River farewell with a final included dinner on your Egyptian cruise ship.
Day 8: Luxor West Bank + optional hot-air balloon ride in Luxor
This morning, behold the sacred sights of the West Bank of Luxor. For 500 years, this is where ancient Egyptians built tons of tombs and shrines to royalty including Queen Hatshepsut and King Tut. Explore the thusly named Valley of the Kings today and do your best not to disturb any sleeping pharaohs.
- Listen closely as your guide teaches you about the Valley of the King’s many limestone tombs and their ancient inhabitants.
- Look straight up at the Colossi of Memnon—two 60-foot statues of Pharaoh Amenhotep.
- Climb the stairs of the reconstructed Temple of Queen Hatshepsut built into the cliffs.
- Visit the tomb of King Tut, the valley’s most famous resident, where for an extra cost, you may enter the burial chamber to see his mummy where it still lays at rest.
- Board your short afternoon flight from Luxor to Cairo.
Day 9: Sightseeing tour of Cairo + Farewell Dinner
It’s your last day in Egypt. You’ve almost climbed the metaphorical pyramid that is this trip. If you didn’t get enough ancient Egyptian education and experiences over the last eight days, prepare to have your mind blown all over again at the world’s largest collection of ancient Egyptian artifacts and on a tour of Old Cairo. It’s all the Egyptian stuff you’ve ever learned about, but IRL.
In the evening, it’s time for your Farewell Dinner. Relive the best stories, the funniest inside jokes, and all the unforgettable moments you’ve shared with new friends. Raise a glass, maybe shed a few tears, and start planning your next adventure.
- Step into Coptic Cairo, or Old Cairo, one of the city’s oldest and historically Christian neighborhoods that’s home to some of the world’s most storied churches like the iconic Hanging Church, built above a Roman fortress. With its narrow alleyways and tranquil atmosphere, this history-steeped area is a peaceful escape from the bustle of Cairo.
- Take in the sweeping views of the city from the hilltop Salah El-Din Citadel, a 12th century fortress built to protect the city from European Crusaders. Made of limestone from the nearby Pyramids of Giza, the citadel complex features multiple mosques, palaces, and museums.
- Enter the grand Muhammad Ali Mosque, also known as the Alabaster Mosque for its bright marble walls. Inspired by the famous Blue Mosque in Istanbul, Turkey, this stunning example of Ottoman-style architecture was built in the 19th century to honor Muhammad Ali Pasha, who is considered the modern founder of Egypt. The dress code is modest, and no shoes, please!
Day 10: Fly Home
Wadaeaan ya aisdiqa'!
Translation: goodbye, friends! Your next destination awaits—home. But this isn’t goodbye. It’s “See you later.” The only question is, where?
Cairo extension
Ready for three extra days of ancient history, vibrant markets, and a hundred million more photo ops? Stick around to see another side of Cairo, explore the surrounding desert, and soak up the city’s mix of chaos, charm, and unforgettable energy.
Day 10: Check out of hotel + transfer to Zamalek neighborhood + walking tour
Zamalek is one of Cairo’s most elegant neighborhoods, set on a leafy island in the Nile. Known for its relaxed vibe, creative atmosphere, cafes, and boutiques, Zamalek feels like a true oasis. In the afternoon, take a walking tour through its quiet streets, stopping for coffee, pastries, and local treats along the way.
Day 11: Fayoum and Wadi al-Hitan day trip
An incredible day is in store! Kick things off with a thrilling 4x4 ride across the desert dunes of Fayoum, one of Egypt’s seven main oases. Stop at a Bedouin camp for a cup of tea and a peek into local culture, then it’s off to Wadi al-Hitan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where you’ll walk among fossilized whale skeletons. End your adventure touring the ancient village of Tunis and its Old Medina—think colorful souks, historic mosques, and treasures waiting to be discovered.
Day 12: Morning tour of hidden Cairo
Today you’ll experience a more unique side of the capital. Explore Cairo’s east bank, starting with a drive through Manshiyat Naser—known as Garbage City—where you’ll learn about the Zabaleen community’s informal (but super efficient) recycling system. Continue up Moqattam Mountain to St. Simon the Tanner Monastery, also known as the Cave Church, one of the largest churches in the Middle East, and which is literally carved right into the cave.
Day 13: Fly home
The time has come to head to the airport in Cairo for your flight home. But this isn’t goodbye—it’s see you later. The only question is: where to next?

When traveling to Egypt it's important to prepare for a long travel day. Flying from the US, it is not uncommon to have multiple legs of your journey.
Generally, expect to depart on day one in the early morning/afternoon, arriving to Egypt in the late afternoon/evening the next day. Direct flights to Egypt are incredibly limited, as such you should expect 1-3 layovers. Worried about jetlag, delayed flights, or just want more time to explore, we strongly encourage extending your stay to arrive early or stay late. This way you can settle in without the stress of missing anything.
We recommend budgeting $30-$40 per day to cover tipping, food, and shopping. You know your spending habits best, if you want to do it all budget on the higher end.
The local currency will be the Egyptian Pound. Both USD and Egyptian pounds are accepted pretty ubiquitously. If you are bringing USD, we suggest bringing small, crisp bills. We strongly advise that you take debit and credit cards (ideally with a chip), which can be used to withdraw cash at local banks as needed. Make sure to check with your bank or credit card company about withdrawal fees and/or foreign exchange fees. While better rates of exchange are usually available overseas, ordering currency from your local bank may be an option.
Your Tour Director is with you during your entire trip. They're part logistics master, making sure you get to see all that we have planned; part rockstar, sharing with your local hotspots; and part guru, sharing and inviting you into the culture. Our Tour Directors are fully trained and ready to support you in making your journey safe, seamless, and unforgettable!
In some locations you will be met by a local guide who will lead you through our traveler-inspired walking tour. You'll get some local history and culture while also making sure you hit the photo stops. You'll walk away with an insider's perspective and some great pictures.
On Plus trips, you will be in a room with one other traveler unless a single room upgrade is purchased. Roommates are assigned randomly based on gender unless a specific roommate is requested in advance. You can do this at the time of booking or in your online account up to 60 days before departure.
While it is considered safe to travel to Egypt, there are certain safety protocols that we've put in place that are different than other parts of the world. Like any destination though, it's important to stay aware of your surroundings and follow basic safety guidelines. Pickpocketing can occur, especially in crowded areas or tourist hotspots. Keep your belongings secure and be cautious with strangers offering unsolicited help or deals.
Here are a few additional points:
- Safety: Your group will be accompanied by a local guard who will ensure your group travels safely. As such, there is limited free time included on this tour.
- Health: Talking with your healthcare provider about any vaccinations or medication you may want to consider. Here are some additional tips for traveling with medication and traveling with allergies.

This is your classic sightseeing tour. Think lots of walking and taking in all the sites. On these tours, be prepared to:
- Walk a minimum of 10k steps per day (more if you add excursions)
- Use public transportation
- Climb on and off a motor coach unassisted
- Manage your own luggage (including carrying luggage upstairs if there is no elevator)
- Climb occasional stairs, hills and navigate various terrains (think cobblestones) to different sites
- Stand for periods of time during guided commentary and photo stops
Excursions are available for purchase at a discounted rate prior to departure. Some excursions may be available for purchase while you are on tour directly through your mobile app but are subject to availability and will be more expensive.
We recommend purchasing excursions at least 3 days prior to your tour departure. Please note some excursions have advance booking deadlines. Check your tour itinerary for more information to ensure you don’t miss the deadline to add them.
When you travel with Ultimate Break, you’ll make a positive impact on the places you visit and the people and animals you meet along the way. That’s because our three core Responsible Travel commitments—protecting the environment, supporting local communities, and promoting animal welfare—are at the heart of every tour we offer.
Learn more about EF's Impact approach here.
If you're itching to travel a tad longer and want to experience another destination (or even country) during your tour, consider adding your tour's extension. Some tours offer a tour extension giving you a few more days to explore with your Tour Director and other tour members.
We suggest adding the tour extension when booking your tour. If you've already made your reservation and would like to add the extension, we'll do our best to make it happen. The sooner you let us know, the better, so we can adjust your flight dates and airport gateways as needed.
