Itinerary

Day 1: Overnight flight
Board your overnight flight to Cairo, proudly referred to by the Egyptian people as Umm al-Dunya—the Mother of the World—due to its ancient history and cultural significance. Surely this nickname has nothing to do with mummies, but that’s for you to discover.
Day 2: Arrive in Cairo + travel to Giza + included dinner
Welcome to Cairo! Situated on the banks of the Nile River, Egypt's capital city is the largest in Africa and the Arab world, home to nearly 20 million people and the gateway to the Pyramids. Depending on when your flight arrives, you’ll check into your hotel in Giza and enjoy a buffet dinner at the hotel or order room service.
Please note: Getting to Egypt takes some time. Arrivals tend to be late on this day.
- Arrive at the airport and meet up with your Tour Director and fellow travelers before heading to your hotel in Giza.
- Refuel with dinner at the hotel buffet or enjoy room service to eat in bed before you pass out. Fancy.
- Rest up, the next two-plus weeks will be filled with ancient wonder, natural beauty, and a first-hand look at modern Egyptian life.
Day 3: Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx + Grand Egyptian Museum + Welcome Dinner
On your first full day in Cairo, the ancient past collides with the present. Stand in awe before the towering Pyramids of Giza, marvel at the engineering behind the Great Pyramid, and snap that photo smooching the Sphinx. Then spend the afternoon at the enormous, just-completed Grand Egyptian Museum with over 100,000 artifacts, including the full treasures of King Tutankhamun’s tomb.
In the evening, enjoy your Welcome Dinner! Hosted by your Tour Director, this kickoff dinner is all about meeting your fellow travelers, swapping stories, and easing into the rest of the trip ahead.
- Follow your expert guide, a trained Egyptologist, as you tour the grounds at the Giza Necropolis, where you’ll learn about the construction, excavation, and the pharaohs buried here. The Necropolis features the iconic Great Pyramid of Khufu, the only surviving Wonder of the Ancient World, the smaller pyramids of Khafre and Menkaure, and of course, the mysterious Sphinx.
- Go inside the Great Pyramid of Khufu (for an additional cost), accessing the interior through the newer “Robber’s Tunnel,” then descending into the Grand Gallery and King’s Chamber. But be warned, if you’re at all claustrophobic, you might want to skip this particular adventure.
- Wander the treasure-filled halls of the brand-new Grand Egyptian Museum, spanning over 5.2 million square feet—or 75 football fields, twice the size of the Smithsonian. See the complete collection of artifacts recovered from King Tut’s tomb, including his famous golden death mask, and enjoy free time to explore other galleries on your own.
Day 4: Free day in Cairo or optional excursion to Saqqara
Today’s a good day to catch up on some rest at the hotel, revisit the Grand Egyptian Museum, or test your haggling skills at the vibrant bazaars as you shop for souvenirs. Khan el-Khalili is the city’s biggest bazaar, where you can browse spices, pottery, textiles, jewelry, and more. If you’re looking for the perfect keepsake to bring back home, you can find a vendor to make you a custom cartouche necklace with your name in hieroglyphs. Still feeling like an archeologist? Join the optional excursion to must-see Saqqara.
Khan el-Khalili: Stock up on souvenirs among the winding alleys, shops, vendors, restaurants, and tea houses of this historic bazaar that dates back to the 14th century.
Koshari: Need lunch? Try koshari, Egypt’s delicious national dish, made from a carb-y mix of pasta, rice, and lentils topped with chickpeas, fried onions, and zesty tomato sauce.
Old Cairo: A peaceful escape from the bustle of Cairo, here you can visit the iconic Hanging Church, built above a Roman fortress and walk narrow, history-steeped alleyways.
Day 5: Fly to Aswan + Nubian village visit and dinner
Today you’ll head south to Aswan, a small city set on what’s considered the most beautiful stretch of the Nile River. Framed by golden hills, palm-lined islands, ancient temples, and vibrant souks, Aswan is a peaceful escape from the frenetic pace of Cairo. In the evening, you’ll visit a Nubian village, home to an indigenous group with roots in southern Egypt and northern Sudan with their own language, traditions, music, and architecture.
- Transfer to the airport in Cairo and board your morning flight to Aswan.
- Get settled at your hotel before heading to a nearby Nubian village. Here, you’ll explore the brightly painted architecture, meet and mingle with locals wearing flowing galabeyas, and taste local foods like tajin, a slow-cooked stew, or kisra, a griddled flatbread used to scoop up food in place of utensils.
Day 6: Guided tour of Aswan + sunset felucca sailboat cruise
Your Aswan immersion continues this morning with a guided tour, introducing you to both the ancient and modern sides of the city. Your first stop will be the iconic Philae Temple, one of Egypt’s most beautiful and well-preserved ancient sites, dedicated to the goddess Isis. From there, you’ll head to a local market to shop a blend of classic Egyptian and Nubian goods—look for handwoven, lightweight fabrics (perfect for, say, a sailboat cruise) designed with Nubian patterns.
- Take a short boat ride to the Philae Temple, situated on Agilkia Island, smack dab in the middle of the Nile River. Dating back to the 7th century BC, Philae Temple was relocated from a different island in the 1960s to save it from flooding. The temple complex is a blend of Greek, Roman, and Egyptian architecture, indicative of its location in southern Egypt.
- Head back to the mainland with your expert guide for a walking tour through an Aswan souk—aisle after colorful aisle of spices, like cumin, saffron, and hibiscus, browse patterned, Nubian ceramics, and shop for locally-made papyrus art.
- Stop at a perfume oil shop to learn about the use of frankincense—part perfume, part spiritual cleanser—in local culture for everything from a daily, post-bath ritual to blessing newborns and aiding with stress.
- In the evening, head to the Nile for a sunset cruise on a motorless (shoutout Mother Nature) felucca sailboat. Feluccas are traditional wooden sailboats with large triangular sails that have been used for centuries to travel along the Nile.
Day 7: Nile River cruise: Board your ship and disembark
After a morning spent packing up your room, having some breakfast, and doing any last-minute exploring of Aswan, you’ll board your cruise ship for a 3-day, 3-night adventure along the Nile River. The Nile is not only the longest river in Africa, but also the longest in the world—flowing 4,130 miles from its source in East Africa to the Mediterranean Sea.
- Board your cruise ship and get to know your home for the next few nights. You’ll cruise for a full day (of course meals are provided on board!) before reaching your next port of call, Kom Ombo.
- Spend your day looking out at the banks of the Nile while getting to know your group a bit more. The Nile is critical to Egypt’s history, widely considered sacred (which is why so many temples are built on its banks), and today about 95% of Egypt’s population lives near the river. Don’t be surprised if you see children playing, swimming, and waving to your ship from the shore.
Day 8: Nile River cruise: Kom Ombo
Your second day on the Nile takes you to Kom Ombo, a small village known for a temple situated directly on the banks of the river. The temple is unique in ancient Egyptian architecture due to its symmetrical design, featuring two identical halves dedicated to two different gods—Sobek, the crocodile-headed god of fertility, and Horus the Elder, the falcon-headed god of protection. Walk the grounds of the temple with a local guide before a stop at the—plot twist!—Crocodile Museum.
- Compare and contrast the two sides of the Kom Ombo Temple as you walk through identical courtyards, hallways, and sanctuaries honoring the two gods equally.
- Learn about Kom Ombo’s carvings that signify ancient Egyptian medicine, some featuring depictions that resemble ancient surgical tools.
- Visit the Crocodile Museum, which displays dozens of real mummified crocodiles once worshipped as sacred animals of Sobek.
- Spend the evening floating down the Nile under the stars on the deck of your cruise ship.
Day 9: Nile River cruise: Luxor
Your last day on the water brings you to Luxor, a place many call “the world’s greatest open-air museum,” and for good reason. For centuries, Luxor was the spiritual center of Egypt, the center of royal power, and a city dedicated to Amun-Ra, the king of the gods. You’ve definitely heard of (and seen in Giza) Tutankhamen, aka King Tut—he lived here, and his tomb was discovered across the river in the Valley of the Kings.
- Pop on your best walking shoes for a tour of the east bank of Luxor with a local expert. Start at the sprawling Karnak Temple complex, one of the largest religious structures ever built. Constructed over nearly 2,000 years, the heart of the complex is the Great Temple of Amun-Ra, featuring 134 towering columns, giant obelisks, sacred lakes, and hidden chapels.
- Visit a papyrus shop to learn about traditional Egyptian paper made from the papyrus plant. For thousands of years, ancient Egyptians used papyrus paper to record everything from myths to medicinal recipes to burial rituals—and to communicate.
- Arrive at Luxor Temple for an evening walking tour. Luxor is different from many other ancient temples because it is not a tomb, but rather a site used to celebrate life. Built around 1400 BCE, Luxor is one of the best-preserved temples in Egypt and features a towering gateway with massive statues of a seated pharaoh. Luxor is best at night, because it is beautifully (dare we say dramatically) lit by spotlights.
Day 10: Tour Dendera + travel to Hurghada
The cruise portion of your trip is over, so thank your captain and crew and get ready to head to Hurghada, with a stop in Dendera. Dendera is off-the-beaten-path, lush, peaceful, and packed with color. It’s one of the few places where you can still see ancient paint on temple walls and truly imagine what they looked like thousands of years ago.
- Visit the Dendera Temple complex with your Tour Director as your guide. Here you’ll walk the Temple of Hathor, built to honor the goddess of love, music, beauty, and joy—not a bad resume, tbh.
- View the stunning vivid blue and gold astronomical scenes painted on the ceiling of Hathor. The massive columns and hidden staircases make this temple one of Egypt’s best photo stops.
- Debate over the “Dendera light bulb relief,” carvings of what appear to be bulb-shaped objects connected to a cable or stem and held up by figures, with one holding what looks like a power source. Ancient electricity? You be the judge.
- Continue on to Hurghada, where you’ll stay at an all-inclusive property with meals, drinks, and snacks offered throughout the day.
Day 11: Free time in Hurghada or optional trip to Mahmya Beach
Welcome to Hurghada, or as some call it—paradise. Once a quaint fishing village on the Red Sea, Hurghada is now one of Egypt’s most desirable beach destinations. If you haven’t heard of Hurghada before, please Google Image search it right now, we’ll wait. Incredible, right? We’re talking crystal-clear water, white-sand beaches, epic coral reefs, and snorkeling that rivals anywhere on Earth. Needless to say—today is beach, beach is today. Spend the day at your hotel’s very own beach, or opt into an excursion to the stunning Mahmya Beach for a different vibe.
El Dahar: Wander Hurghada’s old town, exploring your way through traditional markets, shisha cafés (translation: hookah lounges), and soaking in the laid-back local vibe.
Sakkala nightlife: Visit the modern center of Hurghada and a great spot to spend an evening bouncing from rooftop bars to beach clubs to pubs.
Day 12: Free day in Hurghada
Your second full day in Hurghada is all yours, and the perfect day for some well-earned rest and relaxation. Your waterfront hotel is located on the coast, overlooking the Red Sea, and features a private beach with lounge chairs and umbrellas, three outdoor pools, and a wellness center (and remember, all food and drink are included).
Old Vic Beach or Dream Beach: There are plenty of public or low-cost beach clubs in Hurghada, including Old Vic and Dream, where you can chill, swim, and soak up the sun without needing a hotel wristband.
Day 13: Travel to Cairo
It’s a long-ish haul from the quiet coast of the Red Sea to the bustling city on the Nile, so be sure to use the journey to reframe your mindset. You’re traveling from a tourist community of about 200,000 to a major metropolis of over 20 million—things are about to speed up.
- Hit the wellness center or pool and enjoy one last all-inclusive breakfast before boarding your private charter bus and heading back to Cairo.
- Get settled at your hotel and enjoy a free evening in “The City of All Cities.”
Day 14: Free day in Cairo or optional day trip safari to Wadi al-Hitan
Sleep in, sip a strong Egyptian coffee, and explore Cairo at your own pace—today is all yours. Take a walk along the Nile Corniche to get up close and personal with life along the river. The Corniche is home to many upscale hotels, restaurants, and roof bars with views of the river. Looking for some more once-in-a-lifetime? Try the optional Wadi al-Hitan safari day trip—a surreal and prehistoric adventure out in the desert.
Day 15: Travel to Alexandria + sightseeing
Today you’ll head to Egypt’s northernmost city, and the largest city on the Mediterranean Sea, Alexandria. Once the crown jewel of the Mediterranean, Alexandria is Egypt’s second-largest city and a vibrant blend of ancient history and beachy, more modern vibes. Founded by Alexander the Great in 331 BCE, it was once the center of learning, science, and culture for the entire ancient world. On the way, you’ll make a pitstop at Wadi El Natron, a quiet desert valley with quite the legacy.
- Board a charter bus bound for Wadi El Natron. Known for its salt lakes, the area was once a key source of natron, a type of salt used in mummification, nbd. The wadi was also the center of early Christianity in Egypt and home to 60+ monasteries, including Anba Bishoy Monastery, which you’ll visit. Explore the gardens and observe the resident monks as they go about their daily lives, then visit the church for expansive desert views.
- Arrive in Alexandria and settle into your hotel before a tour of Alexandria led by your Tour Director. You’ll visit the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, one of the Seven Wonders of the Middle Ages that dates back to the 7th century BCE. The catacombs are a beautiful (and a bit spooky) underground burial site and surreal labyrinth that features carved tombs, statues, and a spiral staircase, all hidden beneath the city.
- See Alexandria’s more modern, Mediterranean side on a walk down the Corniche, Alexandria’s long seaside promenade. Lined by shops and cafés, the Corniche features stunning views of the sea. Then, head to the city center, a seemingly vintage-European downtown humming with markets, bookstores, and street vendors.
Day 16: Free day or optional tour of Alexandria
Alexandria moves at a slower pace than Cairo, is more Mediterranean than Middle Eastern, and has a sort of faded grandeur. Think Havana meets Athens meets Cairo. Today, the city (or the Mediterranean) is yours to explore. Or, if you want to explore the city with a local guide, opt in to a full-day tour.
Bibliotheca Alexandrina: Visit the modern tribute to the ancient Library of Alexandria, which sought to collect all the world’s knowledge. A cultural and architectural icon, the library contains millions of books, museums, art galleries, and a planetarium.
Day 17: Travel back to Cairo
Your trip through Egypt is coming to an end, and today you’ll board a charter bus heading southeast from Alexandria and the Mediterranean back to Cairo. Settle into your hotel (one more sleep in Egypt!) before hitting the souks for any last-minute souvenir shopping. Remember to get some rest today; you have a long journey home tomorrow.
In the evening, it’s time for your Farewell Dinner with your group and Tour Director at a traditional local restaurant. This dinner is your chance to relive the best stories, the funniest inside jokes, and all the unforgettable moments you’ve shared with new friends. Raise a glass, maybe shed a few tears, and start planning your next adventure.
Day 18: Fly home
Wadaeaan ya aisdiqa'!
Translation: Goodbye, friends! Your next destination awaits—home. But this isn’t goodbye. It’s “See you later.” The only question is, where?

When traveling to Egypt it's important to prepare for a long travel day. Flying from the US, it is not uncommon to have multiple legs of your journey.
Generally, expect to depart on day one in the early morning/afternoon, arriving to Egypt in the late afternoon/evening the next day. Direct flights to Egypt are incredibly limited, as such you should expect 1-3 layovers. Worried about jetlag, delayed flights, or just want more time to explore, we strongly encourage extending your stay to arrive early or stay late. This way you can settle in without the stress of missing anything.
We recommend budgeting $30-$40 per day to cover tipping, food, and shopping. You know your spending habits best, if you want to do it all budget on the higher end.
The local currency will be the Egyptian Pound. Both USD and Egyptian pounds are accepted pretty ubiquitously. If you are bringing USD, we suggest bringing small, crisp bills. We strongly advise that you take debit and credit cards (ideally with a chip), which can be used to withdraw cash at local banks as needed. Make sure to check with your bank or credit card company about withdrawal fees and/or foreign exchange fees. While better rates of exchange are usually available overseas, ordering currency from your local bank may be an option.
Your Tour Director is with you during your entire trip. They're part logistics master, making sure you get to see all that we have planned; part rockstar, sharing with your local hotspots; and part guru, sharing and inviting you into the culture. Our Tour Directors are fully trained and ready to support you in making your journey safe, seamless, and unforgettable!
In some locations you will be met by a local guide who will lead you through our traveler-inspired walking tour. You'll get some local history and culture while also making sure you hit the photo stops. You'll walk away with an insider's perspective and some great pictures.
On Plus trips, you will be in a room with one other traveler unless a single room upgrade is purchased. Roommates are assigned randomly based on gender unless a specific roommate is requested in advance. You can do this at the time of booking or in your online account up to 60 days before departure.
While it is considered safe to travel to Egypt, there are certain safety protocols that we've put in place that are different than other parts of the world. Like any destination though, it's important to stay aware of your surroundings and follow basic safety guidelines. Pickpocketing can occur, especially in crowded areas or tourist hotspots. Keep your belongings secure and be cautious with strangers offering unsolicited help or deals.
Here are a few additional points:
- Safety: Your group will be accompanied by a local guard who will ensure your group travels safely. As such, there is limited free time included on this tour.
- Health: Talking with your healthcare provider about any vaccinations or medication you may want to consider. Here are some additional tips for traveling with medication and traveling with allergies.

This is your classic sightseeing tour. Think lots of walking and taking in all the sites. On these tours, be prepared to:
- Walk a minimum of 10k steps per day (more if you add excursions)
- Use public transportation
- Climb on and off a motor coach unassisted
- Manage your own luggage (including carrying luggage upstairs if there is no elevator)
- Climb occasional stairs, hills and navigate various terrains (think cobblestones) to different sites
- Stand for periods of time during guided commentary and photo stops
For Essential Tours: Be able to climb a ladder for bunk beds (if applicable)
Excursions are available for purchase at a discounted rate prior to departure. Some excursions may be available for purchase while you are on tour directly through your mobile app but are subject to availability and will be more expensive.
We recommend purchasing excursions at least 3 days prior to your tour departure. Please note some excursions have advance booking deadlines. Check your tour itinerary for more information to ensure you don’t miss the deadline to add them.

If you're itching to travel a tad longer and want to experience another destination (or even country) during your tour, consider adding your tour's extension. Some tours offer a tour extension giving you a few more days to explore with your Tour Director and other tour members.
We suggest adding the tour extension when booking your tour. If you've already made your reservation and would like to add the extension, we'll do our best to make it happen. The sooner you let us know, the better, so we can adjust your flight dates and airport gateways as needed.
