Vienna is a year-round destination, but the best times to visit depend on what you're after. Spring (April to May) and early autumn (September to October) offer the most pleasant weather for exploring the city on foot, with mild temperatures and fewer crowds than the peak summer months. Summer (June to August) is warm and lively, with outdoor concerts, open-air cinema, and the city's parks and gardens at their best — but also the most crowded and expensive period. Winter (December to February) has a magical atmosphere: Vienna's Christmas markets are among the finest in Europe, the opera and concert season is in full swing, and the city's coffee houses feel particularly welcoming in the cold. The Vienna Philharmonic's New Year's Concert and the Vienna Opera Ball are two of the most prestigious cultural events in the world, both held in winter.

Austria is a moderately expensive destination — more affordable than Switzerland but pricier than Eastern Europe. Vienna is the most expensive city in the country, with accommodation and dining costs comparable to other major Western European capitals. That said, Vienna has some extraordinary value: many of the city's best museums offer free entry on specific days, the Naschmarkt is an excellent and affordable place to eat, and the city's coffee house culture means you can sit for hours over a single Melange without feeling rushed. Salzburg is slightly cheaper than Vienna. The Alpine regions are expensive in peak ski season (December to March) but more affordable in summer. The Austrian rail network is excellent and reasonably priced when booked in advance. Overall, Austria is very manageable on a mid-range travel budget.

Vienna and Salzburg are both essential Austria, but they offer very different experiences. Vienna is the imperial capital — vast, grand, and culturally overwhelming in the best possible way, with the Kunsthistorisches Museum, the Belvedere, the Vienna State Opera, and the Schönbrunn Palace all within the city. It's a city that rewards multiple days of exploration and has a contemporary food and arts scene that goes well beyond its classical reputation. Salzburg is smaller, more intimate, and set against one of the most beautiful backdrops in Europe — the Hohensalzburg Fortress above the old town, the Alps visible in every direction, and the Salzach River running through the center. It's Mozart's birthplace, the setting for The Sound of Music, and a UNESCO World Heritage city with a baroque old town that's genuinely extraordinary. Most travelers visit both — Vienna for cultural depth, Salzburg for beauty and atmosphere.

Austria is one of the easier European countries to navigate as a first-timer, but a few things are worth knowing. Vienna's public transport system — U-Bahn, trams, and buses — is excellent and covers the city comprehensively; a 24-hour or 48-hour transit pass is good value if you're moving around the city. Tipping is appreciated but not as mandatory as in the US — rounding up or leaving 10% at restaurants is standard. Many of Vienna's top museums require advance booking in peak season — the Kunsthistorisches Museum, the Belvedere (for Klimt's The Kiss), and the Spanish Riding School all benefit from pre-booking. Coffee house culture is a UNESCO-recognized tradition in Vienna — sitting at a marble table with a newspaper and a Melange for an hour is not just acceptable, it's encouraged. Finally, Austria's Alpine regions require appropriate footwear and clothing for hiking — conditions can change rapidly even in summer.

A week is enough for a solid first trip to Austria — four or five days in Vienna and two or three days in Salzburg, connected by a comfortable two-and-a-half-hour train journey. Ten days lets you add the Salzkammergut lake district (including Hallstatt, one of the most photographed villages in Europe) and possibly Innsbruck in the Tyrol. Two weeks opens up the Alpine regions more fully — Zell am See, the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, and the Hohe Tauern National Park are all extraordinary. Austria is also an excellent base for day trips into neighboring countries — Bratislava is 45 minutes from Vienna by train, and Munich is under two hours from Salzburg.
