• Hi (casual): Servus (SAIR-voos)—the laid-back Austrian hello used between friends. Also doubles as goodbye. Incredibly versatile, very charming.
• Goodbye: Auf Wiedersehen (owf VEE-der-zay-en)—the formal farewell. Tschüss (CHOOS) works for casual goodbyes too.
• Thank you: Danke (DAHN-keh)—short, easy, and used constantly. Danke schön (DAHN-keh shurn) adds a little extra warmth.
• Please/you're welcome: Bitte (BIT-teh)—another legendary double-duty word. Please, you're welcome, here you go—bitte does it all.
• Cheers! Prost (prohst)—the universal German-language toast and music to any Austrian's ears. Eye contact is essential. Always.
• Delicious: Köstlich (KURST-likh)—because Austrian food absolutely deserves this word, and you will be saying it constantly.
• A coffee please: Einen Kaffee bitte (EYE-nen KAH-feh BIT-teh)—possibly the most important phrase in Vienna, where coffee house culture is practically a religion and ordering correctly is an art form.
• One more beer please: Noch ein Bier bitte (nokh eyn beer BIT-teh)—equally essential, especially in Innsbruck and Salzburg where the après-ski energy is very real.
• Where is...? Wo ist...? (vo ist)—pair with a confident point and you're basically navigating like a local.
