Croatia's peak season runs from July to August, when the Dalmatian coast is at its most beautiful — warm, sunny, and buzzing with energy — but also at its most crowded and expensive. Dubrovnik in particular becomes extremely busy in peak summer, with cruise ship passengers adding to the volume. The shoulder months of May, June, and September are widely considered the best time to visit: the weather is warm enough for swimming, the crowds are significantly thinner, and accommodation prices are lower. May and June are particularly good for Plitvice Lakes, when the waterfalls are at their most powerful after spring rains. October is the last month for reliable swimming weather and has a beautiful, quieter atmosphere. Winter is mild on the coast but many island facilities close, and the ferry schedule reduces significantly.

Dubrovnik and Split are both essential Croatia, but they have very different characters. Dubrovnik is the more dramatic of the two — a perfectly preserved medieval walled city perched above the Adriatic, with a compact old town that's genuinely extraordinary to walk through. It's also the more tourist-heavy, particularly in peak summer when the narrow streets can feel overwhelmed. Split is larger, more lived-in, and in many ways more interesting as a place to spend time: Diocletian's Palace, a 4th-century Roman emperor's retirement complex, forms the entire old town, and people actually live, work, and go out within its ancient walls. Split also has a better nightlife scene and is a more practical base for island hopping, with ferries to Hvar, Brač, and Vis departing regularly. Most travelers visit both — Dubrovnik for the drama, Split for the atmosphere.

Croatia has become significantly more expensive over the past decade, particularly since it adopted the euro in 2023, and it's no longer the budget destination it once was. Dubrovnik is the most expensive city in the country — accommodation, restaurants, and activities all carry a premium that reflects its status as one of Europe's most visited destinations. Split and the islands are somewhat more affordable, and the interior of the country (Zagreb, the Plitvice Lakes area) is cheaper still. Eating at konobas — traditional Croatian restaurants — rather than tourist-facing establishments near the main sights saves money and usually produces a better meal. Island hopping adds up quickly when you factor in ferry costs and accommodation on multiple islands. Overall, Croatia is now a mid-to-high range European destination, comparable to Portugal or the Czech Republic rather than the budget bargain it was a decade ago.

Getting around Croatia requires a combination of approaches depending on where you're going. The coastal highway (Magistrala) connects the main Dalmatian cities by road, and renting a car gives you the most flexibility for exploring the coast and reaching places that ferries don't serve. Buses are the main form of intercity public transport and connect most coastal cities reliably, though journey times can be long. Ferries are essential for island hopping — Jadrolinija is the main operator, and booking in advance is strongly recommended in peak season, particularly for car ferries. Dubrovnik is at the southern end of the coast and requires either a flight, a long bus journey, or a ferry from Split to reach — factor this into your planning. Zagreb, the capital, is in the interior and is best reached by train or bus from the coast.

Croatia has a few things worth knowing before you arrive. The country adopted the euro in January 2023, which simplifies things for travelers from the eurozone but means prices have adjusted upward in some areas. Dubrovnik's old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the city has introduced visitor management measures including limits on cruise ship passengers and restrictions on wheeled luggage in the old town — check current rules before you arrive. The Adriatic is extraordinarily clear but the coastline is mostly rocky rather than sandy, so water shoes are genuinely useful for getting in and out of the sea. Ferry schedules in the shoulder and off seasons are significantly reduced compared to peak summer — check timetables carefully if you're visiting outside of July and August. Finally, Plitvice Lakes National Park requires advance ticket booking in peak season and has timed entry slots — don't leave this to the last minute.
