Paris is one of the most visited cities in the world, and it earns that status — but it's also a city that rewards visitors who go beyond the obvious. The Louvre, the Eiffel Tower, and Notre-Dame are genuinely extraordinary, but the Paris that most travelers remember is the one found in the neighborhoods: a morning coffee at a zinc bar in the 11th arrondissement, an afternoon in the Marais browsing galleries and falafel shops, an evening on the Canal Saint-Martin watching the city slow down. Paris is also a city that can feel overwhelming and expensive on a first visit, particularly if you're staying in the tourist-heavy areas near the main sights. Staying in a neighborhood like Belleville, Oberkampf, or the 13th gives you a much more local and affordable experience. The city's metro is excellent and makes every corner of Paris accessible.

France is large enough that no single trip can cover it comprehensively, and the key is choosing a focus rather than trying to see everything. A week in Paris is genuinely not too much — the city has enough museums, neighborhoods, day trips (Versailles, Giverny, Champagne), and restaurants to fill two weeks without repetition. Ten days to two weeks lets you combine Paris with one or two regions: Provence and the French Riviera, Normandy and Brittany, the Loire Valley, or Bordeaux and the wine country. Three weeks opens up the south — the Dordogne, the Pyrenees, Languedoc — or a proper road trip through multiple regions. The TGV high-speed rail network makes getting between Paris and most major cities fast and comfortable — Paris to Lyon takes two hours, Paris to Marseille takes three.

France has a few things worth knowing before you arrive. The French appreciate effort with the language — starting any interaction with 'Bonjour' and attempting a few words of French, even badly, is met with significantly more warmth than launching straight into English. Tipping is not as expected as in the US — a service charge is typically included in restaurant bills, and leaving a few euros extra is appreciated but not obligatory. Many smaller shops, markets, and some restaurants are cash only, so carrying euros is useful. French meal times are taken seriously — lunch is typically from noon to 2pm and dinner from 7:30 to 10pm, and showing up outside these windows at smaller restaurants may mean you can't be served. The Paris metro is excellent but can be crowded and confusing at first — downloading the RATP app before you arrive makes navigation much easier.

France has a reputation for being expensive, and Paris in particular can be — accommodation in the city center, restaurant dining, and museum entry fees add up quickly. But France is also a country where you can eat extraordinarily well for very little if you know where to look: a baguette and cheese from a market, a crêpe from a street stall, a prix-fixe lunch menu at a neighborhood bistro. Many of France's greatest pleasures are free or very affordable — walking the streets of Paris, exploring the countryside, visiting village markets, and sitting at a café terrace with a coffee. Outside Paris, France is noticeably more affordable, particularly in rural areas and smaller cities. The TGV trains are reasonably priced when booked in advance. Overall, France rewards travelers who engage with local food culture rather than eating at tourist-facing restaurants near the main sights.

France's regions are so distinct that the right answer depends entirely on what you're after. Provence — lavender fields, hilltop villages, Roman ruins, and the markets of Aix-en-Provence — is one of the most beautiful and sensory-rich regions in Europe, best visited in June and July when the lavender is in bloom. The French Riviera (Nice, Cannes, Antibes, Monaco) offers Mediterranean glamour and some of the best light in Europe. Normandy has the D-Day beaches, Mont-Saint-Michel, and a food culture built around cream, butter, and calvados. The Loire Valley is the château region — a UNESCO World Heritage landscape of Renaissance palaces and vineyards. Bordeaux and Burgundy are the great wine regions. Brittany has a wild Atlantic coastline and a Celtic culture distinct from the rest of France. Each region rewards at least a week of exploration.

France's TGV high-speed rail network is one of the best in Europe and the most efficient way to travel between major cities — Paris to Lyon takes two hours, Paris to Marseille takes three, and Paris to Bordeaux takes just over two hours. Booking in advance through SNCF or Trainline gets you significantly cheaper fares. Within Paris, the metro is excellent and covers the city comprehensively. For exploring rural regions — Provence, the Dordogne, Normandy, Brittany — a rental car is the most practical option, as public transport to smaller villages and countryside attractions is limited. The French road network is excellent, and driving through the countryside is one of the great pleasures of a France trip. Intercity buses (FlixBus, BlaBlaBus) are a cheaper alternative to trains for some routes, though they take longer.
