Arabic is the official language of Egypt, and Cairenes speak Egyptian Arabic—a dialect so widely understood across the Arab world that it’s practically the universal version. English is spoken in most tourist areas, but a few words of Arabic will get you a long way and a lot of smiles. 

• Hello: Ahlan (AH-lan): Warm, casual, and universally used. The full version is Ahlan wa sahlan (AH-lan wa SAH-lan), but ahlan works perfectly fine. 

• Goodbye: Ma’a salama (MAH-ah sah-LAH-mah): Literally “go in peace.” A lovely send-off. 

• Yes: Aywa (EYE-wah) 

• No: La’ (lah, with a slight glottal stop) 

• Please: Min fadlak (min FAD-lak) to a man, min fadlik (min FAD-lik) to a woman. Either way, it lands well. 

• Thank you: Shukran (SHOOK-ran). The response you’ll get is Afwan (AHF-wan)—you’re welcome. 

• How much is this? Bikam da? (bi-KAM dah): The most important shopping phrase in Khan el-Khalili. Use it confidently. 

• No, thank you: La’, shukran (LAH SHOOK-ran): Polite but firm. Essential for navigating Cairo’s enthusiastic vendors. 

• Is it possible...? Mumkin...? (MOOM-kin): A versatile opener for any request. Egyptians love a polite ask. 

• The bill, please: El hisab, min fadlak (el hi-SAB min FAD-lak): Useful in any café or restaurant. 

• Good!/great! Quayyis! (KWY-yis): A general expression of approval. You’ll hear it constantly. 

• Congratulations! Mabrook! (mah-BROOK)—also just an expression of delight at something good. A word worth knowing.

Cairo is one of the most densely populated cities on earth, and it operates at a frequency entirely its own. 

• The city never really sleeps: Cafés are open past midnight. Markets run late. Traffic at 2 am is still traffic. 

• Hospitality is non-negotiable: Egyptians are extraordinarily welcoming. You’ll be offered tea in shops, invited to sit, and asked about your family within minutes of meeting someone. This is genuine, not a sales tactic. 

• Bargaining is part of the culture: In markets and bazaars, the first price is a starting point. Negotiate with warmth and humor and everyone has a good time. 

• The call to prayer is constant: Five times a day, the adhan echoes across the rooftops from hundreds of mosques simultaneously. It’s one of the most extraordinary sounds you’ll ever hear. 

• Tea is social currency: Karak chai and mint tea are offered everywhere, at all times, for any reason. Say yes. 

• Cairo traffic is a phenomenon: The city’s roads operate by a logic entirely their own. Embrace it. Your Tour Director has seen it all before.

Egyptian food is hearty, ancient, deeply flavorful, and almost entirely affordable. This is one of the great underrated food cultures in the world. 

• Koshary: Cairo’s unofficial national dish. Rice, lentils, macaroni, chickpeas, crispy onions, tomato sauce, and a splash of vinegar and chilli. It sounds impossible. It’s incredible. 

• Ta’ameya: Egypt’s version of falafel, made with fava beans instead of chickpeas. Crispier, earthier, and better than any version you’ve had before. 

• Ful medames: Slow-cooked fava beans with olive oil, lemon, and spices. The Egyptian breakfast of champions. 

• Feteer meshaltet: A flaky, layered pastry eaten sweet or savory, stuffed with cheese, honey, or meat. Cairo’s answer to everything. 

• Hamam mahshi: Stuffed pigeon, slow-roasted, served as a celebratory dish across the city. Order it once and understand why Egyptians are proud of it. 

• Aish baladi: Egypt’s flatbread, baked in wood-fired ovens and eaten with everything. Warm, chewy, and essential. 

• Umm Ali: Egypt’s beloved bread pudding, baked with cream, nuts, and coconut. The dessert equivalent of a warm hug.

Sure, the pyramids are a huge draw, but there’s a lot more to do in Cairo.   

• See the pyramids at sunrise: Get there before the tour buses. The light is golden, the desert is quiet, and the scale of what you’re looking at will genuinely floor you. 

• Visit the Egyptian Museum: Go straight to the Tutankhamun collection. Everything else is a bonus—but what a bonus. 

• Explore Khan el-Khalili: Give yourself at least half a day. Get lost. Drink tea in a side-street café. Negotiate for something you didn’t know you needed. 

• Walk through Islamic Cairo: The Ibn Tulun Mosque, the Citadel, the Al-Azhar Mosque—each one is extraordinary on its own. 

• Take a felucca on the Nile at sunset: A traditional wooden sailboat, the river, the city’s skyline turning amber. No agenda. Just the water and the light. 

• Eat koshary at a street stall: Find the busiest local spot, point at the menu, and commit. This is the Cairo experience distilled into one bowl. 

• Visit Coptic Cairo: The Hanging Church, the Ben Ezra Synagogue, and the Church of St. Sergius and Bacchus—layers of history that predate almost everything else in the city.

Cairo is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities on earth, and its culture reflects every civilization that’s ever passed through it: 

• Ancient Egypt is everywhere—but so is everything else: The pharaohs are the headline, but Islamic Cairo, Coptic Cairo, Ottoman Cairo, and modern Cairo all exist side by side. 

• Religion shapes daily life: Islam is woven into the rhythm of the city—the call to prayer, Ramadan, the warmth extended to strangers. Visitors are welcomed with genuine openness. 

• Art and culture run deep: Cairo has one of the Arab world’s most vibrant film, music, and literary scenes—and produced Naguib Mahfouz, the only Arab writer to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. 

• Family is central: Cairenes are deeply family-oriented. You’ll see multigenerational groups everywhere—at restaurants, in parks, on the Corniche on a Friday evening. 

• Humor is a love language: Egyptians are famously funny. Self-deprecating, sharp, and warm. If you can make someone laugh, you’re in. 

• The pace is chaotic but the spirit is generous: Cairo can feel overwhelming. It’s also one of the most human cities on earth. Give it a day and you’ll feel it.

Cairo’s desert climate means sunshine almost year-round—but the temperature range is significant: 

• October–April: The best time to visit. Temperatures are comfortable (60–75°F), the sky is clear, and the major sites are a pleasure to explore. 

• November–February: The coolest months. Occasionally cold at night, especially in the desert. Layer up for early morning pyramid visits. 

• March–May: Spring brings warmer days and the occasional khamsin—a hot, dusty desert wind. Still very visitable, with fewer crowds. 

• June–September: Often above 100°F. Serious sightseeing needs to happen before 10 am or after 5 pm. Crowds thin out and prices drop considerably.
