The right starting point in Europe depends on what you're after, but a few cities work particularly well for first-timers. London is the most English-friendly entry point and has extraordinary museums, culture, and a transport network that makes day trips easy. Paris is the most iconic European city and rewards even a short visit. Rome combines ancient history with extraordinary food in a way that's hard to beat for a first European experience. Barcelona offers architecture, beach, and food in a compact, walkable city. Amsterdam is compact, cycling-friendly, and has world-class museums. For travelers who want to cover multiple countries efficiently, a rail pass and a multi-city itinerary — London, Paris, Amsterdam, and Berlin, for example — is a classic and very satisfying approach. The key is to choose a region and go deep rather than trying to cover the whole continent in a single trip.

Europe has one of the best rail networks in the world, and the train is the most enjoyable and often the most practical way to travel between cities. High-speed trains connect most major European cities efficiently — Paris to London takes two and a half hours on the Eurostar, Paris to Amsterdam takes under two hours, and London to Edinburgh takes about four and a half hours. Booking in advance through national rail operators or Trainline gets you significantly cheaper fares. Budget airlines (Ryanair, easyJet, Wizz Air) are a cheaper option for longer distances — London to Lisbon or Amsterdam to Athens — though the total journey time including airport transfers often makes trains competitive for shorter routes. Within cities, public transport is generally excellent across Europe. Renting a car makes sense for rural areas and road trips but is unnecessary and often impractical in city centers.

Visa requirements for Europe depend on your nationality and which countries you're visiting. The Schengen Area — which covers most of the EU plus Norway, Iceland, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein — allows citizens of many countries (including the US, Canada, Australia, and most other Western nations) to visit visa-free for stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period. From 2025, the EU is introducing the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) for visa-exempt travelers — similar to the US ESTA — which will require a pre-travel online authorization. The UK, Ireland, and some Balkan countries are not part of Schengen and have their own entry requirements. Citizens of countries not on the visa-exempt list need to apply for a Schengen visa in advance. Always check the current requirements for your specific nationality before you travel.

Europe is compact enough that a week gives you a meaningful experience of one or two cities, but the continent rewards longer trips. Two weeks is enough for a focused regional trip — a Scandinavia circuit, a Mediterranean coast journey, or a Central Europe rail trip through Prague, Vienna, and Budapest. Three weeks lets you combine two or three regions meaningfully. A month opens up the possibility of a proper multi-country journey — the classic Interrail route from London through Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin, Prague, Vienna, and Rome is one of the great travel experiences in the world. The most common mistake is trying to cover too many countries in too little time — spending two nights in each city means you never really experience any of them. Choosing fewer destinations and going deeper produces a much more satisfying trip.

Europe's cost varies enormously by country and region. Scandinavia (Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland) is among the most expensive travel regions in the world. Western Europe (France, Germany, the Netherlands, the UK) is moderately expensive. Southern Europe (Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece) is more affordable, particularly outside of peak season and tourist-heavy areas. Eastern Europe (Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria) is significantly cheaper than the west and offers extraordinary value. The most effective ways to manage costs across Europe are: booking accommodation and transport in advance, eating at local restaurants rather than tourist-facing ones near the main sights, using public transport rather than taxis, and visiting shoulder season (April to May or September to October) rather than peak summer. A Eurail pass can be good value for travelers covering multiple countries by train.

Europe's best travel season depends on what you're after and where you're going. Summer (June to August) is the most popular time to visit — long days, warm weather, and a full calendar of outdoor events and festivals. But it's also the most crowded and expensive period, particularly in the most popular destinations. The shoulder months of April to May and September to October are widely considered the best time to visit most of Europe: pleasant weather, fewer crowds, lower prices, and the cities at their most atmospheric. Winter (November to March) is cold and grey in much of Northern and Central Europe, but has its own appeal: Christmas markets in Germany and Austria, skiing in the Alps, and a quieter, more local atmosphere in the cities. The Mediterranean coast (Spain, Italy, Greece, Croatia) is best from May to October for beach weather.
