The official language of Hungary is Hungarian (Magyar)—one of the most unique and famously tricky languages in Europe. Don’t let that intimidate you though. Locals absolutely light up when visitors make the effort, even if the pronunciation is a little rough around the edges. English is widely spoken in Budapest, especially among younger people, so you’ll be totally fine getting around. But throw in a few of these and you’ll instantly win over the room:

• Hello: Szia (SEE-ya)—casual and used constantly, think of it as your all-purpose greeting.
• Good day/Hello (formal): Jó napot (YO na-pot)—use this with older locals and you’ll get a smile every time.
• Goodbye: Viszlát (VIS-lat)—short for the longer goodbye, totally acceptable to use.
• Thank you: Köszönöm (KUH-suh-nuhm)—yes it’s a mouthful, yes it’s worth learning
• Please/You’re welcome: Kérem (KAY-rem)—pulls double duty, very handy.
• Cheers! Egészségedre (egg-esh-shay-ged-reh)—the legendary Hungarian toast. It’s a workout. Practice before your first ruin bar visit.
• Delicious: Finom (FEE-nom)—you will use this constantly. The food demands it.
• Where is…? Hol van…? (HOL von)—pair with pointing and you’re basically fluent.
